ATTACKS ON GOD Anti-Christian graffiti attack Vandals carried out a graffiti attack on the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem last weekend. This church is the site where the Virgin Mary is said to have died, or fell into eternal sleep. AntiChristian statements such as “death to the heathen Christians, the enemies of Israel” were written in Hebrew on the doors and walls. Among the other statements painted on the abbey were “let his [Jesus’] name and memory be obliterated,” “Christians to hell,” and “the revenge of the children of Israel is on its way.” The perpetrators have not been identified but the graffiti suggests they were Jewish extremists who have been behind a number of recent attacks on Christian sites. Currently the Dormition Abbey is home to the German Benedictines. ASSEMBLY FOR LIFE Massachusetts Citizens for Life is sponsoring the Assembly for Life on Sunday, January 24 at Faneuil Hall from 2:00-4:00 p.m. sponsored by Massachusetts Citizens for Life. Eugene Rivers, Pastor of the Azusa Christian Community, Bishop Arthur Kennedy, Archdiocese of Boston, and Don Feder, Esq., media consultant and free-lance writer, as well as other speakers and music. Join us to celebrate life! WORDS FROM POPE FRANCIS… In a frail human being, each one of us is invited to recognize the face of the Lord, who in his human flesh experienced the indifference and solitude to which we so often condemn the poorest of the poor, whether in developing countries or in wealthy societies. Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth, experienced the world's rejection. . . And every elderly person, even if he is ill or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the “culture of waste” suggests! They cannot be thrown away! ON THE BULLETIN COVER The Four Gospels This mosaic at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna Italy depicts a an open cabinet with four books inside, labeled with the names of the Four Evangelists. The books are clearly the Four Gospels of the New Testament, and this is an important early depiction of them as a canonical set. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, The After School Program started up again this month after the Christmas break. It is great to have the children around the parish each day. They are spending a great deal of time learning how to practice the corporal and spiritual work of mercy. This month they have been focusing on feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, and praying for the living and the dead. They have been feeding the hungry by filling the bird feeders for our little friends who did not fly south for the winter. They have been praying for the living and the dead by praying the rosary each week with specific intentions for Fr. David’s medical mission in Uganda, the unborn, victims of abortion, and pregnant mothers who need support. They have been visiting the sick by making cards for the homebound, the sick and hospitalized, and one woman who died last week. The children are learning how to perform the works of mercy by learning everything they can about St. Francis of Assisi. They are studying his life and their cooking classes are devoted to learning how to cook food from his part of the world. I know that numerous parents struggle to pay the $10 daily fee that we ask for each child. Even though we emphasize that we have financial aid and do not turn any child away because of payment, some parents still do not want to send their children when they cannot pay. I respect this but would rather have more children come for as many days as possible. So in this Year of Mercy, we have decided not to charge anything for the rest of the year. The children can come each day from 3:00-600 p.m., receive a snack or small meal, be together with other children, play sports, learn skills and crafts, get help and time for their homework and reading ,and come to know and be with Jesus. Let us continue to pray for the children and the adults who give their time to them. – Father Michael NEW CATECHUMENS On Sunday, January 10, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Church received four children into the catechumenate. It was a beautiful ceremony where the other children in the Catechetical Program, their teachers, families and sponsors welcomed them as official candidates for initiation. They now have the Church as their mother as they prepare to have God become their Father through baptism. The catechumenate is the order for those who are preparing to be initiated into the Church. They are neither infants nor adults. Over the next year, they will continue to prepare and pray for their baptism, confirmation and reception of First Holy Communion. Their names are Andy, Daydry, Emily and Jefferson. They now join the children who became catechumens last January and are now on track to be baptized this Easter. Please pray for all of these children that they be blessed and guided to know, serve, and love the Lord. MASS INTENTIONS Masses intentions scheduled this week are listed below. Amen 3 Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 24 de Enero de 2016 SAINT CHARLES PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, Last Saturday we held the first 133 – 1000 Club drawing of the year. This month’s drawing included the 176 numbers of 1000 Club members who chose to transfer into the 133 Club. Many thanks for doing this. This will be a big help to both St. Charles, St. Mary’s, and the staff of the parish. I won’t go into the details of the minimal changes as they are explained in the letter that will be sent out to you in the next week. One change is that the possible amount of the total winnings is increased from $1000 to $2000 each month for the new members. Some of the newly transferred members won prizes this month. I also want to thank all of the people who have stopped being a member of the 1000 Club. I thank you for the past support. We are still receiving instructions from people but 35 of you have asked that the remaining subscriptions be donated to St. Charles. This money will go towards the purchase of a new Sacred Heart statue outside the Church to replace the damaged one. We will also be returning money to those who have requested it by the end of the month. If after reading the letter, you still have questions about your number please do not hesitate to contact us. Thanks for your continued support. – P.
