SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES
St. Peter Claver: Saint Peter Claver, S.J., was a Spanish
Jesuit priest and missionary born in Verdú who, due to his
life and work, became the patron saint of slaves, the
Republic of Colombia and ministry to African Americans.
During the 40 years of his ministry in Colombia it is
estimated he personally baptized around 300,000 people.
He is also patron saint for seafarers.
The Most Holy Name of Mary: The Feast of the Holy
Name of Mary, is a feast day celebrated on September 12
to honor the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It has been
a universal Roman Rite feast since 1684, when Pope
Innocent X included it in the General Roman Calendar to
commemorate the victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

CHOOSING LIFE
God made us for a reason. His love is our life
mission. This mission enables us to find our true
identity. If we choose to embrace this mission, we will
have a new perspective on many issues, not just the
family. To live the mission of the domestic church
means that Catholic families will sometimes live as
minorities, with different values than their surrounding
culture. Our mission of love will require courage and
fortitude. Jesus is calling, and we can respond,
choosing lives of faith, hope, charity, joy, service and
mission.

LITURGY CORNER
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Orthodox Christians have a saying about the
reality of sin. They speak of “this holy and sinful
Church, which we love.” We know all too well the
effects of sin on the faith community. From our
earliest days, we have seen baptism as a place where
the old self dies in Christ, dies to sin, and rises to new
life. Our ancestors in faith held that post baptismal
major sin was unthinkable. Yet, as one Baptist
minister once explained, “We know that sin is
drowned in the water, but it would appear that the
devil is a pretty good swimmer.”
The origins of the sacrament of penance have to
do with a similar insight among bishops in the early
church. A critical question for them was whether or
not a baptized person who had committed a public sin
could be re established in church life, forgiven, and
restored. Forgiven, yes, was an early answer, but
restored was another matter. Penance would be a
permanent lifestyle for the forgiven; they would live at
the margins of the community, clearly visible in
distinctive garments, and their access to the table of
the Eucharist was restricted. The harsh beginnings of
public penance led in time to a true treasure of our
tradition: the ability to find our way home through the
ministry of others, and a way for all of us sinners to
experience the gentle embrace of our forgiving Lord.

several private care homes, all caring for the needs of
our sick and infirm. Volunteers are needed to bring
Christ to the many people residing in these facilities.
Commitment can be from 1 hour per month to 2 hours

leave a message for Deacon Jim Delgado at the
parish office (505-256-9818).
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD:
For the first 20 minutes of the 10:00 AM Mass on
Sundays, children (Kindergarten thru 3rd grade) meet

The children return to their parents for the Liturgy and
