FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST
Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of
Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is
amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching
or ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’
two fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that
he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received
the least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the
God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a
good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue
and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will
he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence?

FE EN JESUCRISTO
El incidente que nos cuenta san Marcos en el Evangelio de hoy se basa en un doble asombro: primero, los
vecinos y parientes de Jesús se asombran de verlo enseñar en la sinagoga con tanta sabiduría, y de ver su poder
para hacer milagros. Y Jesús, a su vez, se extraña de la incredulidad de aquella gente, que no pone su fe en él, no
porque hallen alguna falta en su enseñanza o en su ministerio, sino porque conocen sus orígenes y su familia.
Aquí, como en muchos otros incidentes de su Evangelio, Marcos nos deja ver un aspecto bastante íntimo de la
parte humana de la doble naturaleza de Jesús. Para reforzar lo que quiere que veamos, Marcos nos cuenta cómo
Jesús vuelve a su pueblo, y nos hace notar que está allí entre sus familiares. Y de la gente de quienes más esperaba es que menos recibe. En la época en que estaba escribiendo su Evangelio, san Marcos trataba de enseñar una
lección muy importante para la casa de Israel, el Dios de la Alianza esperaba encontrar la fe más intensa en la
casa de Israel, pero muchas veces allí fue donde menos la encontró. Y es bueno que reflexionemos sobre esto,
nosotros que hoy día somos el Pueblo de Dios. Para que la Sabiduría de Cristo continúe en este mundo, y para
que nuestras vidas sean signos de su poder, Jesús espera hallar, y tiene que hallar, una gran fe en nosotros. ¿La
hallará? ¿O quedará, una vez más, pasmado de nuestra poca fe?

How to welcome your new priest
Requisitos para el
Matrimonio
A change in assignment for a priest to a new parish is an important part of
the life and faith journey of a priest and parish.
Solamente los novios deben hacer los arreglos
necesarios para su boda; NO los padres de los
novios, ni los padrinos. La pareja debe cumplir los
siguientes requisitos:
1. Ser miembros de esta parroquia por lo menos
un año, y asistir regularmente a la Misa los
domingos.
2. Proveer una copia de sus Licencia de
Conductor
3. Proveer una copia de sus Actas de
Nacimiento y Certificados de Bautismo
y Confirmación. El Certificado de
Bautismo debe ser actual - no más de
seis meses.
4. Si están casados por lo civil: Proveer una copia
de la Licencia de Matrimonio o Licencia del
Juez de Paz.
5. Si son divorciados o si matrimonio ha sido
anulado: Proveer una copia del Orden de
Divorcio y/o del Certificado de Anulación.
6. Hacer llegar una donación de $100 para
miembros o $300 para los que no están
registrados a la iglesia antes de la
celebración de la Misa.
7. Hacer los arreglos de la iglesia por los
menos 10 meses antes de la boda.

What happens within the life of a priest amidst these changes?
For a priest, the first weeks and months in a new parish are overwhelming.
The task of getting to know people, names, history, culture of a new parish,
plus the practical dealings of finding where everything is in the sacristy,
office and home, is tremendous.
A priest experiencing a change in assignment is also confronted by interior
challenges such as grief and loss of one community, and the
discouragement of leaving behind one's accomplishments with the prospect
of having to start all over again. The parish, too, experiences the challenge
of letting one priest go, and the acceptance of a new spiritual father. What a
time of fragility and vulnerability. What a time of grace!
For all involved, the priest and the parish, the primary grace during this
time is the participation in the paschal mystery of Jesus.
How can a parish best welcome this new spiritual father?
a. Prayerfully. Embrace your new priest with prayer. Be sure to attend
some extra daily Masses. Daily Masses are smaller, more intimate. It
allows you to get to know him and his spirituality more readily. Let him
know who you are. Yes, you might have to repeat your name often until he
remembers. Don’t assume three months from now he remembers
everyone’s names.
b. Prudently. Don’t beat a path to his door his first couple of months in the
parish. He is still getting his bearings. Often the first people a new pastor
meets are those who have complaints or “suggestions.” He will welcome
these, but let him get his feet on the ground first. Any pressing issues might
need to come from parish leadership first. Parishioners often fear changes a
new pastor will make and often are frustrated when he doesn't make them
fast enough! Give him time.
c. Respectfully. Just as the new priest or pastor tries not to compare the
new parish to his old parish, so parishioners need to allow the new pastor
to be himself and not compare him to the former pastor. Allow him to be
different. His needs will be different as well as his strengths.
d. Hospitality. One of the greatest gifts I received from new parishioners
in a transition was a basket of “comfort food.” It was waiting for me when
I arrived. I felt welcomed ... they knew I was coming. Drop a letter or card
of welcome to the new priest. Invite him out to dinner. He can always
decline if he is unable. The mere invitation makes a huge impact. There is
nothing worse for a priest, than the feeling of arriving to a new parish
thinking, “I wonder if they know I am here?”
A change in assignment for a priest to a new parish is an important part of
the life and faith journey of a priest and parish. It is a time of grace,
newness and excitement. Welcome your new priest for you are welcoming
Christ. The priest who feels welcomed in turn will recognize Christ in you!
Marriage
Requirements
Only the bride and groom are to make the
necessary arrangements for their wedding;
NOT the parents of the bride or groom, nor their
sponsors. The couple should meet the following
requirements:
1. Be members of this parish for at least
one year, and attend Sunday Mass
regularly.
2. Provide copies of their driver’s license
3. Provide copies of their birth, baptism, and
confirmation
certificates.
Baptismal
Certificate cannot be older than six (6)
months.
4. If married by Justice of the peace: Provide a
copy of Marriage License or License from
Justice of the Peace.
5. If divorced or if marriage was annulled:
Provide a copy of the Final Divorce
Decree and/or Certificate of Annulment
6. Offer a church donation of $100 for parish
members or $300 for non parishioners
Donation must be received in the office prior
to the Celebration Mass.
7. Make church arrangements at least 10 months
prior to the wedding:

all

interview has been completed with
