Weekly Message
Dear parishioners,
Last Sunday we began a five-week series of the Letter of St. James in our second reading. The Letter of
St. James is one of the few controversial books in the New Testament. There is no agreement among
scholars regarding who wrote this letter. Some think it was written by the Apostle James himself while
others think it was by his disciple. Even after its acceptance into the canon of the New Testament, the
Letter of St. James was spoken of with certain reserve and suspicion. Martin Luther in the sixteenth
century almost threw the letter out of his bible. His position was that the letter prided work above faith
in contradiction to St. Paul. Luther also argued that the letter made little or no reference to Jesus
Christ and his resurrection which is key to the Christian faith. The letter of St. James was written to a Judeo-Christian
community who knew the Law and had come to believe in Christ. James enjoined them not to just take pride in the
Law but rather to live it out. His letter speaks of the practical nature of our Christian faith.
In today’s reading, James has this to say: “My brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our
glorious Lord Jesus Christ” (James 2:1) He criticized the attitude which presumes that the well-dressed person deserves more respect than the poor and shabbily dressed person in the house of God. For James, if we are to make any
preference, it must be for the poor. In his sermon in the synagogue, Jesus says: “He has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). There are times when we find ourselves falling into the sin that St. James condemned
today. The church ought to be a place where there are no distinctions based on status and race. The cultural milieu of
the early Christian society was highly stratified. Initially, it was not a problem since most of the early converts were
poor, but as some rich people became converts, there was the temptation to treat them differently as special trophies
for Christ. The Letter of James spoke against such a distinction because we are all equal before God.
Jesus did not allow racial barriers or personality status to stop him from doing good works. In today’s gospel, he
healed a Gentile man of his speech impediment. The people acknowledged this extraordinary work of Christ by saying,
“He has done all things well.” The love of Jesus is available to everyone without any presuppositions or any conditions.
The argument of Martin Luther that St. James did not speak much of Christ and his mission does not have much substance. St. James draws the Christian to the practical aspects of the faith. We cannot just listen or believe without acting on what we heard and believed. Today, he invites us to show no partiality, so let us heed his words and act on them.
On behalf of the Missionary Society of St. Paul, I thank all our parishioners for their amazing generosity to our missionary work. You were awesome last weekend with your contributions. Your response to the second collection showed
how you appreciate the work we do among you and what our missionaries are doing in Africa. You actually made Fr.
Emmanuel Akpaidem, M.S.P. a “rock star.” Thank you so much!
On another note, I want to thank all of our parishioners for your continued generosity to our parish. A fortnight ago,
the Finance Council presented to you a summary of last year’s financial statement and this year’s budget. One of my
responsibilities as your pastor is the care of the temporal goods and financial management of our parish. In my first
year in the parish, I have worked with a newly established Finance Council to help me in this great responsibility. I
thank them for their time and sacrifice. With your support, we have paid down the mortgage on the Education Building
of the parish, which is largely used by St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School. We were also able to pay off the cost of acquiring the former Baptist property which now houses St. Paul Center (our CCE building) and McGivney Hall. We have
caught up with the archdiocesan obligations of the parish. We are in the process of our Master Plan to respond to the
needs of our people. All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without you. Your continued generous
giving as stewards of God’s gifts is helping our parish to reach more people who need God’s love. There is a lot more to
be done. Our religious education program is expanding. We are offering more opportunities for faith formation and a
better relationship with God. Thank you for making these possible and for all you do. May God bless you!
—Fr. Felix
Prayer for Consecrated Persons
God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in
your Son’s Kingdom as sisters, brothers, religious priests, consecrated virgins, and hermits, as well as members of Secular Institutes.
Renew their knowledge and love of you, and send your Holy Spirit
to help them respond generously and courageously to your will.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Did not God choose those who are
poor in the world to be rich in
faith and heirs to the kingdom?
—James 2:5

Youth Ministry News
Looking for a few Catechists: Do you enjoy being Catholic? Want to share your faith with others? We are
looking for a few men and women (aged 21 - ??) to share their faith with our children and youth in the Faith Formation / CCE programs here at St. Mary Magdalene. There are many grades available, three separate sessions
throughout the week, and even 2-month “mini-mesters” if you can’t commit to a full 27-week class year! We will
offer three catechist trainings this week on Sunday, September 6th (3:00pm - 4:30pm), Tuesday, September 8th
(6:00pm - 7:30pm), and Wednesday, September 9th (6:00pm - 7:30pm) in our new St. Paul Center… there will also be three more next week {September 13th, 15, and 16th}. You don’t have to be a professional teacher - though
you are also welcome! - or have all the answers; if you love your faith and like kids, we need you! God’s already given you what you need. It’s time to respond and be a light in the darkness. The children of our parish are coming
to learn about the Catholic faith… Will you be there?
“Youth Nights”: There will be no high school event on Sunday, September 6th, due to the Labor Day weekend.
We are also canceling the middle school event on Thursday, September 10th, due to the Confirmation Team meeting. Both events will be back next week: high school “Sports Night” on Sunday, September 13th; middle school
“Movie Night” on Thursday, September 17th.
2016 Confirmation Team Meeting: We are looking for some adults, young adults, and confirmed high school
youth to serve on the Confirmation Team; this is the group that plans and implements the youth Confirmation
program here in the parish. Our first planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 10th at 7:00pm in St.
Mary’s Hall. Come be a part of this faith-growing and life-changing ministry!
“Festival of Ministries”: Our Faith Formation staff will participate in the upcoming “Festival of Ministries” on
Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th in the Family Life Center. If you have questions about our
catechetical, sacrament preparation, or Youth Ministry programs – or would like to learn how you can be involved
in them - please come by and say ‘hi.’ We’d love to tell you what we’re all about and how you can be a part of it!
New CCE Year / Late Registrations: Our 2015 – 2016 catechetical year will begin Sunday, September 20th /
Tuesday, September 22nd / Wednesday, September 23rd… Please refer to the calendars you received at the time of
registration for the dates of our Sunday, Tuesday, or Wednesday CCE classes. If you were unable to attend one of
our previous registration events, or simply have not yet registered your child(ren) for CCE / Formation classes,
please call or email the Formation Office for session / grade-level availability and dates you can come in to register. We will not accept walk-in registrations at the Formation Office… You will be given information to come
register in late September / early October. Please bring in one of your offering envelopes to confirm your parish
registration status; payment in full is expected at the time of registration - we accept cash and checks for tuition
fees. Our policy remains that if you need a full or partial scholarship to cover your child’s CCE tuition, all you
need to do is talk to Fr. Felix about your situation. No one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay for
CCE!
Text Message Reminders: We are pleased to offer text message reminders which can be sent straight to your cellphone / mobile device. Simply enter 81010 in the “To:” field, and send the following message to register for specific messages for our programs…

Faith Formation (CCE) & Sacramental Preparation Registration If you have not yet registered your child(ren) for CCE classes and sacrament preparation programs for the next catechetical year, please call or email the Formation Office as soon as possible. Although we are no
longer accepting new registrations for the first day of class, you can still register for the second week of classes… Please note that absences will accrue until your child arrives. There are no
“walk-up” registrations in the Formation Office… You must contact the office in order to receive a CCE authorization code.
2015 - 2016 ‘School-Year’ Catechists and Aides With the new school year approaching, we are getting ready
for our new catechetical year, which will begin on September 20th. We still need many catechists and assistants
to help staff the Formation classes. There will be three catechist trainings this week in the new St. Paul Center:
Sunday, September 6th (3:00pm - 4:30pm) ; Tuesday, September 8th (6:00pm - 7:30pm) ; and Wednesday,
September 9th (6:00pm - 7:30pm)… We will also have trainings next week on Sept. 13th, 15th, and 16th. You only
need to attend one training, and it does not have to be on the day you would like to teach! If you are interested
in sharing your faith with our elementary students (Kinder - 5th grade) or youth (6th - 12th grades), please contact Mike Smith in the Formation Office. Free training and support is provided; the dates of our trainings can be
found on the opposite page under the “Youth News” section!
First Communion Certificates If your child(ren) celebrated their First Communion in either May or June, please
stop by the Parish Office to pick-up their certificate. You need to ask for Diana Mendoza during regular business
hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm).

Especialmente para nuestra Comunidad Hispana
Queridos parroquianos:
glorificado, no tengan favoritismos” (Santiago 2:1).

¡FACIL!
