Pastor’s Corner
Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
Not because he tends His sheep,
leads them to green pastures
and knows them each by name;
but because He dies for
them…for us. He, Himself, tells
us this in the Gospel we hear
this Sunday; “I am the good
shepherd. A good shepherd lays
down his life for the sheep.”
As Disciples of Christ we are called to imitate Him, to follow His
example of love and service, to lay down our lives for the sheep.
In doing so, most likely we will not have to suffer persecution and
martyrdom; though we will have to die. The “laying down” of our
lives requires dying to self for the sake of the other. This can take
many forms and all followers of our Risen Savior must experience
this relinquishing of the ego, the pride, the control that plagues our
human condition.
We die when we take time to put God first. Making room in our
daily schedule for prayer or for Sunday Mass, examining our choices
in relationship to the teaching of the Catholic Church, being truly
open to the phrase “Thy will be done;” are all ways that we
demonstrate God as the top priority in our lives.
We die when we think of our sisters and brothers before we think
of ourselves. Self-giving love to a spouse, sacrificing for our children,
patience with our co-workers, respect to teachers, doing our part in
the community; these are just a few signs of the way we emulate the
humility of Christ.
Service in the Church is also an important witness of dying to self.
The Church is both an Institution and the people of God, through
which our Lord makes Himself present in our world. As members of
the Church we have a responsibility to participate in the ministry and
outreach of the faith community.
We have many opportunities for you to be involved in the great
work of the Church in our Parish. One of the most fundamental
ministries we have is the Pastoral Council. This body envisions,
enables and evaluates the direction the Holy Spirit inspires us to
follow as workers in the Lord’s vineyard.
Currently, we are accepting nominations for the Pastoral Council
elections that will take place very soon. We have 4 open seats for the
coming year. You can nominate yourself or someone who you think
God is calling to serve in this capacity. All nominees must be
parishioners over the age of 18 who are willing to gather for 90
minutes once a month for 10 months. That’s it!
All nominees will submit a short biography with a picture by May
1st (this coming Friday) to the Pastoral Council or parish office. These
will be published in the bulletin in advance of the election.
I strongly encourage you to pray about this. Our purpose is to join
in Christ’s mission of renewing the world and each of us has a role
and responsibility in this exciting, yet challenging endeavor. The
Church needs good leadership and the Pastoral Council is an
important component to the overseeing of the local faith
community. We need good shepherds for our flock!
Peace, Fr. Nick
