Jesucristo, a quien el Padre envió al mundo es el sacramento de la benevolencia divina con los hombres. Dios es Amor. No se comporta con nosotros cuando le ofendemos como lo hacemos nosotros cuando alguien nos perjudica o nos desprecia. Dios es un Padre que no duda en entregar lo que más quiere: su Único Hijo “para que el mundo se salve por Él” (Evangelio). Si al sentirnos queridos por alguien la alegría esponja nuestro corazón y somos felices, ¿qué pensar si ese alguien es Dios, Bondad y Sabiduría infinita? Dios mantiene su oferta de vida y de salvación a pesar del historial de pecado que cada criatura humana tiene. Mirar a la Cruz como los israelitas en el desierto miraban la serpiente de bronce, símbolo de Ella, y quedaban curados de la mordedura del mal, es tropezarse con la prueba evidente del perdón de Dios y de su salvación prometida. Así es. Jesús murió en la Cruz por nuestros pecados y éste debe ser un motivo de consuelo cuando la conciencia, al recordarnos las ocasiones en que le hemos ofendido, abra paso a una inquietud mala. “¿Quién acusará a los elegidos de Dios? Dios es el que justifica. ¿Quién los condenará? ¿Cristo Jesús, que murió por ellos, más aún, que resucitó, que está a la derecha de Dios y que incluso intercede por nosotros?” (Rom 8, 34). La Iglesia invita al cristiano a alegrarse en la Cruz de Cristo porque de ahí brota “nuestra salvación, vida y resurrección” (Antífona Misa Exaltación Sta Cruz). ¡La Santa Cruz, ahí está el testimonio más elocuente y conmovedor del amor que Dios siente por el hombre! Este amor de Dios, inmenso y loco, que no se detiene ante la muerte, debe despertar en nosotros un afecto grande por Él que esté pronto a cualquier sacrificio personal. El sacrificio que todo amor comporta es la sal de esta vida. ¿No tenemos, a veces, la impresión de que nos quejamos demasiado, de que somos un poco melindres, poco sufridos? Una persona que a los 30 ó 40 años no haya tenido una contrariedad seria, ningún disgusto importante, corre el peligro de ser un eterno adolescente. El dolor madura a las personas, las hace más realistas, más humanas. Hay lugares donde los campesinos pinchan los higos para que estén más dulces. El cristianismo no inventó la cruz, no la trajo a un mundo hasta entonces feliz, sino que nos enseñó y nos ayuda a llevarla con esperanza. La opción no se plantea entre llevarla o no porque el dolor aparece tarde o temprano en nuestra vida, sino entre llevarla bien o mal. Ciertamente la Cruz a unas personas las encona contra Dios, como en el caso del mal ladrón. A otras, en cambio, les abre las puertas del Paraíso. El sufrimiento es el mismo. El modo de afrontarlo, no. No busquemos nunca a Cristo sin la Cruz, si no queremos tropezarnos con esas cruces sin Cristo, que no libran del dolor y que carecen del valor redentor que encierran. Así, el olvido de uno mismo para hacer la vida grata a los que conviven con nosotros, el esfuerzo diario para aportar con el trabajo nuestro grano de arena al bien común, las contrariedades e injusticias, el dolor físico o moral inevitables en esta vida, la lucha contra el pecado y el esfuerzo por influir cristianamente en la cultura y el comportamiento de nuestros iguales, lo afrontaremos con alegría, porque “allí donde se representa la muerte de Cristo, no puede reinar el pecado. Es tan grande la fuerza de la Cruz de Cristo que, si se pone ante los ojos..., ningún mal deseo, ninguna pasión ningún movimiento de enfado o envidia podrán prevalecer” (Orígenes, Com. in Rom, 6, 1). Pidamos a María, que estuvo junto a la Cruz de Jesús, que sepamos estar con reciedumbre cuando se haga presente en nuestra vida, y Jesús no olvidará esta muestra de solidaridad con Él cuando suene para nosotros el día grande de la Resurrección de toda carne.
