Bringing Spirituality to Life
Loyola Institute for Spirituality (LIS) was founded in 1997 as the successor to the Manresa Retreat House
in Azusa, CA. Now headquartered in Orange, LIS provides many programs and services for individuals,
parishes, and dioceses throughout Southern California and beyond.
The ministry of LIS reflects the Jesuit commitment to Ignatian Spirituality, the vision of St. Ignatius of Loyola
(1491-1556), and lay ministry in service to the Church and the world. Our programs are multi-ethnic and
multi-lingual: most offered in English, many in Spanish, and some also in Korean.

Celebration), tôi gửi thư này để cách riêng chào mừng quý Anh Chị và mong mỏi được có dịp gặp gỡ,
thăm hỏi, và cầu nguyện với quý Anh Chị. Việc quý Anh Chị đến tham dự Đại Hội này luôn là một hồng
ân cho Giáo phận chúng ta và cho cả Giáo Hội.
Năm nay chúng ta còn có cơ hội đặc biệt kỷ niệm 50 năm ngày bế mạc Công Đồng Vatican II vào
năm 1965! Một trong những hoa trái của Công Đồng và là sự canh tân Nhiệm thể Chúa Ki-tô là Hội nghị
các Giám mục trong những năm qua. Mười năm sau ngày bế mạc Cộng Đồng, Đức Chân phước Giáo
Hoàng Phao-lô VI đã ban hành một văn kiện quan trọng về Phúc âm hóa mà cho đến nay vẫn là tài liệu
hướng dẫn cho tất cả chúng ta. Tài liệu này mang tên là Evangelii Nuntiandi, hay là “Về việc Phúc Âm
Hóa Thế Giới Ngày Nay.”
Trong phần kết thúc của văn kiện cao quý này Đức Giáo Hoàng Phao-lô VI đã ghi: “Cầu mong cho thế
giới của chúng ta ngày nay - một thế giới vẫn còn băn khoăn tìm kiếm hay hy vọng - sớm nhận được
Tin Mừng, không phải qua những người rao giảng buồn chán hay thất vọng, thiếu kiên nhẫn hoặc lo
lắng, nhưng qua những thừa tác viên của Phúc âm có đời sống chiếu tỏa lòng nhiệt thành, những
ngưới đã nhận được niềm vui của Chúa Ki-tô và sẵn sàng chấp nhận hy sinh cả cuộc sống để nước
Chúa được rao giảng và Giáo Hội Chúa được thiết lập ngay giữa trần gian.”
Trong khi chúng ta chuẩn bị cho Hội nghị về Gia Đình năm nay và nhớ về Hội nghị đặc biệt năm
ngoái, chúng ta cũng nhớ đến lời của Đức Giáo Hoàng Phan-xi-cô trong Thông điệp Evangelii Gaudium
để trở nên những nhà truyền giáo hân hoan của Phúc âm trong tất cả những gì chúng ta làm. Trong
những năm qua chúng ta cũng đã có nhiều nỗ lực và chương trình rao giảng trong chiều hướng đó – là
trở nên những sứ giả hân hoan của Phúc âm và sống bằng việc rao giảng theo gương Chúa Giê-su,
cũng như mời gọi những người khác theo Ngài, đặc biệt là những người trong gia đình, bạn hữu, và
những người khác mà ta gặp mỗi ngày!
Năm nay chủ đề của ngày Đại hội Mục Vụ Giáo phận là “Gia Đình: Nơi Nẩy sinh Đời sống Môn Đệ.”
Đại Hội sẽ được tổ chức vào ngày thứ Bảy 10 tháng 10, 2015 tại Trường Trung Học Mater Dei. Đại Hội sẽ
chú trọng về việc mời gọi làm môn đệ, mời gọi sống đời sống mật thiết với Chúa Ki-tô mà mỗi người tín
hữu trở nên người rao giảng Phúc âm. Tiến trình để trở nên “nguời rao giảng” gồm có ơn gọi, hoán cải,
xác tín, chứng nhân, và phục vụ. Do đó tôi mời gọi tất cả các Anh Chị tham dự ngày Đại hội Mục Vụ
Giáo phận và bắt đầu cuộc hành trình cầu nguyện sâu xa, tìm cách trở nên một môn đệ tốt hơn, và làm
cho những người khác cũng trở thành môn đệ nước Chúa. “Do đó hãy ra đi đến mọi miền thế giới!”

Tại xứ sở này, biết bao cuộc tình lãng mạn, hôn nhân tuyệt đẹp nhưng kết thúc bằng ly dị. Bên cạnh đó,
nhiều gia đình đang đối diện với con cái đồng tính luyến ái, sống chung trước hôn nhân… Chúng ta nên
làm gì theo hướng dẫn của Thượng hội đồng Giám mục 2014, và Đại hội thế giới về gia đình 2015?
Linh Mục Anthony Đào Quang Chính hường xuyên thuyết trình tại nhiều buổi cấm phòng và hội thảo. Ngài đang
cộng tác với các Nguyệt san "Đức Mẹ Hằng Cứu giúp," "Trái Tim Đức Mẹ" và "The Priest", đồng thời phụ trách
chương trình truyền hình "Mái Ấm Gia đình" của dòng Chúa Cứu thế. Với khả năng chuyên môn về giáo dục, ngài
đào sâu khía cạnh sống Tin mừng không chỉ qua thần học, mà nhất là về những phương cách sống đạo cụ thể và
thực tế.

Chúng ta có hiểu và thực sự chấp nhận chúng ta được Thiên Chúa yêu thương như thế nào không? đây
là một câu hỏi chúng ta hay hỏi mình. Lòng thương xót thì thâm sâu và phong phú hơn điều chúng ta
tưởng tượng. Nếu được hiểu đúng đắn, lòng thương xót có thể hoán chuyển đời sống và đem lại hiểu
biết sâu xa về tình yêu Chúa Giêsu đang dành cho chúng ta. Trong buổi hội thảo này, chúng ta không
chỉ tìm hiểu ý nghĩa đơn giản của lòng thương xót là xót thương và tha thứ lỗi tội lỗi, mà còn sẽ hiểu ý
nghĩa sâu xa của nó, đó là cuộc trò chuyện giữa hai người có quan hệ mật thiết với nhau, và là mối liên
kết giữa ta với Chúa.
Linh Mục Gioan-Phanxicô Vũ Thế Toàn là một tu sĩ dòng Tên. Cha tốt nghiệp Đại học trong lãnh vực văn chương
và trong các phân khoa về Tu đức, Triết học và Thần học. Hiện nay cha đặc trách Mục Vụ Đại Học tại UC Irvine.
Khi thời giờ và điều kiện cho phép, cha nhiệt tình giúp các khóa hội thảo, tĩnh tâm cho mọi giới.

CÔNG GIÁO MỸ VIỆT?
Từ nền tảng tiên khởi của đạo Công Giáo ở Việt Nam
đến việc xây dựng một cộng đồng Công Giáo Mỹ Việt,
đức tin đã được vận chuyển và tăng cường là do người
giáo dân. Một đức tin trong chuyển động diễn tả kinh
nghiệm sống liên tục và căn tính của người Công Giáo
Mỹ Việt. Bài chia sẻ này đầu tiên sẽ phác họa một lịch
sử vắn tắt của người Công Giáo Việt ở Mỹ. Thứ hai, việc
lưu tâm đến việc xây dựng nhà thờ, địa khu và những
cộng đồng sẽ xác định thế nào là người Công Giáo Mỹ
Việt. Thứ ba, một cuộc thảo luận về những thách đố
hiện tại, những đóng góp và niềm hy vọng cho sự phát
triển của cộng đồng Công Giáo Mỹ Việt.
Linh Mục Linh Hoang OFM , Ph.D. là một Giáo Sư thuộc ngành Tôn Giáo tại Trường Đại Học Siena, Loudonville,
New York. Cha là một linh mục Dòng Phanxicô thuộc Tỉnh Holy Name (Thánh Danh Chúa) ở New York. Cha đã
xuất bản các bài viết trong lãnh vực thuộc về Công Giáo Á Châu Mỹ, Công Giáo Việt Nam, Di Dân, Toàn Cầu Hóa,
Thần Học Lịch Sử, và cách thức thực hành tôn giáo liên thế hệ. Cuốn sách Rebuilding Religious Experience (Tái
kiến thiết Cảm Nghiệm Tôn Giáo) được xuất bản vào năm 2007 là luận án tiến sĩ của ngài. Cha đã xuất bản các bài
viết và những chương trong các tác phẩm như New Theology Review, American Catholic Studies, Horizons,
Multicultural Review, Asian Theology Review, Asian Horizons, và The Catholic Studies Reader. Hiện nay, Cha
đang giữ chức vụ cố vấn cho Hội Đồng Giám Mục Công Giáo Hoa Kỳ với nhiệm kỳ ba năm để lưu tâm đến các nhu
cầu của người Công Giáo thuộc Châu Á và Thái Bình Dương.

Để được sai đi, chúng ta là những người tông đồ cần có ý thức sâu sắc về chính mình cũng như về gia
đình và cộng đoàn. Khi mình biết mình rõ hơn, thì mình sẽ dễ dàng được chữa lành hơn, và sau đó
được sai đi làm nhân chứng phục vụ cho tha nhân hữu hiệu hơn. Buổi hội thảo này sẽ đọc lại Dụ Ngôn
Người Gieo Giống (Mat 13: 3 - 9) trong bối cảnh gia đình để mỗi người có cái nhìn và hiểu biết về mình
thành thật hơn, nhận ra được những điểm tốt cũng như những thiếu xót của mình để chữa lành và xây
dựng gia đình cộng đoàn tốt đẹp hơn. Buổi hội thảo sẽ được trình bày qua cách chiêm niệm Linh Thao
của Thánh Y Nhã. Do đó, đòi hỏi tham dự viên không những ngồi nghe, suy tư, mà còn tích cực cộng
tác vào những gì mình được mời gọi tham gia.
Linh Mục Hưng Phạm sinh ở Việt Nam và định cư ở Mỹ vào những năm đầu của trung học. Sau khi ra trường đại
học Regis University tại Denver với bằng cử nhân Toán, Hóa, Sinh, cha vào Dòng Tên năm 1993. Sau khi nhận tác
vụ linh mục năm 2006, cha đi học Linh Đạo Y Nhã tại trường Đại Học Comillas Pontificia Universidad de Madrid ở
Tây Ban Nha, và xong bằng tiến sĩ giáo hội (STD) vào tháng 12 năm 2011. Bắt đầu từ mùa thu 2012 tới nay, cha dạy
Linh Đạo Y Nhã trong Trường Thần Học Dòng Tên của Trường Đại Học Santa Clara University tại Berkeley.

Dear brothers and sisters, friends all in the Lord,
I am writing months in advance of this year’s Diocesan Ministries Celebration (DMC) to welcome you
personally and looking forward to the chance to meet, visit, and pray with many of you. Your
attendance at this celebration is always a great blessing for our local Church and beyond!
We are especially blessed this year to be having our celebration in view of the 50th Anniversary of
the closing of the Second Vatican Council in l965! One of the ongoing fruits of the Council and renewal
of the Body of Christ is the Synod of Bishops over the course of the years. Ten years after the close of
the Council, Blessed Pope Paul VI issued a “landmark” document on Evangelization which is still
foundational for all of us today, entitled Evangelii Nuntiandi, or “On Evangelization in the Modern
World.”
ENGLISH
In the closing words of this great document Pope Paul says “And may the world of our time, which is
searching, sometimes with anguish, sometimes with hope, be enabled to receive the Good News not from
evangelizers who are dejected, discouraged, impatient or anxious, but from ministers of the Gospel whose
lives glow with the fervor, who have first received the joy of Christ and who are willing to risk their lives so
that the kingdom may be proclaimed and the Church established in the midst of the world.”
As we prepare for this Year’s Synod on the Family and have reflected on last year’s Extraordinary
Synod, we also recall the similar words of Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium to be joyful missionaries
of the Gospel in all that we do. In the past years, there have been a variety of well thought out planned
efforts at evangelization to do just that – to be joyful ambassadors of the Gospel, and to live out the new
evangelization in following Christ, as well as to invite others to follow Him, especially our family
members, friends and all who come our way daily!
This year’s theme of our annual Diocesan Ministries celebration is “The family: where discipleship
begins”. It will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 on the campus of Mater Dei High School. The focus
of this event is the call to discipleship, the call to live the life in Christ that every baptized person has to
be an evangelizer. The journey of becoming “one who evangelizes” involves call, conversion,
conviction, witness and service. Therefore, I would like to invite all to attend the DMC event and start a
journey of deepening our prayer life, of learning how to become better disciples ourselves and of
making disciples of others for the Kingdom of God. “Go therefore to all nations!”

A-2567 THE FAMILY: WHERE DISCIPLESHIP BEGINS...
Father John Hurley, CSP was ordained in the Paulist Community in 1977. He holds a Master of
Divinity degree from the Washington Theological Union and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the
Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. He is the former Executive Director for the US Conference
of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for Evangelization, the National Pastoral Life Center in New
York City and the Department of Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. While in
Baltimore, he co-chaired the first three Mid-Atlantic Congresses for Catholic Leaders. In 2014,
Fr. Hurley is launched New Evangelization Strategies as a Paulist ministry to assist Pastoral

Franciscan spirituality? Consider a workshop that
explores the profound insights from one of the greatest
saints of history: Francis of Assisi. This workshop will
cover major components that characterize Franciscan

Most Catholics think of the Holy Family as consisting only of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Yet the New Testament also
mentions certain “brother and sisters of Jesus.” Who were these people? How are they related to Jesus? What else do
we know about the grandparents and the extended family of Jesus? This workshop will carefully explain both the
biblical evidence and the traditions and official teachings of the Catholic Church about Jesus’ own family.
Fr. Felix Just, SJ, Ph.D., is Executive Director of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, CA. He earned his Ph.D. in New
Testament Studies from Yale University, and taught at Loyola Marymount University, University of San Francisco, and Santa Clara
University. He is the author of seven audio CD programs produced by Now You Know Media, is webmaster for the Catholic Biblical

A parent's lived faith is of such importance to the faith formation of their children that it is almost impossible to
provide an adequate substitute. This workshop will explore the potential of intergenerational learning in the RCIA
Adapted for Children. What are the circumstances that bring these families to our parishes and how can the faith of
the parent be strengthened while supporting the conversion of the child preparing for full initiation?
Paula Dougherty has over 35 years of experience in pastoral ministry and a passion for supporting faith that is practiced and lived
out in the domestic church. She has directed intergenerational ministry in her parish setting. She serves on the Diocesan
Catechumenate Advisory Board, and is the Director of Faith Formation for St Joseph Church in Placentia. Paula is a California
Master Catechist and has an MA in Pastoral Theology from Loyola Marymount University.

What is your essential identity? What is your fundamental purpose? What is the essential identity of Christ’s church?
What is church’s fundamental mission? Obstacles in relationships stand as obstacles to fulfilling our identity and
purpose as children of God. We will explore Scriptural insights about overcoming obstacles in relationships in order to
heal and build community. Some of things we will look at are: how to be present to God in all things, how to pray from
the heart, and how to allow suffering to transform rather than embitter.

discipleship, a safe place where Spirit-filled evangelizers are fearlessly prepared for life-long discipleship.
Rick Goodwin has served in parish ministry as Adult Director of Religious Education, and the Catechumenate. He is a past
instructor for the Biblical Institute at Los Angeles. As a team member of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, he
traveled the country sharing the wisdom of the RCIA of how it enriches the life of the parish. He is a well-known faculty member of
the Institute for Pastoral Ministry in the Diocese of Orange. He currently teaches Theology at Servite High School, Anaheim.

False images of God create obstacles in our relationship with Him. Since we are created in the image of God, false

Mar Muñoz-Visoso is Executive Director of the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church at the United States Conference of

Master of Theological Studies from the Maddonna University in Livonia, Michigan. Before moving to Washington, Mar was
executive director of Centro San Juan Diego in Denver, where she also served as director of Hispanic Ministry and editor of the

What do the New Testament letters attributed to St. Paul teach us about Christian family life? How are we to relate to

C-2578 LIFE MATTERS: CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES TO HUMAN DIGNITY
The Good News of Jesus Christ calls us to meet and to love persons face-to-face. In U.S. culture, there is a temptation
for Christians to take partisan or ‘political’ approaches to “pro-life” or “social justice” issues. In contrast, this workshop
will consider what it means to be the Church. That is, as the Body of Christ which has received the gift of love and
radical welcome in Christ, what kind of people do we need to be to be capable of offering radical hospitality to others,
especially the most vulnerable of our sisters and brothers? Pope Francis identifies these as the poor, the disabled, the
unborn and the sick, migrants and refugees, the elderly and the young who lack employment.
Dr. Greg Walgenbach is Director of Life, Justice, and Peace for the Diocese of Orange. He has over 20 years of ministry experience,
on college campuses, youth and young adult ministry, and pastoral ministry. He served as a Baptist pastor and Anglican priest
before coming into the Catholic Church with his wife and four children. Greg has a MDiv and PhD in Theology from Fuller
Theological Seminary. He is passionate about helping others become formed in the Gospel, organized for action, and rooted in
prayer.

C-2579 LANDSCAPE OF THE HEART: HEALED TO BE SENT
Discipleship entails a great deal of awareness both at the individual and communal level. For this workshop, the
Parable of the Sower (Mathew 13: 3 - 9) will be re-read and interpreted in the context of families as a way to examine
one's heart, its brokenness and graces. The workshop is designed to be an interactive exercise based on Ignatian
contemplation. Attending audiences are expected to be hands-on participation.
Fr. Hung Pham, SJ, was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States at the beginning of his high school years. After
having graduated from Regis University (Denver) with a degree in Math, Chemistry, and Biology, he entered the Society of Jesus.
After his priestly ordination, Fr. Pham went to Spain to study Ignatian Spirituality at Comillas Pontificia Universidad de Madrid
and completed his doctorate (STD) in December 2011. Since then, he has been teaching Ignatian Spirituality at Jesuit School of
Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley.

C-2582 ENCOUNTERING GOD IN DAILY LIFE
In this workshop, we will uncover how daily life serves as a key source for theological reflection. When we speak of the
Sensus Fidelium, what do we mean? What is the faith of the people? By accessing the lived experience of communities
of faith, it is possible to discern where God is leading us. In particular, this includes popular religion or the faith
practices and rituals of Catholic communities. This session will explore the small ways in which the Triune God
reveals God’s self and is present in our midst.
Lauren Frances Guerra grew up in Los Angeles, California. She is of Guatemalan-Ecuadorian descent and an active member of the
Roman Catholic Church. The study of theology combines all of the things that are most important to her: faith, culture, and social
justice. Her research interests include U.S. Latino/a Theology, Feminist Theology, and Theological Aesthetics. Her long-term goal is
to serve as an advocate for the Latino/a community through her work in theology .

D-2584 EVANGELIZATION AND CATECHESIS IN LIGHT OF A BICULTURAL PEOPLE OF
GOD
Maria-Elena Cardena was born in Mexico City, but raised in Pasadena. Her degrees are in
education and formation. She has served in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for more then 25
years, as a youth ministry consultant, a campus minister, and a pastoral associate. Currently
she is the Faith Formation Director at Our Lady of the Assumption in Claremont, CA. She is
also a doctoral student at University of La Verne.

Evangelization and catechesis can be so difficult without the added complication of
working in Spanish and English, yet this is our reality as Hispanics. For many of our
families, the parents are Spanish speaking and the children are English speaking.
How are we to produce a program that can truly evangelize and catechize the entire
family? This workshop will look at how the Church has responded in the past, how it
is responding now, and what are some strategies for evangelization and catechesis in
the bilingual, bicultural reality.

“Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian
faith.” (Misericordiae Vultus, 2015) Pope Francis has declared a year of Mercy to begin December 8, 2015. How is the
family being challenged to live out this call? Can the domestic church be called and affirmed to be the face of Mercy?
This workshop will explore the ideas of Pope Francis and how mercy can be lived out in the family.

D-2586 DIVINE SCIENCE: FINDING REASON AT THE HEART OF FAITH
Too often the media presents science and faith as being in conflict with each other. In comparison, our Catholic
tradition has long held that reason (science) and faith are the two pillars of coming to a deeper understanding of our
relationship with God. In this talk, we will discuss how our exploration of the physical world through science can
result in a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with God. We will not only address God’s existence, but explore
challenging ideas from both science and faith: quantum mechanics, relativity, miracles, free will and even life after
death. This will be an interactive journey of faith that actively engages the scientific world view.
Michael Dennin has been a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UCI since 1997, and is now Vice Provost of Teaching and
Learning. His research focuses on systems that exhibit complex behavior. Professor Dennin has won numerous teaching awards and
is well-known for popularizing science for the public through online courses and television programs. In Oct. 2015 his book Divine
Science: Finding Reason at the Heart of Faith, will be published by Franciscan Media.

AMERICAN CATHOLICS
From the earliest foundation of Catholicism in Vietnam to the building up of a Vietnamese American Catholic
community, faith has been transported and strengthened by the people. Faith in motion describes the ongoing
experience and identity of Vietnamese American Catholics. This presentation will first outline a brief history of
Vietnamese Catholics in America. Second, attention will be given to the building of churches, enclaves, and
communities defines Vietnamese American Catholics. Third, a discussion of current challenges, contributions, and
hopes for the development of the Vietnamese American Catholic community.
Fr. Linh Hoang OFM, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Siena College in Loudonville, New York. He is a
Franciscan priest of the Holy Name Province in New York. He has published articles in the areas of Asian American Catholics,
Vietnamese Catholicism, Migration, Globalization, Historical Theology, and inter-generational religious practices. His book
Rebuilding Religious Experience published in 2007 was his doctoral dissertation. He has published articles and chapters in New
Theology Review, American Catholic Studies, Horizons, Multicultural Review, Asian Theology Review, Asian Horizons, and The
Catholic Studies Reader. He is currently serving a three-year term as a consultant to the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops on Asian and Pacific Islander Catholic concerns.

We see many different types of families in the Old Testament. I would like to focus on three very different women:
Tamar, Esther, and Ruth. We discover that families come in many shapes and sizes in the Old Testament. We find that
these women often have to confront situations that are very unusual. We can learn discipleship by applying the values
of life and loyalty to these unusual situations. Ruth, Tamar, and Esther demonstrate the priority of survival in the Old
Testament.
Fr. Garrett Galvin, OFM graduated from the University of California, Irvine and joined the Franciscan Friars in 1992. He began
teaching full time at the Franciscan School of Theology in 2009, which moved to Oceanside and affiliated with the University of San
Diego in 2013. He published his first book, Egypt as a Place of Refuge (Mohr Siebeck), and has begun work on his next book, David’s
Successors: Kingship in the Hebrew Bible (Liturgical Press).

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, amigos en el Señor,
Estoy escribiendo con meses de anticipación a la Celebración Diocesana de Ministerios (DMC) del
presente año para darles la bienvenida personalmente y a la espera de poder reunirnos, conversar y orar
con muchos de ustedes. Su asistencia a esta celebración es siempre una gran bendición para nuestra
Iglesia local y mucho más.
¡Somos especialmente bendecidos este año teniendo nuestra celebración en vista del Quincuagésimo
Aniversario de la clausura del Concilio Vaticano II en 1965! Uno de los continuos frutos del Concilio y
renovación del Cuerpo de Cristo es el Sínodo de Obispos a lo largo del curso de los años. Diez años
después de la clausura del Concilio, el Beato Pablo VI publicó un documento “histórico” sobre la
Evangelización titulado Evangelii Nuntiandi, o “Sobre la evangelización en el Mundo Contemporáneo”
el cual es aún una base para todos nosotros hoy.
En las palabras de clausura de este gran documento el Papa Pablo dice “Y ojalá que el mundo actual
—que busca a veces con angustia, a veces con esperanza— pueda así recibir la Buena Nueva, no a través
de evangelizadores tristes y desalentados, impacientes o ansiosos, sino a través de ministros del
Evangelio, cuya vida irradia el fervor de quienes han recibido, ante todo en sí mismos, la alegría de
Cristo, y aceptan consagrar su vida a la tarea de anunciar el reino de Dios y de implantar la Iglesia en el
mundo”.
Al mismo tiempo que nos preparamos para el Sínodo de la Familia de este año y que hemos
reflexionado sobre el Sínodo Extraordinario del año pasado, recordamos también palabras similares del
Papa Francisco en Evangelii Gaudium a que seamos misioneros del Evangelio alegres en todo lo que
hacemos. En los últimos años, ha habido una variedad de esfuerzos bien pensados y planeados sobre
evangelización para ser justamente eso – felices embajadores del Evangelio, viviendo la nueva
evangelización siguiendo a Cristo, e invitando a otros a seguirle a Él, especialmente a los miembros de
nuestra familia, amigos y todos aquellos con quienes convivimos a diario.

El tema de la Celebración Diocesana de Ministerios de este año es “La Familia: donde el discipulado
comienza”. Esta tendrá lugar el sábado 10 de octubre, 2015 en las instalaciones de la Escuela
Preparatoria Mater Dei. El enfoque de este evento es el llamado al discipulado, el llamado a vivir la vida
en Cristo que cada persona bautizada tiene de ser un evangelizador. La jornada para convertirse en
“alguien que evangeliza” implica, llamada, conversión, convicción, testimonio y servicio. Por lo tanto,
me gustaría invitarles a todos a que asistan a este evento de DMC y comenzar una jornada de
profundización en nuestra vida de oración, de aprender cómo convertirnos en mejores discípulos
nosotros mismos y hacer discípulos a otras personas por el Reino de Dios. “¡Vayan pues a todas las
naciones!”

A-2593 LA FAMILIA, AYER, HOY Y SIEMPRE, CÉLULA DEL DISCIPULADO
“No recuerden lo de antaño, no piensen en lo de antes; miren que estoy haciendo
algo nuevo; ya está brotando, ¿no lo notan?” (Isaías 43, 18-19). Desde las aparentes
ruinas, desde los pedazos de un mundo roto, desde lo pequeño, desde lo humilde,
desde donde lo que el mundo desprecia, Dios sigue haciendo maravillas. En el
“pedazo” de familia que nos queda, sigue naciendo la esperanza y produciéndose
el milagro del discipulado. El resto de Israel es María. El resto de la Familia es la
nuestra. Desde allí Dios sigue haciendo maravillas.
Padre Pedro León Arenas, Soy un religioso y sacerdote Carmelita. Aunque por
algunos años fui profesor universitario en Bogotá, toda mi vida la he pasado en medio
del pueblo sencillo, acompañando y aprendiendo de los humildes. Los Carmelitas en la
fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen (16 de Julio), proponemos como evangelio “Junto a la
cruz, estaba María” (Juan 19,25): Hay silencio, respeto, dignidad, firmeza. El resto es
de Dios.

Mar Muñoz-Visoso es la Directora Ejecutiva de la Secretaría de la Diversidad Cultural en la
Iglesia de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos en Washington, DC. Ella
cuenta con una Licenciatura en Comunicaciones de CEU San Pablo en Valencia, España y una
Maestría en Estudios Teológicos de la Universidad Maddonna en Livonia, MI. Antes de su
llegada a Washington, Mar fue directora ejecutiva del Centro San Juan Diego en Denver donde
también sirvió como directora de Ministerio Hispano y editora del periódico diocesano, El
Pueblo Católico. Ella es casada y madre de tres niños.

C-2595 EL MINISTERIO DE LA MÚSICA LITÚRGICA: DISCÍPULOS ANTES QUE MINISTROS
El documento Cantemos al Señor nos instruye que “los músicos litúrgicos son antes que nada, discípulos, y sólo entonces son
ministros”. Dialogaremos sobre el ministerio y nuestro compromiso al ministerio que compartimos poniendo atención
al discipulado y a los cantos que sirven en la obra formadora y transformadora que acompaña a la Iglesia en oración.
Pedro Rubalcava es un compositor bilingüe y bicultural, conferencista y cantor y pastoralista. Actualmente sirve como Director de
Ministerios Hispanos en Oregon Catholic Press en Portland, OR. Ha funcionado como agente pastoral y director de liturgia en
varias parroquias en la diócesis de San Diego, donde era co-director de la Oficina para la Pastoral Juvenil y Ministerio con Jóvenes
Adultos. Rubalcava a menudo presenta en conferencias de liturgia y otros ministerios a nivel nacional, diocesano y parroquial.

El discípulo, si en realidad lo es, obedece al Maestro, sigue su ejemplo y es fiel a su Palabra. Y esa obediencia se manifiesta
fundamentalmente en una estructura dialogal. La estructura fundamental del modo como Dios entró en contacto con el
hombre no es la de una lección, sino la de un diálogo. Cuando Dios nos habla nunca lo hace de una manera abstracta o
teórica, sino de un modo concreto a partir de la situación existencial en la cual el hombre se encuentra. En todas las palabras
divinas, diversificadas a causa de la situación diversificada del hombre, hay una constante: es benevolente, misericordioso,
santo, justo, amigo. Por eso suscita confianza y deseo de seguimiento.

C-2600 LECTURA SIMBÓLICA DE LA IMAGEN DE LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE
En este taller compartiremos un análisis simbólico desde los ángulos europeos e indígenas del siglo XVI con el propósito de
armar una interpretación que ilumine el mensaje guadalupano para nuestros tiempos. Con investigaciones antropológicas y
teológicas bien fundamentadas se explorará la simbología más prominente en el ayate guadalupano, nuestra esperanza es
que te enamores más del amor de Dios a través de la Virgen de Guadalupe.
Ernesto Vega, Coordinador del Ministerio de Formación de Fe para Adultos de la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles, adquirió
licenciatura en Filosofía y Literatura Española del Seminario Arquidiócesano de San Juan –Tesina: Lectura simbólica de la imagen
de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Estudió pedagogía en CSULA y tiene una maestría en Psicoterapia Familiar de la Universidad de
Loyola-Marymount –Tesis: Familias Inmigrantes Mexicanas en Psicoterapia. Ernesto está por obtener una maestría en teología
pastoral con enfoque en la dirección espiritual. A Ernesto le apasionan las artes, la psicología y la espiritualidad.

En Juan 15: 8-9 Jesús nos dice que: Mi Padre es glorificado cuando ustedes producen abundantes frutos: entonces pasan a ser
discípulos míos. Como el Padre me amó, así también los he amado yo: permanezcan en mi amor. El caminar del verdadero
discípulo está lleno de retos y a la misma vez lleno de emoción, sentido y propósito. Pero si su experiencia como un discípulo
puede ser descrita como aburrida, sin sentido, sin pasión, y sin continuo crecimiento es necesario examinar si usted está
siendo un verdadero discípulo. Un verdadero discípulo no es un oyente pasivo al contrario el discípulo escucha con
atención, intención y deseo de aplicar lo aprendido. Aprenda cómo su discipulado le puede conducir a vivir la vida en
abundancia.
Josué Guadarrama, M. A. recibió una licenciatura en Relaciones Humanas y Psicología de la Universidad Cal State Fullerton (11) y
Maestría en Consejería Psicológica de la Universidad del Estado de Washington (WSU, 13) Ha hecho trabajo de investigación en la
Universidad del Estado de Oklahoma (OSU) y la Universidad de Michigan (UM). Actualmente cursa un Doctorado en Consejería

María-Elena Cardena nació en la ciudad de México, pero creció en los EEUU. Tiene títulos en educación y formación y ha servido
en la arquidiócesis de Los Angeles por más de 25 años como consultante de jóvenes, capellana universitaria y asociada pastoral. Hoy
es directora de Formación de Fe en Nuestra Señora de Asunción el Claremont, CA. Además es estudiante de doctorado en la

“En verdad, en verdad te digo: El que no nace de nuevo no puede entrar en el Reino de Dios" (Jn.3,3) En cada encuentro con
Cristo podemos nacer de nuevo y comenzar una vida nueva. Hay muchos modos de encontrarse con Cristo y de vivir en Él.
En efecto, toda nuestra vida es una sucesión de oportunidades en la que Cristo se nos hace presente de un modo u otro para
que aprendamos a reconocerlo y a caminar nuestra vida junto a Él. Ven a este taller a explorar los modos en que puedes
encontrarte con Cristo y vivir una vida nueva.
Roberto Rojas nacido en Mendoza (Argentina), completó sus estudios en Filosofía y Teología. Estudió Consejería Pastoral en la
Universidad de Fu-Jen (Taiwán) y obtuvo su Certificado en Ministerio Pastoral Internacional de la Universidad Loyola Marymount,
Los Ángeles. Su carrera internacional incluye docencia en escuelas, seminarios en Argentina, Taiwán, China, Papua Nueva Guinea,
y Estados Unidos. Actualmente está trabajado como Gerente de Relaciones para la Región Oeste de los Estados Unidos con CRS
(Catholic Relief Services) y enseña en el Instituto para el Ministerio Pastoral de la Diócesis de Orange y es Asesor Nacional para
Ministerio Hispano en CRS.

¿Cuál es nuestra misión hoy? Es lo que queremos reflexionar en este taller.
Hermana Silvia Vallejo, ODN es religiosa de la Compañía de María, Colombiana. Tiene una extensa experiencia en liderazgo en el
campo de la vida Religiosa, como miembro del Gobierno General y luego Superiora General y más tarde Superiora Provincial de su
comunidad, miembro de la Junta Directiva de la Unión Internacional de Superioras Generales en Roma, Presidenta de la
Conferencia de religiosos y religiosas en Colombia y miembro de la Junta Directiva de la Confederación Latinoamericana de
religiosos/as.
C-2606 FAMILIAS EN EL ANTIGUO TESTAMENTO: LA PRIORIDAD DE VIDA Y FIDELIDAD
En el Antiguo Testamento vemos diferentes tipos de familias. Me enfocaré en tres mujeres muy distintas: Tamar, Esther, y
Ruth. Descubrimos que en el Antiguo Testamento las familias aparecen en diferentes tamaños y modelos. Vemos que estas
mujeres con frecuencia tienen que enfrentar situaciones inusuales. Aplicando los valores de la vida y fidelidad a situaciones
inusuales podemos aprender lo que significa el discipulado. Ruth, Tamar, y Esther nos muestran la prioridad de lo que es
sobrevivir en el Antiguo Testamento.
Padre Garrett Galvin, OFM, es egresado de la Universidad de California, Irvine e ingresó con los Frailes Franciscanos en el año
1992. Inició su carrera como profesor en la Franciscan School of Theology en el 2009 la cual se mudó a la ciudad de Oceanside y se
afilió con la Universidad de San Diego en el 2013. Ha publicado su primer libro, Egypt as a Place of Refuge (Mohr Siebeck), y ha
comenzado a trabajar en su siguiente libro, David’s Successors: Kingship in the Hebrew Bible (Liturgical Press).

La familia tiene la misión de ser la familia de Dios. Del pueblo de Dios. En el Nuevo Testamento no encontramos recetas para
la familia de hoy. Encontramos la vida de Jesús y de los primeros cristianos. La Primera Carta de Pedro al pueblo de Dios que
viviendo en tierra extraña tiene el llamado de ser fiel al evangelio y fiel a las exigencias de su tiempo. ¿Es posible esa doble
fidelidad? ¿Cuál es el mensaje central de esta carta y qué podemos aprender hoy? ¿Cómo podemos dar razón de nuestra
esperanza cristiana hoy como familia y comunidad de fe? Será de mucha ayuda si lee esta Carta antes de nuestro taller.
Feliciano Tapia tiene estudios de filosofía y teología. Ha sido maestro y sobre todo alumno que busca comprender más el sentido de
la vida (familia, padres, hijos, trabajo, ministerio, etc.) frente a la invitación de Jesús hoy. Familia de rancho, de pueblo, migrante y
de ciudad es su experiencia personal y de fondo en sus clases, entrenamiento y retiros de una nueva espiritualidad cristiana para
laicos. Escribe reflexiones bíblicas (Palabra de Dios) con Liturgy Training Publications y representa a la editorial y ministerio jesuita

Muchos niños y adolescentes ya no vienen de familias nucleares tradicionales, sino de familias monoparentales u
homoparentales y familias ensambladas. Este hecho es un reto para catequistas y maestros, y requiere sensibilidad, tacto y
delicadeza. El taller propone ideas sobre "cómo actuar" en estas situaciones.

Nuestro Santo Padre nos ha invitado este año a cuidar de nuestra casa en común, ¿pero qué quiere decir con eso? Los
invitamos a un diálogo y/o discusión sobre nuestra ecología interna, externa e integral. Vengan a ser desafiados e
invitados a tomar pasos prácticos con sus ministerios y en sus vidas para verdaderamente “alabar al Señor” con
nuestros pensamientos, palabras y acciones. Y ahora a armar, amar y cuidar de nuestra casa en común.
Armando M. Cervantes se graduó con un Bachillerato en Ciencias Sociales con un énfasis en Servicio Comunitario y Público de la
Universidad de California en Irvine. También cuenta con una Maestría en Teología Pastoral de la Universidad de Loyola
Marymount en Los Angeles. Y se acaba de recibir con una Maestría en Administración de Empresas. Tiene más de 14 años de
experiencia profesional sirviendo en varios ministerios y ayudando a católicos de todas las edades. Actualmente es el Director de
Youth & Young Adult Ministry para la Diócesis de Orange y es parte de comités a nivel regional (RECOSS) y también es parte de las
dos organizaciones nacionales que trabajan con jóvenes en inglés y en español – NFCYM y La Red. .
Considerando los desafíos de la vida moderna, ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de apoyar a la familia? ¿Si la familia es central
tanto a la sociedad como a la Iglesia, cómo debemos expresar mejor la verdad de su importancia? El Documento
“Aparecida” presenta a la familia como “el patrimonio de la humanidad”. En este taller el Documento “Aparecida” será
el marco que nos ayudará a descubrir de nuevo esa realidad y a renovar nuestro entusiasmo de trabajar para ayudar a
la familia a que “asuma su identidad y su misión en la sociedad.”

católica y cómo desarrollar un método que permita a los catequistas unir los contenidos de la fe con la vida cotidiana
de nuestros catequizandos.

D-2613 COMUNICÁNDONOS CON LO SAGRADO: 10 IDEAS CREATIVAS USANDO
SÍMBOLOS DE LA RELIGIÓN POPULAR PARA LA CATEQUESIS
La catequesis nos da la oportunidad de utilizar modos creativos e interesantes para la formación en la fe.
Desafortunadamente, muchos catequistas solo hacen el uso de lo verbal y lingüístico para comunicar la fe. El lenguaje
de la catequesis debe de ser lleno de símbolos y creencias populares como los santos, La Virgen María, los rosarios, los
escapularios etc. En este taller, veremos cómo tomar nuestras creencias populares y utilizarlas efectivamente en la
catequesis. Ideas prácticas y manualidades serán compartidas para implementar en sus parroquias.
Victor Valenzuela es consultor bilingüe a nivel nacional de William H. Sadlier Inc. Por más de 20 años ha estado trabajando en el
ministerio hispano. Ha sido maestro de secundaria y ha colaborado en diversos ministerios parroquiales incluyendo pastoral juvenil
y educación religiosa. Terminó sus estudios superiores en el seminario St. Joseph en Mountain View, California y tiene dos años de
teología cursados en el seminario St. Patricks. También tiene su maestría en educación religiosa de la Universidad de San Francisco.

NUESTRAS COMUNIDADES.
Hoy en día, más que cualquier generación anterior, la comunidad de los
discípulos es una minoría en el mundo. En nuestro país es evidente que
la respuesta al llamado de Jesús es a la vez personal y exigente. Estamos
llamados a compartir en su trabajo, para ayudar a traer el Reino de Dios,
y traer reconciliación y paz a nuestras familias, comunidad en general,
sociedad, y mundo. Es en el reino de Dios donde el perdón y el amor se
hacen presentes. La comunidad de los discípulos de Jesús es la
comunidad de paz que trae paz, construye paz, y comparte paz a través
del perdón. Esta comunidad comienza con la paz personal con nosotros
mismos y familias y se proyecta hacia nuestros alrededores.

D-2615 PAPA FRANCISCO: NUEVO MODELO DE IGLESIA
"Nadie puede servir a dos amos. Pues aborrecerá a uno y amará al otro, o se apegará a uno y despreciará al otro. No se puede
servir a Dios y a las riquezas" (Lc.16,13) El Papa Francisco ha invitado con su ejemplo de vida (desde mucho antes de su
pontificado) y con sus palabras a vivir y construir "una Iglesia pobre y para los pobres." ¿Qué significa esto? ¿Cómo hacer de
esto una realidad? ¿Qué implicancias tiene esto en nuestras vidas y en nuestra tarea evangelizadora? Ven a este taller a
descubrir modos concretos de vivir con simplicidad y en solidaridad con los demás. Juntos impulsaremos una nueva
evangelización profundamente enraizada en el evangelio.

D-2616 LA FAMILIA: LA CUNA DEL DISCIPULADO
Lumen Gentium dice "los padres han de ser para con sus hijos los primeros predicadores de la fe, tanto con su palabra
como con su ejemplo, y han de fomentar la vocación propia de cada uno…" En este taller exploraremos modos y
maneras de cómo, a través de nuestro ejemplo y testimonio, podemos hacer de nuestros hijos discípulos conforme al
corazón de Dios.
Carlos Obando obtuvo una Maestría en Teología Pastoral de la Universidad de Loyola Marymount (2009). Ha sido director
espiritual durante 20 años y ha trabajado con la comunidad Hispana en el Sur de California desde 1979. Actualmente es profesor de
la Escuela de Formación en la Renovación Carismática, Instituto para el Ministerio Pastoral en la Diócesis de Orange, y también es
profesor en el Centro para la Religión y la Espiritualidad de la Universidad Loyola Marymount.

Cuando hablamos del Sensus Fidelium… ¿Qué significa?
¿Cómo se reconoce la fé del pueblo? En este taller, vamos a
descubrir como “lo cotidiano” sirve como una fuente
teológica. Accediendo la experiencia de fé, es posible
percibir donde Dios nos está guiando. Específicamente,
que es la religión popular y cómo la fé se practica en
comunidades Católicas. Esta sesión explorará cómo Dios se
revela y está presente en la vida cotidiana.
Lauren Frances Guerra es nativa de Los Angeles, California. Su
familia es del Ecuador y Guatemala. Muy activa en la Iglesia
Católica, el estudio de Teología combina toda las cosas más
importantes para ella: fé, cultura, y justicia social. Su meta es
servir como una portavoz para la comunidad Latina por medio
de su trabajo teológico.
D-2618 EL ACOMPAÑAMIENTO PASTORAL, UNA DIMENSIÓN IMPRESCINDIBLE DE LA
NUEVA EVANGELIZACIÓN
El Papa Francisco desde su propia experiencia Pastoral, identificado totalmente con el Documento de Aparecida nos
invita, en la Evangelii Gaudium, a profundizar en lo que significa el acompañamiento en el crecimiento de la fe de
aquellos que han abierto su corazón al Evangelio; en este taller intentaremos ver cómo hemos de acoger esa invitación
del Papa.

La Buena Nueva de Jesucristo nos llama a conocer y amar a las personas cara a cara. En la cultura de los Estados
Unidos hay una tentación para cristianos a acercarnos a las cuestiones de “pro-vida” o “justicia social” por los lentes
partidistas o políticos. Por el contrario, este taller examinará lo que significa ser la Iglesia. Es decir, como el Cuerpo de
Cristo, que ha recibido el don del amor y bienvenidos radical en Cristo, ¿qué clase de pueblo necesitamos ser para ser
capaz de ofrecer la hospitalidad radical a los demás, especialmente a los más vulnerables de nuestras hermanas y
hermanos? Papa Francisco identifica estos como los pobres, los discapacitados, los no nacidos y los enfermos, los
migrantes y los refugiados, los ancianos y los jóvenes que no tienen empleo.
Dr. Greg Walgenbach es Director de la oficina de Respeto a la Vida, Justicia y Paz de la Diócesis de Orange. Anteriormente fue
director parroquial de pastoral juvenil y confirmación. Es un converso a la fe católica, se crió en la iglesia Bautista y sirvió como
pastor bautista y sacerdote anglicano antes de entrar en la Iglesia Católica, con su esposa y cuatro hijos. Greg tiene una Maestría en
divinidad y doctorado en Filosofía, Teología y Ética, del Seminario Teológico Fuller en Pasadena.
