ear friends in Sacred Heart:
We are at the end of this Christmas Season and as I mentioned in one of my homilies,
this 2016 is taking us really fast through the Feasts and Solemnities… we have celebrated
really soon the Epiphany of the Lord and today we are celebrating the Theophany of the
Lord. This name is used when we can read how the three Devine persons of the Holy
Trinity are revealed in the Gospel today.
I share with you a little information of the Solemnity we celebrate:
“The Baptism of the Lord has historically been associated with the celebration of Epiphany because
even today, the Eastern Christian feast of Theophany, celebrated on January 6 as a counterpart to the
Western feast of Epiphany, focuses primarily on the Baptism of the Lord as the revelation of God to
man.
After the Nativity of Christ (Christmas) was separated out from Epiphany, the Church in the West
continued the process and dedicated a celebration to each of the major epiphanies (revelations) or theophanies (the revelation of God to man): the Birth of Christ at Christmas, which revealed Christ to
Israel; the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles, in the visit of the Wise Men at Epiphany; the Baptism of
the Lord, which revealed the Trinity; and the miracle at the wedding at Cana, which revealed Christ's
transformation of the world.
Thus, the Baptism of the Lord began to be celebrated on the octave (eighth day) of Epiphany, with
the miracle at Cana celebrated on the Sunday after that. In the current liturgical calendar, the Baptism
of the Lord is celebrated on the Sunday after January 6, and, a week later, on the Second Sunday of
Ordinary Time, we hear the Gospel of the Wedding at Cana”.
What a great time to meditate about the presence of God and the consecration to God we have received in
our Baptism. This is bringing us new hope, and reminds us of the call we have received for holiness.
Peace to all,
Fr. Francisco Ortega

MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT…
The Christmas season closes this Sunday
with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of
them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his
birth, and now at his baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the
scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the
Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth,
while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism
of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus.
And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy
Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also,
through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6).

men of light, we need to explore our shadow side - that

seek to be free & authentic men in the image of Christ.

The Response of the Gospel of Mercy
“The rigorous screening process (of Syrian refugees) is
conducted over 18-24 months by refugee and security
professionals through multiple interviews and multiple
security checks. The US has always been a haven for the
world’s refugees and the Catholic Church plays a large
role in that welcome.”

The Spirit of Christmas
Many thanks to all our parishioners who donated toys
or games or books for the children at Stroger Hospital.
“Santa” had presents for all of them. Their prayers were
answered because of the generosity of our Sacred Heart
Family. The donations for Little Brothers, Friends of the
Elderly exceeded past years, also. The volunteers are
amazed at the number of donations we receive. From the
prayer of St. Francis, “it is in giving that we receive”.
Isn’t that the true Spirit of Christmas!
I want to add my own thanks. I’m proud of our Sacred
Heart Family and so happy to be a part of it. I’m looking
ahead to Christmas in 2016.
Jeanne Flyke
P.S. Thank you to Jeanne & Danny Flyke for your dedication & work in bringing joy to many children. God Bless!

_____ ________ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO___ _________
Dear Priests and Deacons:
My Christmas card this year was chosen to highlight that the Holy Family shared so much in common with refugee families throughout the world. That connection is brought home to us once again, as
the Feast of Epiphany marks the beginning of the celebration in the United States of National Migration Week, January 3-10, 2016. For the 30th anniversary of this celebration, Pope Francis has chosen
the theme “Migrants and Refugees Challenge Us: The Response of the Gospel of Mercy.”
Office of the Archbishop
As he notes in the letter he issued for this year’s celebration, all migrants are “our brothers and
sisters in search of a better life, far away from poverty, hunger, exploitation and the unjust distribution
of the planet's resources, which are meant to be equitably shared by all.” They are seeking the same thing everyone
seeks, he writes, “a better, more decent and prosperous life to share with our loved ones… indifference and silence lead
to complicity whenever we stand by as people are dying of suffocation, starvation, violence and shipwreck.”
“Today, more than in the past,” Pope Francis observes, “the Gospel of mercy troubles our consciences, prevents us
from taking the suffering of others for granted, and points out a way of responding” with practical works of spiritual and
corporal mercy.
During National Migration Week, Catholics are called to participate through prayer and action to try and ease the
struggles of immigrants and to reflect on the Church’s obligation to welcome the stranger.
Throughout the month of January, I encourage you to use these related resources provided by the Archdiocesan Office for Immigrant Affairs, the Priests for Justice for Immigrants, and the USCCB Justice for Immigrants Office.

santidad.
Paz para todos,
Fr. Francisco Ortega, Administrador
