FEAST OF FAITH:
Postures of the Mass
Envelopes
Loose
Total
In the Mass, we pray not only with our
lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand
when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is
a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the
judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also
an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the
Old Testament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a
listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus' feet to listen to his
teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to
hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that is full of
meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can
also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of
honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of
God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there
are other ritual gestures as well--striking the breast,
genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross.
The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person--with
heart and mind, voice and body.

Ministry to the Sick
St. Joan’s has a wonderful, caring team
of Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick
and Homebound. If you know of
someone who is ill or homebound, and cannot come
to Mass but would like to receive Holy Communion,
please call the Parish Office and we will organize a
visit with one of our ministers. If your friend or
relative would like to receive the Sacrament of the
Sick, please call Fr. Joseph at 310.479.5111 to
arrange for a mutually convenient time.
VIRTUS® Training
If you are a volunteer for any
organization in the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles, you are required to attend a VIRTUS® training and
be recertified every 4 years. The next training here at St. Joan
of Arc is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9th at 6:00pm.
Please call the parish office to sign up.
If you have already attended a VIRTUS® training, please
send a copy of your certificate (dated 2011 or newer) to the
parish office. Call Letty at the parish office if you have any
questions or concerns.
Book of the Dead
Those whose names are in our Book of the Names of the
Dead will be especially remembered at the Masses during

visite www.recongress.org.

SMALL CHRISTIAN

Scripture Readings for November 23, 2014
Christ the King
First Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-12,15-17
The Lord God proclaims that he himself will look after
and tend his sheep. He will tend them, rescue them
when they are scattered, pasture them, give them rest,
seek out the lost, and heal the sick. But he will judge
between one sheep and another and between rams and
goats.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15: 20-26, 28
Paul, addressing those Corinthians who denied the
resurrection of the dead, preaches about the relationship
between our resurrection from the dead and Christ’s. He
points out that, just as in Adam all die, so too will all who
belong to Christ be brought to life. Then Christ shall reign
until all his enemies are destroyed and the last enemy to
be destroyed will be death. Then Christ also will be
subjected to the Father.
Gospel: Matthew 25: 31-46
When Christ comes in glory, he will separate the sheep
from the goats. He will welcome the “sheep” to the
kingdom because they tended to him when he was
hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick and in prison.
“Whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine,
you did for me.” He will condemn the “goats” to eternal
fire because they did not tend to his brothers when they
were in need.

Whole Community
Catechesis
The theme for next Sunday’s Gospel is “Thy Kingdom
Come” The reflection questions for the week are:
Adults: How well do I understand the connecƟon between
praying “Thy kingdom come” and acƟng (“thy will
be done”) in a way that brings it about?
Kids: How carefully do I think about what I am saying
each day when I pray the Lord’s Prayer?

How can you engage more effectively in sharing God’s
love?
∗
The readings reveal Christ as Shepherd, King and
Judge. What is Christ most like to you?
∗
Christ, our Shepherd, is continually leading us to a
new way of living. Where has this journey taken you
this liturgical year? What has been easy? What has
been challenging? What graces has God given you
along the way?
∗
How will you love and serve God and one another this
week? For example, visit someone who is
homebound, bringing them food, laughter and
companionship. Pray for those in poor health and
those in prison.
Who are the “least” that you most often neglect?
When is it easiest for you to see the person of Christ in
others? When is it difficult?
Remember in your prayers all in
our parish who are sick, especially:
