THIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
June 28, 2015
From Fr. Faucher
This is my last bulletin message as pastor/administrator of Saint Mary’s Parish, although I am sure I will have some occasional
comments in the future as I assume my new role as "Pastor Emeritus."
It is a time for many thank-yous. Some of my reflections after 44 years of priesthood and 13 years in this parish are contained in
my homily for the 40th anniversary in 2011, which has been reprinted in the MAGNIFICAT parish newsletter. I will repeat only a few
things from that homily today.
One of the things I want to repeat is that Tom Faucher as a person, and Father Faucher as a priest, is the product of 1000
cooks. Beginning with my wonderful parents and my fine brothers and sisters-in-law, my life has been filled with people from whom I
have learned much. But having 1000 cooks can be difficult. I will admit that during the process of growing I have been sliced, diced,
stewed, frozen, thawed, baked, boiled, broiled and grilled – all many times.
Both as a person and as a priest I am truly not a self-made man. I am who I am, and what I am, because so many have taken
the time and effort to make me better than I was before.
I mentioned in my anniversary homily that I had many mentors, from all walks of life. I did single out five priest mentors, the first
of whom was Father John Creegan of this wonderful parish.
Father Creegan taught me many things and two of those have always stood out. As he shared with me his vision of priesthood, I
learned that the most important things for a priest to know is, first and foremost, that he must be kind. Kindness was Father
Creegan’s highest value. Secondly, he said, and this was repeated to me often by his good friend Father Tom Halpin, that
"priesthood is learned." For them, ordination was the beginning of learning to be a priest, and the learning process must last all life
long.
The other great mentors are Father Blaise Turck, a Benedictine monk at Mount Angel, Father Eugene Burke, a Paulist professor at Catholic University, Father Joe Warilow, a Benedictine monk from Quarr Abbey in England, and Msgr. Matthew Kelly, a diocesan priest from Llandudno in North Wales. Each of them, by just being who they were and being willing to share that with me, has
made me so much better than I was before I met them. Added to them, must be the great priests I have worked with over the years,
and especially Father Jesus Camacho and Father Bruno Segatta during these years at Saint Mary’s.
I have worked under eight bishops, Bishops Sylvester Treinen, Tod Brown, Michael Driscoll and now Peter Christensen here in
Boise. I worked in Britain under Bishop James Hannigan in Wrexham, Wales, and Bishop Maurice Taylor in Galloway, Scotland. I
served under Bishops Thomas Connolly and Robert Vasa in the Diocese of Baker, Oregon. Some of them were easy to work with
and some were not. But each taught me something of value.
It is the teaching of the church that the bishop is to have a special care and concern for the priests (Canon#3684), and the
priests are to have a special love and reverence for the bishop.
But priest mentors and bishops are not the daily food and drink of parish priests – it is the people of the parish who truly make a
priest who he is. And I have had the most wonderful people in my life in all the parishes in which I have had the honor to serve, in
Idaho, Oregon, Wales, Scotland and the various places in between. It is to them, to you, that I owe my greatest thanks. You have
listened to me, trusted me, disagreed with me, shared life with me, and constantly forced me to improve.
I have had marvelous people on the staffs of my parishes. Their loyalty and support of me has continued long after I have left
individual parishes.
Canon 529.§2 of the Code of Canon Law says that the parish priest is to recognize and promote the specific role which the lay
members of Christ's faithful have in the mission of the Church, and he is to endeavor to ensure that the faithful are concerned for the
community of the parish, that they feel themselves to be members both of the diocese and of the universal Church, and that they
take part in and sustain works which promote this community. The people I have the honor of being with have done this splendidly.
As I said above, I have had 1000 cooks (actually many more than that), and having 1000 cooks can be difficult. Both as a person
and as a priest I am truly not a self-made man. I am who I am, and what I am, because so many have taken the time and effort to
make me better than I was before.
I have been asked to say what my greatest accomplishments have been as a priest. That is an impossible question to answer.
But two things do stand out. The first is that every parish to which I was assigned was in some form of major pastoral difficulty when
I arrived and was much more healthy and better when I left. The second is the work I did in the early 1990s on the Diocesan Study
Project. Those who know that study say that it is still the best description of the Catholic Church in Idaho and the methodology is still
a model for Catholic Church involvement.
As I retire from being a pastor, I do not retire from being a priest. I am not sure just what the next part of my life’s adventure will
be, but I do know it will be filled with truly great people who will help me become a better person. I give my thanks to all of you.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
June 28, 2015
From Fr. Camacho
Me entristece
que, por razones de salud, tenga que dejar de hacer lo que tanto ama;
Now that Father Faucher is retiring, I want to share with you that I
am extremely grateful to God for giving me the grace to know, live and
work with Father Faucher. I've known him since 1981 (he was the first
priest of the Diocese of Boise I met) and we have worked together
since 2003. During these years, I have learned a lot from him and my
admiration and respect for him grew day by day. It saddens me that he
is stopping what he loves; but at the same time I am happy that he will
continue to be close to us.
Faucher Father, thank you for everything you've done for God, for
the Church, for your brother priests and for me. May God give you the
reward you deserve as a faithful servant. Please accept a hug from me
as a expression of my friendship and gratitude.
Your friend and servant ~ Father Jesus Camacho
