PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
July 19,2015
From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath
Pope Francis in his book on Marriage continues on the spiritual dimension of the sacrament. Referring to the miracle at the Wedding at Cana
( Jn.2:1-11) the Holy Father reminds us that the earthly celebration is rescued by the redeeming presence and miraculous intervention of Jesus.
Every marriage becomes a successful celebration when we turn to the Lord with our human limitations. The basic truth about marriage is in
“the permanent commitment to solidarity, fidelity, and fruitful love” unveiling the deepest longings of the human heart. In this amorphous
culture and age when people are reluctant to make a real commitment, it is a courageous act to seek strong and lasting love.
Young people should be aware of the obstacles to a permanent commitment in marriage and courageously come forward to form families and
bring forth children to the world. It is a frequent jargon to say “it is difficult out there ..” the grace of the sacrament will give them the
strength and the courage they need in marriage for a long journey together for an entire life. They need Jesus’ help to walk beside one another
in trust, acceptance, and a forgiving heart. It is the greatest inspiration for the children to see their father and mother growing together and
making each other – more of a man and more of a woman.
The Holy Father continues his rationale that the marriage is the sacrament of the love of Christ and the Church. The reality of this mutual
devotion is solidified and purified through suffering and willful acceptance of the crosses in the process. A desire to live together is a basic
undercurrent. When the human mind is not settled in this, is easily swayed by obstacles and conflicts in daily life. Prayer, individually and
together, is the source of strength for success and perseverance. A prayerful heart will receive the grace to forgive and love, no matter what.
According to the Holy Father (p. 26-34 ), the three magic words, “please, thank you, and sorry”, prayer, and making peace before making bed,
will keep the marriage a beautiful and growing experience.
Today we encounter many couples living together, having children, building families, and most often really devoted to each other. Why are
they afraid of or unwilling to make that lasting commitment in the sacrament of marriage? Is this leaving a door open to walk away, or due to
the influence of the liberal world which is constantly at war against the concept of family and holy matrimony ? it is like using all that is available but refusing to offer the security of a lasting gift of self. It does not reflect Christ’s love for us. In a loving, giving, and committed relationship, there is no room for rethinking. Our relationships should reflect Jesus’ love for us which is not over at death but remains closer even
after death.
God bless you all.

TREASURES AND TRADITIONS
When
Catholicism encounters a culture, it tends to approach the culture
with a measure of respect for its key customs, especially those touching family life. Around the world, these long‑established customs are
often received into the liturgy, sometimes with a new level of interpretation. From Old Mexico, the custom of the lasso (“cord”) has
migrated across borders, and is now firmly established in the marriage liturgy of Spanish‑speaking Catholics in the United States. It’s a
large cord, sometimes resembling rosary beads, looped around the
necks of the newlyweds in a figure‑eight shape. It is a great honor for
a person, normally a godparent or close relative, to place the lasso
around the shoulders of the couple, groom first. The lasso, a symbol
of profound unity, remains in place throughout the liturgy until removed, usually by the priest. The bride keeps the lasso as a memento
of the day, a sign of her ties of love to her husband in heart and
home. The tender ministry of the godparent in this ceremony clearly
links this sacrament of vocation th baptism. It’s not unusual to see
the lasso made of fragrant orange blossoms, harking back to very ancient pre‑Christian rituals seeking the blessings of fertility and
happiness.

Fr. Philip Kollithanath Pastor
