Damian & Liliana Franco Saul & Corina Oviedo Rigoberto & Aurora Rendon Thoughts From this Sunday’s Readings by Fr. John Previous reflections can be found on his blog at FrJohnMurphy.blogspot.com Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent and we continue with the theme of a journey toward fulfilment. In Biblical times when a king was about to embark on a journey, he sent a messenger out to tell the people in his kingdom to clear and repair the roads in preparation for his royal visit. That is what John the Baptist is doing in today’s gospel from Luke 3:1-6. He is the messenger sent from God to prepare the way for Jesus. However, John’s message was not about road preparation, his message is about heart preparation. John’s message was simple and clear: “prepare the way of the Lord make straight his paths.” For John preparation meant “repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” Repentance is total conversion. It means removing the obstacles that keep us away from God. Repentance is a change of heart, a change of mind and a change of behavior. Although John’s message is simple accomplishing the task can be daunting. Friday, December 11 Festivities begin at 9pm Saturday, December 12 Mass at 7:30pm Followed by Reception A Baptismal Preparation Class will be held on Sunday, December 6, at 10am in the St. Faustina Room. Classes are held on the 1st Sunday of each month, unless the first Sunday falls on a holiday weekend. Babes in arms are welcome. Contact Kathy Boats at (678) 466-1701. You can also donate online if you are an online giver. Through our own Baptism each of us takes on the same prophetic role as that of John the Baptist. Like the Prophet Baruch who we hear in the first reading and John the Baptist we are called to proclaim the vision of a level road for all of us to follow to the glory of God. We are road builders too. The roads we build are roads of peace, mercy, justice and love. We are called to help other people fill their valleys and make their rough paths smoother. Of course, we can’t help others unless our own hearts are open to the saving power of God. In today’s second reading from Philippians 1:4-6,8-11, St. Paul offers a prayer of conversion for the people of Philippi and for us as well, that our “love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that [we] may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” During this Advent Season let’s make St. Paul’s prayer our own and pray it every day so that our hearts will be ready for our King and our Savior. God our Father, we know today how to drill through mountains and level hills to build highways, but we have lost the way to each other's heart and to you. Let your Son come among us to make us inventive and daring enough to build roads of justice and love that help us encounter one another and you, our living God. We ask you this in the name of him whom we expect and who is waiting for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Parishioner Lani DeMello recently earned the title of World Champion in Rhythmic Gymnastics at the Downs Syndrome International Gymnastics World Championships in Mortara, Italy. She competed against 22 athletes from countries around the world, including Slovakia, Norway, Italy, Ireland, and Great Britain. In individual events, Lani won gold on ball and clubs, and silver on hoop and ribbon. At the conclusion of the competition, there was a Gala, in which Lani and her mom performed with her teammates to a song about a girl with Downs Syndrome - Elissa's Song by Jeff Pearson. Of her World Champion title, Lani says, "I have been practicing for many years. When they called my name as World Champion, I was crying and choked up because I was so happy." Lani has earned recognition not only by competing in Rhythmic Gymnastics, but by volunteering. In 2014, she travelled to Princeton, New Jersey, to volunteer at the US Special Olympics National Games. This past summer, Lani served as one of a select few athletes in the capacity of International Technical Official at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles. When asked what she likes best about travelling to competitions, either to compete or volunteer, Lani said, "I love talking to all my friends and spending time with them. We live in different countries so we only get to see each other at competitions."
