Epifania C.cdr - Our Lady of the Assumption

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church
The Epiphany of The Lord
January 3, 2016
DID YOU KNOW THAT ...
New Year's Day was formerly the feast of the
Circumcision of Our Lord, then it changed to the Holy
Name of Jesus, but now it is the Solemnity of Mary,
Mother of God. Regardless of the feast, this is a day of
hospitality for most people.

Baptisms and Baptism Preparation
Bautizos y Preparacion 909-882-2931
——————————
With the reading from Numbers proclaimed on
January 1 still ringing in my heart, I am reminded of
the blessings of the Lord, who looks kindly upon us
and gives us peace. Today's first reading from Isaiah
echoes the promises of protection, care, light, glory
and abundance that attend to those who are faithful.
The feast of the Epiphany has many facets - many
different ways of reflecting on "Epiphany" - which
means "revelation, a showing forth or manifestation".
So much more than its initial significance of the
visitation of the wise men (astrologers, perhaps) to
the Christ Child, this feast is also an occasion to
consider other manifestations of God in Scripture and
in our world. Although Matthew's Gospel is the only
one which recounts the story of the Magi, each
Gospel speaks of ways in which Jesus, throughout
his life, is manifested as the Messiah, the LongAwaited One.
This year, as we focus on the Gospel of Luke and the
Spirit of Mercy, we will continue to encounter stories
of Jesus as the Son of God, teacher, healer and the
One who reveals to us the depth of the love and
mercy of God the Father. A key aspect of this feast of
Epiphany is the proclamation that Christ is the light
of all nations, the Messiah come to redeem all
peoples and to offer salvation to all humankind. In its
document Lumen Gentium the Second Vatican
Council affirms that all people may find salvation in
the radiance of God's light. The prayer of the Church
today, in the Preface of the Mass, proclaims that
"Today you [God] revealed in Christ your eternal
plan of salvation and showed him as the light of all
peoples." We pray in our Eucharistic prayer at liturgy
that God gathers a people unto himself, from east to
west, to make a perfect offering to the glory of God's
name.
The proclamation of God's manifestation, epiphany,
is not just about ancient times, or only about
Christmas time. During this season, there are
instances where time and again we re-discover the
presence of God among us ("Emmanuel") whether in
our family or friendship circles or in our community.
It is our gift of faith that leads us to remember each
day of the year that God is with us, and that we are
called to be the manifestation of God's love and
mercy to all.
