Hi, Fellow Parishioners,
God so loved the world he
wants everyone to be better,
in fact, to be holy. He is, in
particular, choosing you! He
wants you now and the little
book I have written will guide
you specifically on how to
act, behave, pray and ask
God for graces and wisdom
on how to do it.
This little book is filled
with dynamic solutions on
how to improve your life and
to become happier in doing
so. You may give up a few
bad habits and thus bring joy
and happiness in your life
and make you become one
of God’s people. Perhaps
giving away some of your
toys for a solid foundation in
heaven is well worth it. You
get a feeling you are living
heaven on earth.
The book, “The Power to
be Holy,” is only $15.00
(paperback) and is well worth it. It will be available Jason’s
Plaza this morning.
Thank you so much,
Deacon Bernard R. Swift, D. Min. —(562) 697-4826

Next weekend, November 21/22, we will
take the annual diocesan collection for
“National Needs.” This combined collection benefits:

Catholic Communications, supports all forms of communication (internet, radio, television, newspapers) to
bring Catholic messages of faith to millions of people
who may otherwise not receive it.
Catholic University of America, funding academic
scholarships.
Special envelopes are in the pews.
Olive Wood Handcraft Sale
Family from the Holy Land (Bethlehem) will be selling religious, handcrafted items made from the olive wood next
weekend, November 21/22. Proceeds from the sale of
these items will go towards support of Catholic families
there who are experiencing political strife. Due to the violence and discrimination towards Christians in the Holy
Land, most of the families have left their country for different parts of the world; Christians are now less than 1.2
percent of the population. Please support these families
through your purchases.
Advent Wreaths, Candles & More
The St. Paul Mission Circle Gift Shop
can supply all your Advent needs – prayer
books, Advent calendars, candles, etc. Also, check out all Christmas items and
Christmas gift items that are available for

their Christmas as happy as ours!

The Book of the Names of the Dead
During the month of November, we especially remember in prayer the deceased members of our families and
of our parish community. A book in which parishioners
write the names of their deceased is in place near the
baptismal font. Take a few moments to write in the names
of your loved ones who have died. These books are kept
over the years. If you wrote names in the book last year
(or previous years), you need only add the names of
those who have passed away since then.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reflections from the
Gloria Dei Choir
For the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gloria Dei Choir sings two of the most beloved works in the sacred choral literature. During the
Preparation of the Gifts, we sing J.S. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of
Man’s Desiring,” arranged for chorus and organ by Arthur
Olaf Andersen. Originally the 10th and last movement of
Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV
147, the work was scored by Bach for chorus, optional
oboe, trumpet, violin, viola, and basso continuo. The familiar English text is not a translation of the text used by
Bach; rather, it is a poetic translation by esteemed British
poet Robert Bridges of the text sung to the hymn tune
Bach used for this movement of the cantata. While this
tune is commonly thought to have been composed by
Bach, it was actually the work of 17th Century German
virtuoso violinist and composer Johann Schop.
During communion, the choir sings Maurice Duruflé’s
“Ubi Caritas,” the first and most popular of a set of four
motets composed by Duruflé in 1960 based on Gregorian
chant themes. The text is one of the oldest in the church
tradition and was included in early Christian gatherings
that preceded the formalization of the Mass. The melody
was composed sometime in the early Medieval period,
certainly before the 10th Century. Duruflé’s setting includes only the refrain and the first stanza of the hymn in
Latin, which is translated below.
Where charity and love are, God is there.
Christ’s love has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.
Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
And may we love each other with a sincere heart.
Where charity and love are, God is there. Amen.
—Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director
Gloria Dei Choir

Getting
through the
Tough Times
“It’s going to get worse
before it gets better” is
a phrase that prepares
us to buckle up for a
rough ride. We know
that enduring a difficult
time will require some
strenuous physical or
emotional energy on
our part before we experience the calm of
normality. Our past
experience tells us that
we can endure the difficult pressure better
when we know how
long it will last and if we know that something better
awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding
to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s
kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of
this world.

shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
