The Ignatian Corner!
IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE – 1
(NOTE: This article was written by Larry and Nora
Paffrath.
Fr. Dominic)
Melissa Nussbaum, an author and a columnist
for the National Catholic Reporter delivered the first
of three keynote addresses at the Ignatian Spirituality
Conference 2015. The conference entitled “Ignatian
Silence: Heart of Mission” was held at Saint Louis
University in St. Louis, Missouri during July.
Ms. Nussbaum was the homilist for the
opening prayer service of the conference and based
her comments on the story of the call of the first
disciples in Luke 5. Throughout her talk Ms.
Nussbaum used the metaphor of two different kinds
of journeys, an errand and a pilgrimage. She
described an errand as goal oriented; a task based on
speed, utility, and technology. An errand is timebound and related to a specific purpose. Often during
the week we find ourselves “running errands”. “I am
going to the grocery store, be back in fifteen
minutes.”
A pilgrimage, on the other hand, is an
encounter with wonder. It is not time-bound, but is
open-ended and open to mystery. Words in a familiar
prayer speak to our pilgrimage: “Your kingdom
come; your will be done; on earth, as it is in heaven.”
The language of the two journeys is different.
We speak of “running errands.” “I’ll be right back,”
“this will take a minute.” Pilgrimage is an
“encounter with the holy and wonder” “It is open to
mystery.” “The language of pilgrimage is the
language of song, poetry, and prayer”. In religious
tradition, language is enhanced by silence. On
pilgrimage we silence our words and thoughts to
discern God’s will for us and deepen our friendship
with God.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults [RCIA]
Luke’s Gospel opens by the Lake of
Gennesaret as Jesus prepares to address the crowd.
There are two boats moored by the side of the lake,
and the fishermen are washing their nets. They are
involved in an errand. Jesus gets into Simon’s boat
and asks him to pull out a short distance so he can
continue teaching the crowd. When Jesus finishes he
asks Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your
nets for a catch.” The fishermen are tired, they have
fished all night and caught nothing. They put their
faith in Jesus and embark on a pilgrimage - a trip to
deep water and an encounter with wonder. Their nets
were so full they were beginning to rip. They needed
the help of another boat to bring the catch in. In their
amazement at the catch the fishermen experience awe
and wonder. Jesus addresses them with words of a
pilgrimage. “Do not be afraid. From now on you
will be catching men.” Simon and the others placed
their faith in Jesus. “With that they brought their
boats to land, left everything and became his
followers.”
We too must give up our errands for
pilgrimages to go without fear into the “deep water”
of life as followers of Jesus.
Some questions for reflection:
 Am I willing to leave everything to be a follower
of Jesus?
 Are my prayers an errand or a deeper encounter
with God?
 Is Mass on Sunday an errand or a celebration of
God’s love?
 Do I recognize God’s goodness to me in daily
life?
 Am I open to mystery and to finding God in all
things and all people?
The keynote address and the entire Opening Prayer
Service are available. The scripture reading with
Nussbaum homily following are at 23:55 on the MP3
file. connect.jesuitscentralsouthern.org/isc2015
RCIA will begin on Thursday September 3, 2015 at 7PM in the Family Room. This is BEFORE Labor Day
this year. Easter Sunday will be early in 2016 and the team needs the extra week in order to cover the
program material.
If you are an adult who is unbaptized, or who wishes to become a Catholic, or a Catholic
that needs to receive First Eucharist and/or Confirmation, the RCIA Journey is for you. If
you are a fully Initiated Catholic and want to update your Faith Knowledge, RCIA is open
to ALL. If you are returning to the Catholic Church, you also may find the RCIA program
a big help in understanding what has changed and what has not.

ADOPT A (COLLEGE) STUDENT!
I’m looking for a few St. Therese families to
“adopt” a Davidson College Catholic student this
year. Students often long for a home away from
home, for the opportunity to interact with a
“normal” family, for an escape from the pressures
and craziness of college life. If you’re interested
in supporting a student (inviting them to dinner,
attending a Davidson event with them, sending an
occasional care package or card, etc.) please
contact Karen Soos, the Catholic campus minister
at Davidson: [email protected],
704.894.2423. Thank you!
The Eucharistic Congress is a very
popular, free event that will shine a
light on your soul. Plan to attend this
year’s event Friday and Saturday,
September 11 and 12 at the Charlotte
Convention Center.
SEPTEMBER 11 & 12, 2015
Sign - up sheets are available in the narthex for
parishioners who wish to avail themselves of the
convenience provided by St. Therèse Church to be
chauffeured to the Eucharistic Congress. This service
is highly recommended by the many who took
advantage of this opportunity during previous
Eucharistic Congresses. Prevent parking lot
headaches, avoid traffic nightmares and enjoy the
camaraderie of parishioners during this annual
fest! Cost of the bus is $8.00/person; $10/couple;
$15/family.
Are you a college student? The parent of a
college student?
There are Catholic Campus Ministry programs at
over ten colleges in our diocese. Check out
www.catholiconcampus.com to see what’s
available. Feel free to contact Karen Soos, the
campus minister at Davidson College, with any
questions: [email protected] (704-894-2423).
Have a great fall semester!
Free Talk on Faith and the
Environment!
Catholic Charities invites you to attend
“Following Pope Francis on the Path
to be Good Stewards of God’s
Creation” taking place on Wednesday evening,
September 16, in the New Life Center of St.
Matthew Church, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. The
event keynote speaker is Dan Misleh, Founding
Director of the Catholic Climate Covenant and former
policy advisor with the U.S. Conference of Catholic
Bishops. Attendees will explore the heart of the Holy
Father’s encyclical Laudato Si’, gaining an
appreciation for the rich tradition of Catholic social
thought on the environment. Find more information
about this presentation at www.ccdoc.org. While this
event is free, notification of your plan to attend is
requested. Please call 704-370-3225 or email
[email protected].

estudios, qué formación, cuál experiencia van a servirnos?
