MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST
Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most beloved
imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the
many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the
many members making up the one Body of Christ.
Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately
sum up how Christian vocations work together.
Unlike some of Paul’s other writings, which are a
product of the social and religious conventions of his
time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the
lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what
vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise
know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and
share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ.
VIDA DEL CUERPO DE CRISTO
Algunas de las imágenes más conocidas y queridas
de san Pablo se encuentran en los pasajes de la primera carta a
los corintios que hemos escuchado la semana pasada y hoy: los
muchos dones de un mismo Espíritu y los muchos miembros
que componen el Cuerpo de Cristo. Pocos pasajes de la Sagrada Escritura resumen con mayor claridad cómo las vocaciones
cristianas trabajan en colaboración.
A diferencia de otros escritos de san Pablo, producto
de las convenciones sociales y religiosas de su época, estos
nos permiten mirar nuestra propia vida y la vida de los que están a nuestro alrededor para discernir los dones, la vocación
que el Espíritu Santo nos ha dado para el bien de todos. Así
también podemos conocer las alegrías y las penas de los otros miembros del Cuerpo y compartirlos para así fortalecer todo el Cuerpo de
Cristo.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
The connections between the First Reading and the Gospel of Luke
show Ezra, the priest, reading the Law to the Chosen and, Jesus, the
new High Priest of God, the Word itself speaking to the people. The
contrasts provide hope to us when we read that “today is holy” and a
time to “proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” In reality, we should
rejoice and recognize every single day as “holy” and “acceptable”, especially when we accept that we are unique to Christ as each one of us
has a special purpose to fulfill in the Lord’s Plan of Salvation. Saint
Paul, in the second reading, uses the metaphor and analogy of the
body to teach us that we are all important parts of the Body of Christ.
The community and the world needs each one of us to faithfully
function with each other—we are the Body of Christ, though individuals, we have a role that is equally important as are others. As the Body
of Christ, we represent the unity and diversity of his faith community.
We are called always to function as true members of his elect, ever
more so this year—a year acceptable to the Lord as we embark into
the Year of Mercy.
The world, country, state, community and parish are not untouched by
the ills and tribulations of life. We have regions of the world trying to
unsettle and destroy a way of life that does not agree with their
philosophy or way of being—the end result is self-destruction. We need
to stay strong in our faith, pray, help the less fortunate, and exercise
our rights to correct or overcome the action of those who seek to erase
the Body of Christ. The Word of Christ as noted in the Psalm “Your
words, Lord, are Spirit and life” provide an anchor of faith and hope, let
us therefore not dismay, but embrace the words of true life and accept
the hope His words provide to all.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Las conexiones entre la Primera Lectura y el Evangelio de San Lucas
muestra a Esdras, el sacerdote, leyendo el libro de la ley a los Escogidos y, Jesús, el Sumo Sacerdote de Dios, la Palabra misma hablando al
pueblo. Los contrastes nos dan esperanza cuando leemos que “hoy es
santo” y es un tiempo para “proclamar un año aceptable para Dios”. En
realidad, deberíamos regocijarnos y reconocer cada día como “santo” y
aceptable”, especialmente cuando aceptamos que somos únicos para
Cristo pues cada uno de nosotros tiene un propósito especial para cumplir el Plan de Salvación del Señor. San Pablo“, en la segunda lectura,
usa la metáfora y la analogía del cuerpo para enseñarnos que todos
somos partes importantes del Cuerpo de Cristo.
La comunidad y el mundo mismo nos necesitan a cada uno de nosotros
para que fielmente funcionemos con los demás –somos el Cuerpo de
Cristo, aunque individuos, tenemos una tarea que es igual de importante que la de los demás. Como el Cuerpo de Cristo, representamos la
unidad y la diversidad de su comunidad de fe. Estamos llamados siempre a funcionar como miembros reales de su elección, este año mas
que nunca –un año aceptable al Señor al embarcarnos en este Año de
la Misericordia-.
El mundo, nuestro país, nuestro estado, nuestra comunidad y nuestra
parroquia no están exentos de las enfermedades y tribulaciones del
diario vivir. Somos regiones del mundo tratando de desbaratar y destruir
una manera de vivir que no esta de acuerdo con su filosofía o forma de
vivir –el resultado final es la destrucción misma del ser humano.
Necesitamos mantenernos firmes en nuestra fe, nuestra oración, ayudar
a los más necesitados, y ejercitar nuestros derechos para corregir y
sobreponernos a las acciones de quienes buscan borrar el Cuerpo de
Cristo. La Palabra de Cristo en el Salmo: “Tus palabras, Señor, son
Espíritu y vida” nos regalan un ancla de fe y esperanza, por lo tanto no
desfallezcamos, sino que abracemos las palabras de la vida verdadera
y aceptemos la esperanza que Sus palabras nos proporcionan a todos.

The Free E-Waste Collection is scheduled for February 13, 2016 from 9:00 am to
1:00 pm. The E-Waste drive is a good way to help clean up the environment
through proper disposal of electronic waste and at the same time to be able to help
with much needed funds that are used to help the needy of our community. For a

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
As Roman Catholics, our marriage practices have their pedigree
in ancient Rome. One of the major players in shaping our practices was the warfare involved in building an empire. Soldiers vanished and sometimes never returned. Women began to manage
their lives and to make decisions. The old family values were replaced by patriotic ones, and religion was more attuned to the
gore and glory of battle, a religion of the state, not of the family.
Weddings were still family celebrations, but had a public face. The
bride wore a white toga and a red veil and walked to her new
home. There, she and her husband joined their right hands and
gave consent to each other, not relying on her father to give consent for her. Religion was optional: a pagan priest might be invited
or not, and even without the ceremony, society agreed by common law that a year of living together equaled marriage consent.
By the same token, marriage by consent also meant divorce was
on the same legal footing, and did not require the courts or civil
declarations. This is the world-view the first Christians inherited,
and it was up to them to determine what was good and to hold

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El día 3 de febrero se celebra entre misas, mariachis, fuegos artificiales y muchas expresiones de religiosidad popular, la fiesta de
Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de Suyapa en Honduras. Fue
un sábado del mes de febrero, cuando Alejandro Colindres, un
joven humilde labrador, y Jorge Martínez, un niño de ocho años,
la encontraron.
Según la tradición estos llegaron cansados a la quebrada del
Piligüín. Acostándose sobre el suelo, Alejandro sintió lo que le
parecía una piedra en su espalda. Por más que intentaba arrojarla
lejos, cuando se acostaba sentía la misma piedra. Por fin en lugar de tirarla, la puso en su mochila y al amanecer descubrió que
no era piedra sino una pequeña imagen de María (6.5 cm.) con
rostro indígena tallada en madera.
En 1780 se le construyó un templo y en 1796 se registró su primer milagro. El Papa Pió XII la proclamó Patrona de la República
de Honduras en 1925. En las advocaciones latinoamericanas ella
es nombrada como la fortaleza de los humildes.

A NEW EVANGELIZATION
Come to a series of 15 workshops. By
means of a woven pattern of meditations
on the Word, intensive prayer, community
reflection and silencing exercises,
participants of the workshops will slowly
become filled with a peace that surpasses
all understanding. Result? Overcoming of
complexes, traumas, controlling your
nerves, emotion stability and joy of living.
We can become more like Jesus—
sensitive and merciful, unconcerned with
self and concerned about others. The
workshops also offers a limited and humble service—teaching you how to pray and to
live a Christian life.
Each workshop runs for two hours each
Wednesday beginning on January 27,
2016—one in the morning from 9:30-11:30
am and one in the evening from 7:00-9:00
pm in St. Lawrence classroom #1. For

CRAB FEED DINNER 2016 The Annual Crab
Feed Dinner will be held on Friday, February 5,
2016. Tickets are on sale after each Mass,
please purchase tickets now before they are
sold out. There will be raffles drawings, great
food, and a wonderful evening with friends.
