seventeenth Sunday in ordinary time
Looking Ahead
In just a few short days it will be August. The month of
August is dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The
entire month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary
Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This
symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and
awakens in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal
harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in
the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year
represents the time of our pilgrimage to heaven during which we hope for
reward.

August is often considered the transitional month in our seasonal calendar. It
is the time of the year we begin to wind-down from our summer travels and
vacations and prepare for Autumn — back to school, fall festivals, harvest
time, etc. The Church in her holy wisdom has provided a cycle of events in its
liturgical year which allow the faithful to celebrate the major feasts in the life
of Christ and Mary. Most notably, during August, we celebrate the feast of the
Transfiguration (August 6) and the feast of the Assumption (August 15).
The other main feasts of this month are St. Alphonsus Ligouri (August 1), St.
John Mary Vianney (August 4), Dedication of St. Mary Major (August 5),
Transfiguration of the Lord (August 6), St. Sixtus II and Companions and
St. Cajetan (August 7), St. Dominic (August 8), St. Lawrence (August 10),
St. Clare (August 11), Jane Frances de Chantal (August 12), Sts. Pontian
and Hippolytus (August 13), St. Maximilian Kolbe (August 14), St. John
Eudes (August 19), St. Bernard (August 20), St. Pius X (August 21), the
Queenship of Mary (August 22), St. Bartholomew (August 24), St. Louis
of France (August 25), St. Monica (August 27), St. Augustine (August 28)
and the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist (August 29).
The feasts of St. Teresa Benedicta (August 9), St. Stephen of Hungary
(August 16) and St. Rose of Lima (August 23) fall on a Sunday so they are
superseded by the Sunday Liturgy.

Sponsors Needed for RCIA
Parishioners are needed to sponsor adults inquiring into the faith
and preparing to come into full communion with the Church. A
sponsor is not required to have a degree in theology but rather a listening, active
and open heart. Time and again past sponsors have experienced the privilege of
being part of someone’s spiritual journey into the Church.
Mondays, 6:30pm - 8:30pm in Kenny Hall beginning September 14.
Sacraments will be celebrated at the 2016 Easter Vigil. For additional
information, contact [email protected].
Extraordinary Ministers Training Dates
Would you like to serve others while serving God? Then consider becoming an
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC)! Our EMHC Ministry is a
dynamic and vibrant ministry that allows parishioners to assist the Clergy in
distribution of the Eucharist. EMHCs share responsibility for distributing the
Eucharist at Masses on Saturdays/Sundays or weekdays. We are in special need of
at least two new EMHCs at each Mass, particularly for the 5:45 pm and 7:15 pm
Masses on Sundays, as well as homebound ministers to the sick. EMHCs are
scheduled at their Mass of preference. For example, if you normally attend the
9:00 am Sunday Mass, you will be scheduled at that Mass.
Training to become a NEW Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion will be
held Wednesday, August 19 and Monday, August 24 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
starting in Kenny Hall and practicing in the Cathedral. You only need to attend
one training session. The Archdiocese of Atlanta mandates refresher training for
ALL CURRENT EMHCs every three years. This training will be held Wednesday,
August 19 and Monday, August 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm in Kenny Hall.
Explanation of Annulments
If you would like to know more about the Annulment process, there will be an
informational meeting on Tuesday, July 28, from 7-9 pm in Kenny Hall. Deacon
Whitney Robichaux will provide general information to help you understand why
the Church has this process and the procedures used in the Archdiocese of
Atlanta. In addition, he will be available for questions after the session.
Registration is not necessary.

Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
The flowers on the Main altar
are given in loving memory of
Sharon K. Lisi
on her birthday by her son,
Steven.
Today’s Scripture passages are linked by God’s miraculous multiplication of food for His
people. In the First Reading, the Lord works through the prophet Elisha to provide food for
His people. In St. John’s Gospel near the time of Passover, Jesus multiplies a few loaves and
fish to feed five thousand followers. Both readings have Eucharistic implications. The
Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our faith. We become what we consume—
consuming Christ in the Eucharist leads us to discipleship in Him. St. Paul reminds us we
have received a calling form the Lord. We answer His call to discipleship through the
stewardship of sharing our time, talent, and treasure with our parish communion and poor
among us.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Pastoral Care Ministry
Linda Dyson • 404-233-2145 x440 • [email protected]
Are you Interested in Becoming a Stephen Minister?
Classes Start Soon! Deadline to apply is Thursday, August 6. If you've been
looking for a way to make a real difference in this hurting world, there's no better
way than to join the Stephen Ministry here at the Cathedral! Each person who
answers God's call to serve as a Stephen Minister is able, as a conduit of Christ's
love, to have a positive impact on another person's life at a time when he/she
needs someone to care. This ministry is named after the first lay person, Saint
Stephen, who was chosen by the Apostles to care for the needs of the early
Christians (Acts 6:1-6).
What is Stephen Ministry? For over 25 years, Christ the King’s Stephen Ministry
has offered one-to-one pastoral care for individuals experiencing a wide range of
life’s stressors – loneliness, loss of a loved one, hospitalization, separation or
divorce, spiritual crises, unemployment or job crises, a chronic illness, a terminal
illness, aging, relocation, recovery from an illness, miscarriage and/or infertility -at no cost to the receiver. Stephen Ministry trains and organizes lay persons to
provide one-to-one Christian care in and around our parish.
What is my commitment? A Stephen Minister receives 50 hours of training on
how to provide distinctively Christian care, commits to meet once a week with a
hurting person for up to one year, and is a caring advocate who listens, prays, and
leaves the cure and results to the Lord. A Stephen Minister also commits to
attending regular supervision meetings on the first and third Wednesday evenings
of each month to ensure the best possible care for his/her care receiver.
2015 Training Dates (Thursday Evenings, 6:30-9 PM): August 20 through March

When ‘Cheer up’ Doesn't Work
You’ve heard it time and time again: “Cheer up … Get over it . . . It’s not that
bad.” Maybe people have said it to you. Or perhaps you keep saying it to
yourself. But it hasn’t helped. You’re still hurting. Things are coming apart.
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to go through your struggle alone. Help is
available. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will walk with you,
listen to you, and provide confidential, one-to-one care as you sift through the
pieces and find what is truly in your heart. Contact Linda Dyson at 404-233-2675

alimentar a cinco mil seguidores. Ambas lecturas tienen implicaciones

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will
be met.
We are a very active parish with 5,500 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share
their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus
Did”. This is the mission of each disciple of Christ and, if
you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
