Christ our Savior is born!

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY / Year of Consecrated Life
FR. GÉRARD’S CORNER
Though Christmas joy is mere days away,
the prayer preceding today’s readings
emphasizes that only Jesus’ passion and
cross can bring us to the glory of his
resurrection. Fittingly, Hebrews declares
Jesus’ self-sacrifice to be the price of our
salvation.
The Visitation Gospel features John the Baptist leaping
for joy in Elizabeth’s womb. As David leapt and danced
before the Ark bearing precious signs of God’s abiding
presence (tablets of the law, Aaron’s rod, heavenly manna),
so John leaps as Mary arrives, bearing Jesus—the law’s
incarnate fulfillment, humanity’s true Shepherd, living
Bread from heaven. Yet this rejoicing too is born of selfsacrifice. How daunting Mary’s own preoccupations must
have been, as a young unwed mother whose pregnancy
caused righteous Joseph such anguish. Yet instantly,
unselfishly, Mary transcends herself, hastening despite
her perilous condition over dangerous terrain to assist an
older relative.
In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy just begun, Pope
Francis exclaimed how much he desired this Jubilee Year
to be steeped in mercy, so that we disciples might go out
to everyone, bringing the balm of God’s tender mercy
both to believers and those far from faith, signaling that
God’s kingdom is already present among us. Because by
Baptism and Eucharist we, like Mary, bear the living
Christ within us, going out to serve others in self-sacrificing
love is our best Christmas gift to all.

Living Mercy in
the Jubilee
Year of Mercy
December 20 - 4th Sunday of Advent
Mercy is "the beating
heart of the Gospel"
Pope Francis writes:
"It is absolutely essential for the
Church and for the credibility of her
message that she herself live and
testify to mercy." Mercy, he says, is
"the beating heart of the Gospel
(Misencordtae Vultus).
To live mercy, we must rediscover
both the spiritual works of mercy
(counsel the doubtful, instruct the
ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort
the afflicted, forgive offences, bear
patiently those who do us ill, and
pray for the living and the dead), and
the corporal works of mercy (feed
the hungry, give drink to the thirsty,
clothe the naked, welcome the
stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead). Which
spiritual works of mercy might Christ
be calling you to practice? Which
corporal works of mercy?

DID YOU KNOW?
Help kids understand boundaries
during the holidays . . .
Christmas is a time for families and
extended aunts, uncles, and cousins to
gather to celebrate the season together.
Your children should be comfortable
around their family members, but they
should also know the limits of their comfort zones and
what to do if someone crosses a line – too many hugs
and kisses or inappropriate tickling. Your children should be
comfortable saying “NO” whenever things cross their
lines, and they should know that you’ll back them up. For
a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Know the Warning Signs:
Just Where Is the Boundary Line?” email: [email protected].

fuertes, o no.
