GÉRARD’S CORNER Two days from now in Rome, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the “Holy Door” to signal the opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Fittingly, Baruch bids God’s crushed and scattered people exchange robes of mourning and misery for the splendor of God’s mercy, restoring them to peace, vindicating them with justice, and gathering them for worship. Paul confidently declares that God will continue fulfilling such promises by increasing believers’ love and sharpening their discernment of enduring values. But because reality around us and within us can make such prophecies seem overly optimistic, the time has come, Pope Francis declares, for the Church to let God’s mercy reawaken us to new life and instill in us the courage to look to the future with hope, beginning right here, right now. Thus, in today’s Gospel, Luke solemnly lists the secular and sacred powers that seem to control earth’s destiny, then quietly reveals the event that forever changed political and religious history. Not in sacred temple or in powerful palace, but in the barren desert, to a seemingly powerless hermit, God speaks a word that will eventually cleanse the temple, topple thrones, and declare redeemed the very ones whom religious authorities have judged to be lost and powerful rulers have dismissed as worthless. Luke’s historical references express the gospel’s fundamental conviction that God’s mercy accomplishes humanity’s salvation not despite human beings nor apart from human history, but in and through the ordinary, the flawed, and the least likely instruments—even us! Carlos Valencia, CJM, Assoc. Pastor Rev. Lawrence Goodwin, CJM, Assoc. Pastor Deacon Son Hoang, Pastoral Administrator Deacon Michael A. Perez, Sr. Deacon The Jubilee Year of Mercy begins on December 8, 2015, the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. Here is one of the important themes for reflection during this important year. Jesus is the “face” of the Father’s mercy Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Francis writes in Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, is the “face” of the Father’s mercy—he reveals the mercy of God by his words, actions, and person. We follow Jesus’ example when we open ourselves to the Father’s mercy by looking “sincerely” into the eyes of our brothers and sisters, including those “who are denied their dignity.” How have you experienced the Father’s mercy in your own life? How might Jesus be calling you to look “sincerely” into the eyes of those who are denied their dignity? Ideas for Living Mercy during the Jubilee Year There are many ways we can respond to the call to live mercy. Here are a few ideas: Put Two Feet of Love in Action. Use the “Two Feet of Love in Action” guide to consider how you can strengthen both charitable works and social justice at home and as part of your faith community. Visit www.usccb.org/twofeet for more information. • Get Involved Locally. Explore the map at PovertyUSA.org to find local organizations that practice mercy by learning about and addressing poverty. Or, contact your diocesan director for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. • Engage Your Faith Community. With your faith community, use Pope Francis’ prayer for the Jubilee Year, and the resources mentioned below to pray, reach out, learn, and act during the year. Visit WeAreSaltAndLight.org for stories of how communities of faith around the country are living mercy. • Attend the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering (Jan. 23-26, 2016). This year’s theme is Called to Live Mercy in Our Common Home (www.CatholicSocialMinistryGathering.org). • Participate in Action Alerts on issues of life and dignity from the U.S. Catholic bishops. (cqrcengage.com/catholicbishops) More Resources: • Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization has a Jubilee Year of Mercy website (www.im.va). • USCCB Evangelization and Catechesis has a webpage on the Year of Mercy which includes articles, resources, links and more (www.usccb.org). • Learn about the U.S. Catholic bishops’ work on restorative justice and criminal justice reform (www.usccb.org/jphd). • Catholic Mobilizing Network resources on restorative justice and criminal justice reform include a Jubilee Year of Mercy Prayer Card, several Jubilee Year of Mercy Podcasts, a Living the Year of Mercy Workshop, and more (www.CatholicMobilizingNetwork.org). • Catholic Relief Services has a Prayer for the Year of Mercy, homily helps, Live Mercy sessions, and a clergy workshop for the Jubilee of Mercy (coming soon at www.crs.org Page 4 Jubilee Year of Mercy YOUTH MINISTRY A Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults ♦ Are you feeling called to deeper faith? ♦ Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Page 5 Jubilee Year of Mercy December 6, 2015 THE GIVING TREE Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of our Savior - Jesus Christ! Christmas is also a time for family, food, and gifts! However, for many local families, the Christmas season is often a very difficult time of year. Concerns from low-income families struggling to make ends meet with rent, heating, food costs, etc…often means children aren’t able to receive anything beyond the basic, such as a Christmas gift. What is the Giving Tree? The St.John Eudes Christmas Giving Tree is an important program in which less fortunate children receive Christmas gifts through the generosity of our parishioners. How does it work? Beginning of December, low-income applicants contact Mrs. Tish Byrne of SJE Children’s Ministry what gifts their child would need or like for Christmas. The requests are not just for toys and games but often for basic needs such as: socks, hats, gloves, jackets, pants, boots, shoes, shirts, blankets, etc. Mrs. Byrne will hang the gift tags on a Christmas tree and parishioners are invited to grab one or two. The gifts are then bought and dropped off in the Church Nartex, there will be huge boxes for intakes. The gifts are then distributed to the families in time for Christmas. 2014 - gifts for over 700 children! In 2014, we were able to provide gifts to over 700 children in need in the San Fernando Valley. Please new and unwrapped gifts only! Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home, Pope Francis' recent encyclical will be the topic. Jack Jezreel, from Just Faith will be the speaker and as always you may expect a thoughtful presentation followed by a lively discussion. The cost will be $6 for a delicious lunch and dessert. Tickets will be sold after Masses on December 6. Tickets will also be sold in the parish office starting November 30. For further information, please contact Mary Ann Cummins Prager at: [email protected]. RED CROSS THANK YOU The Red Cross expresses gratitude to each person that gave the Gift of Life on October 18th. Of the 63 blood donors who registered, they were able to collect 59 units making it possible to help save the health and lives of 177 patients in our local hospitals. What a blessing it will be to start the New Year by giving the Gift of Life again to those in need. CHRISTMAS FOOD COLLECTION Help a needy family by donating food for their Christmas Food Box. Shop safely this Christmas . . . If you let your kids go to the mall by themselves to buy Christmas presents, you should talk to them about potential dangers they need to guard against. Christmas is the busiest time of year for commercial retail, which means that malls and shopping centers will be more crowded, and younger kids and teens who are alone may be a target for kidnappers and other dangers. Talk to your children about being aware of their surroundings, and where to go for help. Be in contact with them while they’re shopping, and have a check-in place and time set if you’re splitting up.
