En tiempo de Josías, el Señor me dirigió estas palabras: “Desde antes
de formarte en el seno materno, te conozco; desde antes de que nacieras, te consagré como profeta para las naciones. Cíñete y prepárate; ponte en pie y diles lo que yo te mando. No temas, no titubees
delante de ellos, para que yo no te quebrante. Mira: hoy te hago ciudad fortificada, columna de hierro y muralla de bronce, frente a toda
esta tierra, así se trate de los reyes de Judá, como de sus jefes, de
sus sacerdotes o de la gente del campo. Te harán la guerra, pero no
podrán contigo, porque yo estoy a tu lado para salvarte”.

Segunda Lectura: 1 Corintios 12: 31-13: 13
Hermanos: Aspiren a los dones de Dios más excelentes. Voy a mostrarles el camino mejor de todos. Aunque yo hablara las lenguas de
los hombres y de los ángeles, si no tengo amor, no soy más que una
campana que resuena o unos platillos que aturden. Aunque yo tuviera
el don de profecía y penetrara todos los misterios, aunque yo poseyera en grado sublime el don de ciencia y mi fe fuera tan grande como
para cambiar de sitio las montañas, si no tengo amor, nada soy. Aunque yo repartiera en limosnas todos mis bienes y aunque me dejara
quemar vivo, si no tengo amor, de nada me sirve. El amor es comprensivo, el amor es servicial y no tiene envidia; el amor no es presumido ni se envanece; no es grosero ni egoísta; no se irrita ni guarda
rencor; no se alegra con la injusticia, sino que goza con la verdad. El
amor disculpa sin límites, confía sin límites, espera sin límites, soporta
sin límites. El amor dura por siempre; en cambio, el don de profecía
se acabará; el don de lenguas desaparecerá y el don de ciencia dejará de existir, porque nuestros dones de ciencia y de profecía son imperfectos. Pero cuando llegue la consumación, todo lo imperfecto
desaparecerá. Cuando yo era niño, hablaba como niño, sentía como
niño y pensaba como niño; pero cuando llegué a ser hombre, hice a
un lado las cosas de niño. Ahora vemos como en un espejo y oscuramente, pero después será cara a cara. Ahora sólo conozco de una
manera imperfecta, pero entonces conoceré a Dios como él me conoce a mí. Ahora tenemos estas tres virtudes: la fe, la esperanza y el
amor; pero el amor es la mayor de las tres.

El Señor me ha enviado para anunciar a los pobres la buena nueva y
proclamar la liberación a los cautivos.

Evangelio: Lucas 4: 21-30
En aquel tiempo, después de que Jesús leyó en la sinagoga un pasaje
del libro de Isaías, dijo: “Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de la
Escritura que acaban de oír”. Todos le daban su aprobación y admiraban la sabiduría de las palabras que salían de sus labios, y se preguntaban: “¿No es éste el hijo de José?” Jesús les dijo: “Seguramente me
dirán aquel refrán: ‘Médico, cúrate a ti mismo’ y haz aquí, en tu propia
tierra, todos esos prodigios que hemos oído que has hecho en Cafarnaúm”. Y añadió: “Yo les aseguro que nadie es profeta en su tierra.
Había ciertamente en Israel muchas viudas en los tiempos de Elías,
cuando faltó la lluvia durante tres años y medio, y hubo un hambre
terrible en todo el país; sin embargo, a ninguna de ellas fue enviado
Elías, sino a una viuda que vivía en Sarepta, ciudad de Sidón. Había
muchos leprosos en Israel, en tiempos del profeta Eliseo; sin embargo, ninguno de ellos fue curado, sino Naamán, que era de Siria”. Al oír
esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga se llenaron de ira, y levantándose, lo sacaron de la ciudad y lo llevaron hasta una saliente del
monte, sobre el que estaba construida la ciudad, para despeñarlo.
Pero él, pasando por en medio de ellos, se alejó de allí.

womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to

have made you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of brass, against
the whole land: against Judah’s kings and princes, against its priests
and people. They will fight against you but not prevail over you, for I

Brothers and sisters: Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I
shall show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in human and
angelic tongues, but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a
clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend
all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I
own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not have
love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is
not pompous, It is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own
interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does
not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all
things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love
never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if
tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For
we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect
comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk as
a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put
aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but
then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as
I am fully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the
greatest of these is love.

will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here
in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’” And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his
own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel
in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half
years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none
of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the
land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time
of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only
Naaman the Syrian.” When the people in the synagogue heard this,
they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town,
and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built,
to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of
them and went away.

REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION
CONSTRUYENDO UNA
VERDADERA COMUNIDAD
Es normal sentir inseguridad ante un trabajo nuevo, algo
que se comienza y no se está muy seguro de poder sacar
adelante. Sentimos que quizá haya personas que podrían
hacer ese trabajo mucho mejor. Tememos al fracaso y muchas veces con razón. el fracaso no es algo agradable y
nos deja con un sentimiento de inferioridad, de baja autoestima. el estar preparado para un trabajo o una tarea es
importante, y muchas veces sentimos la urgencia
de prepararnos y poner de nuestra parte todo lo
que podemos para hacer las cosas bien. eso
está muy bien, siempre que no perdamos de
vista la acción de Dios en nuestras vidas.
A veces, las cosas que se nos encargan nos parecen superiores a nosotros mismos y, sin embargo, sabemos que las tenemos que hacer, porque son para el bien de otras muchas personas,
de nuestras familias o de la gente de nuestra comunidad
parroquial. Por amor, nos lanzamos a hacer incluso lo que
nos parece que nos queda demasiado grande; pero,
cuando miramos a los relatos de llamadas de Dios, nos
sorprende ver que, la mayoría de las veces, Dios elige a
personas aparentemente insignificantes y con pocas calificaciones para la misión que les encarga.
Lo que Dios trata de hacer ver es que el que se realice su
misión en el mundo depende de la disposición de la persona, no tanto de sus calificaciones para el cargo. Depende de la obediencia, disponibilidad y amor con que se le
responda a Dios; y, fundamentalmente, de la promesa de
Dios, de estar siempre con el enviado, el elegido.
BUILDING A TRUE COMMUNITY
It is normal to feel personally insecure when going into a
new job, starting something new, and not being sure of our
ability to move it forward. We probably feel that there are
others who could do a much better job. We are afraid of
failure and many times with reason. Failure is not pleasant
and leaves us feeling inferior with low self esteem. To be
prepared for a job or a task is important and many times
we feel the sense of urgency to prepare and do everything on our part to do things the right way. This is
good as long as we don’t lose sight of God’s
action in our lives.
Sometimes, the things we are asked to do may
seem superior to ourselves and yet we know that
we have to do it for the wellbeing of others, our
families or the people in our parochial community. For love we even take on things that may
seem too big for us. Yet, when we look at the
accounts of God’s call we are surprised to see
that in the majority of the times, God picks people that
appear to be insignificant and with poor qualifications to
carry out the mission he has given them.
Without any doubt, they had to have been better options
and surely he knew it. What God is trying to see is that
those who realize his mission in this world depends on their
disposition and not so much on their qualifications for the
job. It relies on obedience, availability and love with which
they respond to God; and it depends, fundamentally, on
the promise of God. God’s promise is to always be with the
one who was sent, the chosen one.
A veces no animamos a nuestros hijos a responder a la
llamada de Dios por múltiples razones: miedo a que no
sean felices, temor de que nos dejen sin nietos o viajen a
otro lugar, miedo de que no puedan con la responsabilidad que se les encargue. Nos convendría entonces recordar la promesa: No temas. Yo estaré contigo. Si es así, no
hay obstáculo ni excusa lo suficientemente fuerte como
para detener a la persona que se siente llamada por Dios.
Como Jeremías, puede expresar sus reservas; pero al in, lo
que vence es esa promesa.
There are times when we don’t encourage our children to
respond to God’s call for many reasons: fear that they
may not be happy; afraid they might leave us without
grandchildren or travel to another place far from us; or
fear that they might not be able to meet the responsibilities they are assigned. It suits us to remember the promise:
Have no fear. I will be with you. And if this is so, there is no
obstacle or excuse big enough to stop a person that has
felt the call of God. Like Jeremiah, he can express his reservations, but in the end, he will conquer all. That is the
promise.
Para la reflexión
¿A qué te sientes llamado por Dios? ¿Te parece que no
eres lo suficientemente capaz para esa llamada? ¿Qué
piensas que necesitas? ¿Es algo que puedas lograr tú mismo preparándote y formándote? ¿Es algo que depende
mucho más de Dios que de tu esfuerzo? ¿Le temes mucho
al fracaso? ¿Qué riesgos estás dispuesto a tomar por seguir el camino al que Dios te llama?
For Reflection
Where do you feel God is calling? Do you consider yourself
incapable of taking on the call? What do you think you
need? Is it something you can achieve by preparing yourself and through formation? Is it something that depends
much more on God than your own efforts? Are you afraid
of failure? What risks are you willing to assume in order
to follow the path God is calling you toward?

others. A beautiful way to answer his call is to be aware of
and address the particular needs of those who suffer from
abortion. Offer your attentive listening and non-judgmental
attitude to someone you know who is suffering after abortion.

YOU AND THE PRESENTATION
El 2 de febrero es un día muy especial para nosotros ya que celebramos la Presentación de Jesús en el templo. Sí, es una Hermosa conmemoración; pero, ¿sabía que esta fiesta se trata de usted? Jesucristo es la Cabeza de la Iglesia y nosotros somos el Cuerpo. Juntos creamos una hermosa expresión del Reino de Dios entre nosotros; pero
esto no es tan fácil como parece. Los que siguen a Cristo deben emularlo: debemos ser como él con la gente a nuestro alrededor. Nuestras vidas deben reflejar la vida de Cristo y esta tarea es difícil; pero,
no se entristezcan… Dios siempre equipa a los que llama.
February 2 is a very special day for us; we celebrate the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. Yes, it is such a beautiful commemoration, but did you know that it is all about you? Jesus Christ is the
head of the Church and we are the Body. Together we create a
beautiful expression of the Kingdom of God among us; but this is
not as easy as it seems. Those who follow Christ must emulate him:
we must be like him with the people around us. Our lives must reflect the life of Christ and this is not an easy task; but don’t be sad…
God always equips those he calls.
Hoy recordamos que Jesús fue presentado en el templo. En algunos
países latinoamericanos hay la costumbre de celebrar este evento
presentando en la misa a los hijos cuando cumplen 3 años. La cultura
de la gente habla a voz en grito sobre la espiritualidad que la alienta;
y la espiritualidad es una de las más maravillosas llaves
que Dios nos ha dado libremente, para poder abrir vidas
auténticas. En pocas palabras, ¡la Presentación del Señor
es un llamado a recordar nuestra vocación!
Today we remember that Jesus was presented in the temple. In
some Latin American countries, there is the custom of presenting
the children in the Mass when they are 3 years old, to celebrate this
event. The culture of the people speaks loudly about the spirituality
that encourages it; and spirituality is one of the most
wonderful keys that God has given us to open up authentic lives. In a few words, the Presentation of the
Lord is a call to remember our vocation!
Todos tenemos una vocación, un llamado a ser nosotros
mismos, ser felices y darnos cuenta de que somos la más
preciosa obra de arte de Dios. Esta vocación se manifiesta
por medio de nuestros talentos y las cosas que dan sentido a nuestra vida. No somos una casualidad de la vida;
somos queridos y amados por Dios; y nosotros también
fuimos presentados a Dios el día de nuestro bautismo.
We all have a vocation, a call to be ourselves, to be happy, and to realize that we are God’s most precious work
of art. This vocation is expressed through our talents
and the things that give meaning to our lives. We are not
an accident of life; we are wanted and loved by God; and
we were also presented to God the day of our baptism.
¿Recuerdan su bautismo? Lo más probable, como me paso a mí, es
que fueron bautizados de chiquitos y no lo recuerdan. Aun así, el
significado de nuestro bautismo es vasto. En el Bautismo fuimos consagrados a Dios. En el Bautismo, como lo dice San Pablo, se nos da
como regalo todo lo que le pertenece a Cristo por derecho. En el
Bautismo ya no somos desolados ni abandonados sino que nos convertimos en amados por Dios y la Iglesia. Por el Bautismo tenemos el
derecho de opinar cuando la Iglesia comete errores o no es fiel a su
misión. En el Bautismo nos convertimos plenamente en el Cuerpo de
Cristo conectado a su Cabeza.
Do you remember your baptism? Most likely you, just like me, were
baptized as an infant and may have no memory of the event. Even
so, the meaning of our baptism is vast. In Baptism we were consecrated to God. In Baptism, as St. Paul says, we are given as a gift
everything that belongs to Christ by right. In Baptism we are no
longer desolate or abandoned but we became loved by God and the
Church. By Baptism we have the right to speak up when the Church
makes mistakes or is not faithful to its mission. In Baptism we become fully into the Body of Christ connected to his Head.
El 2 de febrero, mientras prenda las velas, le bendigan la garganta y
coma deliciosos tamales y otros platos tradicionales, busque un tiempito para pensar sobre la gracia, inmensurablemente plena, que ha
recibido gratuitamente de Dios. ¡La Presentación del Señor en el templo se trata de usted! Pero no se puede encender una vela y esconderla. Ayuden a otros a recordar esta verdad; eso es lo que hizo Cristo; ¡él lo dio todo!
On February 2, as you light candles, have your throat blessed, and
eat delicious tamales and other traditional dishes, make some time
to think about the immeasurably amazing grace you have freely
received from God. The Presentation of the Lord in the temple is
about you! But you can’t light a candle and hide it. Help others to
remember this truth; that is what Christ did; he gave it all!
