Prayer For/Oremos Por
To assist St. Augustine’s during the transition in administering to
the sick we are asking your cooperation when submitting names
for the Prayers of the Faithful and names to be added to the bulletin
listing of the sick. The office staff will be requesting some details such
as contact name, phone number, address, etc. This will help determine
the need for a clerical visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister
for the homebound. The bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped biweekly so that we all can be aware of those newly added to the listing.
The bulletin will maintain the listings for three months unless otherwise
specified to be listed indefinitely. After three months names can be
added once again if not otherwise listed as indefinite. We will begin
with the names presently included within the Prayers of the Faithful.
Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –
Marriage & Family
REFLECTION
3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
"So that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you
have received." St. Luke began his Gospel by explaining why he wrote
it. His intention was to provide a written account "of the events that
have been fulfilled among us." But he didn't write simply to make a
historical record; he wrote in order to bolster the confidence of the
Christian community. He wanted to offer them a resource for realizing
that what they had been taught was legitimate. This is why he investigated "everything accurately anew" and wrote it down "in an orderly sequence."
This passage helps us understand the relationship between
sacred tradition and sacred Scripture. As Catholics, we believe that the
Bible is an essential part of divine revelation that goes hand in hand with
the teachings that were established by Jesus and passed on by his apostles. The "Catechism of the Catholic Church" tells us that the church
"does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy
Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and
honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence" (#82). Here,
Luke emphasizes that what he writes is a confirmation of what was already being taught.
This fact should help us appreciate the gift of the Bible. This
inspired collection of books exists to help us practice our faith and to
bring us into a deeper understanding of the revealed word of God. Although the Bible is not the only source of revelation, it does help us to
have what Luke calls "certainty" regarding our faith. We do hear Bible
readings at Mass, but we would do well to read the Bible on our own as
well. Let us not miss the opportunity to hear God's word speaking to us
every day.

Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al)
The Church has an incredible treasure of graces at her disposal. Our membership of Communion of the Saints entitles us to call on this treasury of
graces. This is what the Church calls “Indulgences”. An indulgence can
be Plenary or Partial. A Partial Indulgence does not remit all the punishment for sin, but a Plenary Indulgence remits ALL the temporal punishment of sin. This means that if you were to die in a state of grace, having
obtained a plenary indulgence, and not sinned since obtaining the indulgence, you will go straight to Heaven.
Pope Francis has granted the faithful Plenary Indulgence for the occasion
of the Jubilee – Year of Mercy. The indulgence will be valid from the
opening of the Jubilee on December 8, 2015, until it ends on November
20, 2016.
To obtain Plenary Indulgence, a person must do the following while on
pilgrimage:
- Have the intention of gaining indulgence
- Receive the Sacrament of Penance
- Receive the Eucharist
- Pray six (6) of the following: Paters (Our Fathers), Aves
(Hail Mary’s), and Glorias (Glory Be’s) for the intentions of
the Holy Father
- Perform the prescribed action of Indulgence (ex: visiting the
stational churches of Rome, visit the Sacred Heart
Cathedral, etc.)
- Be free from all attachment of Sin
Actions to gain a Plenary Indulgence will be taken while you are on
pilgrimage, such as: Celebrating Mass daily, Making the Way of the
Cross, Public and Private recitation of the Rosary etc.

8 Tips on How to Pray Every Day By Dr. Taylor Marshall
Here are tips in no particular order:
Find a place in your home where you pray. Designate a space.
Find a time in the day when you pray. The prophets and the saints usually got
up early to pray. Set your alarm clock earlier (go to bed earlier) and wake up
to be with Christ in the morning.
Create a morning ritual that includes prayer. I recommend that it include
Scriptural reading, also. The Bible is how God usually talks to you. “God
never talks to me,” people often say. My response is, “Are you reading the
Bible?” God talks to you in Scripture.
Use a timer on your phone. Start at 5 minutes and work up to 30 minutes
daily.
Mental prayer is using your mind (“mental”) to speak to God. Tell him everything. Speak with your heart. Ask Him questions about your life. Ask Him
theology questions? Ask Him to do more than you expect. Don’t be afraid to
ask for insanely crazy requests. He likes to answer those best because they
prove that we didn’t accomplish it.
Keep a New Testament or spiritual reading book nearby. If you’re mind loses
track and wanders. Use this book to read a few sentences to focus again on
Christ or spiritual thoughts.
Use your daily time to fill yourself with positivity. The people that I know
that pray 30-60 minutes every day are very positive thinkers. Why? Because
they spend time with God and learn that all things are possible through
Christ. Faith and prayer build confidence and a “get it done” attitude. The
most pessimistic (and lazy) people are the people who do not pray or do not
spend time alone in silence. “Be still and know that I am God.”
Make daily prayer your identity. Repeatedly tell yourself: “I am a person who
talks to the Trinity every day. That is who I am and I always do it.” Become
what you are.
EveryWoman The Everywoman book group meets on the 2nd and 4th

Bedtime Prayers—Published by The Claretians, “At Home with Our Faith”
 Preschool to 2nd grade: This age group loves routine and repetition, and
bedtime is a wonderful opportunity to pass on treasured prayers. Hold hands
and say the Our Father, Hail Mary, and/or Glory Be.
 3rd to 6th grade: Independent readers can be encouraged to take a few
minutes before bed to read a chapter from a children’s Bible or a children’s
prayer book. Take the rosary from its velvet box and say a few beads together.
 7th to high school: Give adolescents a journal and encourage them to write
their prayers as letters to God. Find a teen devotional and help your child
remember to turn to it after a difficult day. When a heavy homework load
means you go to bed before your child, stop for a quick prayer on your way.
 All ages: No one’s too old to appreciate a good blessing. Trace a cross on
your child’s forehead and pray that God gives your child wisdom, strength,
and grace to be the best person he or she can be.
Reserve the dates!!! Vacation Bible School (VBS) is coming June 20th—
24th. Jesus will be gathering us together in the “Barnyard Roundup”. Contact Fran Kuzma in the office to help, ext. 1120.
EDGE/LIFETEEN
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN we discussed God as the source and author of
all Truth. The challenge given is to see how God created all things-both natural and supernatural—and to see how the moral teachings of the Church are
upheld in Scripture and the created world through natural law. By living our
lives in conformity to Truth, we can live in authentic freedom and continue
our growth in holiness. Our next EDGE/LIFETEEN session will be held on
Monday, January 25th, 2016. Topic: The Alpha and Omega: Victory in
Christ
INSTAN-TEEN-IOUS MESSENGING: We are launching a new approach
that lets us inform you instantaneously of program updates, reminders or
changes via text messaging. Here’s how it works: Text the message:
