“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” – Exodus 20:4
How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and
feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the
form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot pride, power, ego, comfort or health.
Easter Donations
We invite parishioners to contribute towards Easter Flowers to help decorate
our church for this special season. Special Easter Flower Offering envelopes are
available for this purpose in the vestibules of our church. The Easter Sunday Collection is an
important part of our annual revenue. We do ask that all
parishioners make a special sacrifice and contribute generously to our Easter Sunday Collection. Please use the
envelope mailed to your home or pick up an Easter envelope in the vestibule of the church. Did you know you can
contribute to your church electronically? Even when
business travel or commitments take you away from
Somerville you can still make your weekly contributions.
Just go to our website and click on Faith Direct and follow
the prompts to register. Thanks for your prayerful consideration of your Easter gift to your church.

Immaculate Conception Church
Pro-Life Corner
Lent gives us the opportunity to consider why it is that we should be ProLife. To be Pro-Life is about loving
what is true and good - loving the
beauty of life itself. All that we do to
support Life is based upon our realization of God's profound love for us and the dignity of
each human life. Each human being comes into existence as a result of God's love and to give glory to
God. Each human life is created by God to communicate His love and glory. As the Catechism teaches,
"God has no other reason for creating than His love
and goodness." Each human being from the moment
of conception is made in the image and likeness of
God with a unique purpose. The Catechism states,
"Of all visible creatures only man is 'able to know and
love his creator.' He is 'the only creature on earth
that God has willed for its own sake,' and he alone is
called to share, by knowledge and love, in God's own
life. It was for this end that he was created, and this is
the fundamental reason for his dignity ... Being in the
image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone." Each human life, no matter its condition, is a
miracle, lovingly created by God and continuously
loved and willed to exist by Him. How could we ever
disrespect any life so loved by God? The child in the
womb, the young and not so young, the person with
special needs, the ill, etc., all are loved by God and
communicate to us God's love and glory. Each life
has a purpose and is a life worth living. It is for this
reason that we are Pro-Life. And it is out of love that
we confront the offenses against Life. If we wish to be
effective in protecting Life, we must be in awe of the
miracle of human life, recognize the dignity of each
person, and live in a way that witnesses the love of
Christ.

Chrism Mass
St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen
Monday, March 30th
at 7:30 PM
On Monday, March 30, 2015 Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski
will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the
Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils
which each parish receives for the rites of anointing.
Saint Ambrose [340-397] began this custom – which we
now call the Chrism Mass – in his Cathedral in Milan.
These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful,
have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of
Catechumens is used to anoint the chest of infants and
hands of adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is
used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is
used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar
and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make
a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to
God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask
the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are
strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled
Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in
Metuchen at 7:30 p.m.
Stations of the Cross

Catholic School Tuition Assistance
Once again, tuition assistance will be available
from the Diocese for families seeking financial aid for
the 2015-2016 school year. To receive a tuition grant,
an application must be filed through Private School Aid
Service (PSAS). Blank applications will be forwarded
directly from PSAS to each school in time for distribution to parents during Catholic Schools Week beginning January 26th. In addition to the hardcopy forms
available in both English & Spanish, a PDF version of
both forms, which can be downloaded and printed, will
be available on the diocesan website at
www.Tinyurl.com/DOM-TuitionAssistance. Please
take note: that only registered Catholic families with
children (K-12) in one of our diocesan or parochial
schools are eligible. Pre-K students are not. Parents/
Guardians MUST obtain approval and signature on the
forms from their pastor before submission to PSAS for
processing. Applications received at PSAS without a
Pastor’s signature are considered incomplete and
placed in a “hold” status which will jeopardize the applicants’ consideration for aid. The signature is by
one’s proper pastor not the pastor of the school. Applications received after the deadline will be returned
to the family unprocessed and will not be considered
for a grant award; and The DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION TO PSAS IS MARCH 31, 2015.
R.C.I.A.
Today, Sunday March 8, at the 10:30
AM Mass, our elect, Franklin Richardson celebrates the FIRST SCRUTINY. The scrutinies are among the
most ancient prayers in the Christian
liturgical tradition. As early as the
second century, Christian communities would help those who had been
chosen for Baptism to prepare for
their initiation by laying on hands and by prayers for protection and deliverance from evil.
In the near future, we will have their pictures and
Faith Journey Biographies posted on a bulletin board located
near the Cry room so you can read about their faith journey
and how God has touched their lives.
SPIRITUAL SPONSORS: Please remember to pray
for our elect/candidates as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Please share your support for the candidate/elect of your choice by sending them a
small note of encouragement. Write their name on the front of
the envelope c/o RCIA and deliver it to the Parish center or
place it in the collection basket anytime before Easter. You
the faith community is so essential to their journey. Please welcome them into the Body of Christ.

Immaculata High School
SOLAR SUITCASE PROJECT
In 2008 Dr. Laura Stachel went to Nigeria to
investigate the high rate of maternal mortalities
(1 in 23) and was astounded to discover that
energy deprivation-- no electricity-- was a MAJOR contributor. She
collaborated with her husband, a solar energy educator in Berkeley, Ca
and developed a solar suitcase to provide electricity to clinics and
schools which were energy poor. Immaculata engineering teacher Al
Kedersha saw a demonstration of the solar suitcase at the NJ Science
Convention. Solar suitcases could be purchased as kits from the We
Share Solar organization. Students would assemble the suitcases and
learn about electrical engineering and solar energy. The suitcases
would then be donated to schools, libraries, and orphanages in remote
areas that have no electricity.
The solar suitcase project exemplifies all four pillars of Immaculata: faith, scholarship, service, and friendship. Kedersha worked
with Campus Ministry co-director Maureen Cote in developing fundraising initiatives. The decision was made also to direct the IHS built suitcases to remote schools in the Philippines, most likely through the direction of St. Augustine Foundation in Coron Palawan. “As a fellow
Filipino, who has seen the poverty firsthand there, I am very proud to
be part of the class and project,” says Jeremy Bathan. To acquaint the
whole school with this project, the student body watched an inspiring
video from the wecaresolar.org website. One student remarked that "It
made the hair on my neck stand up. To think that we could significantly
improve people's lives through something IHS students build here is
amazing." The initial kit costs $1400 with subsequent cases costing
less. So in December and January, Immaculata fundraising efforts
included a dress down day, light bulb sale, direct appeals, $1 suitcase
cut-outs sold and displayed in a mural put together by the art department, the $10 "shares" in the project sold through Campus Ministry and
a Valentine sale through the French Honor Society. Students, parents,
and alumni participated in two fundraisers at the California Pizza Kitchen in the Bridgewater Commons Mall.
This month the construction of seven suitcases, which was
highly anticipated, began in Engineering class. “Waiting to start these
solar suitcases was like waiting to open presents on Christmas morning,” says Hannah Maffei. Before tackling the suitcases, the students
learned how solar energy is converted into electricity and the basic
components of a solar system and electrical circuits. Ready for the
assembly stage, the students carefully installed and wired the components together. After a thorough quality assurance check, the students
went outdoors on a sunny, but cold morning and hooked up a solar
panel. Cheers actually broke out when the diagnostic panel in the suitcase indicated that solar energy was being converted to electrical energy to charge the battery. Once charged, the battery was used to power
energy efficient LED lights and cell phone chargers. The project significantly impressed not just the class, but the whole school. Mark Dalessio said, “Can you imagine a school project having a lifelong impact on
teachers and students in another part of the world? And the fact that
the whole school rallied around us really made it special.” Julian Costas takes the thought one step further. “ Who knows what people will be
affected by our project and in turn, help others. The impact can be exponential and that is amazing.” Jack Benham summed it up saying,
“The story of the solar suitcase project is inspiring and the reach of
service to others is phenomenal. This may be the important thing I have
ever done in my life and I know that its influence will be felt, long after I
graduate.

House of Hope – Appalachia Mission 2015: Over the course of the past sixteen
summers, more than 400 students and chaperones
from Immaculate Conception have embarked on a
mission that has changed their lives. These individuals participated in the Wayne County Work Camp,
located in the poverty stricken Appalachian Mountains of West
Virginia. Please visit the Appalachia Mission ~ Houses of Hope
Display located near the Cry Room near the church entrance. You
can choose from tags specifying cash donations for a variety of
building supplies. Please place the tag, along with your donation,
in an envelope and return it in the collection basket or bring it to
the Parish Center (35 Mountain Ave - Monday - Friday, 9a.m. 5p.m.). Please make checks payable to Immaculate Conception
Church, Appalachia Fund. All donations should be returned by
3/30. For more info, please contact Jeanine Cavanagh at 7251112 x1126. The following is a testimonial from Immaculata student
Laura Cavanagh about her experience volunteering for Houses of
Hope and her trip to Appalachia WV. Rural, rugged, mountainous, old,
and beautiful—West Virginia is an amazing place. Twice a year, I
travel there to serve the people in the Appalachian mountains of West
Virginia on a mission to help repair and build homes and, at Christmastime to host a party that is, for many, their main Christmas celebration. Many people say that service changes their lives forever. However, service has forever been a part of my life. Years ago, my mother
helped begin these Appalachian missions through our church, and they
are something I have participated in for as long as I remember. It
breaks my heart every time I have to leave Appalachia, because I am
so connected with the area and all the people who live there. Two
years ago, before leaving our Christmas mission, a little girl, no older
than four, ran into my arms. I did not know her name, I did not know
her story, only that there was a need. She embraced me in a way that I
could feel the meaning and sincerity of her gratitude within her hug. I
felt her love. This was the moment I was most happy. Although West
Virginia—with all of its beauty and peace—is a place of contentment,
it is not the place itself that makes me most content. It is the connections and the love of the people we serve that brings me true contentment. I was able to see God working through me as I served, and I
saw God in the happiness and goodness service produces. As I have
grown in my faith, I have been able to find a deeper and more personal
relationship with God through service. My God is my rock. Without
Him I would be nothing and no one. As Paula Brownlee succinctly
expresses, “To do good things in the world, first you must know who
you are and what gives meaning to your life.” My undeniable faith has
become my identity. God gives meaning to my life, and service allows
me to fulfill my life’s mission. God is leading me down a path where I
can use my skills and gifts to affect the lives of the people around me
in a positive and profound way. I am here to help. I am most content
when I have done everything in my ability to improve a person’s life,
sometimes in small ways, and sometime in large ones. Giving is what
brings me joy. For as long as I can remember, I am most happy when I
am helping another person. Giving to others, making their days brighter, bringing hope, touching peoples lives: these are all things that make
me feel at peace and bring me true joy. I am constantly serving my
community in many ways through outreach. Doing good for others is
what I am passionate about. In addition, everyone wishes to be a hero
at one point in their lives, and service is one opportunity to be a hero to
someone in need. Service is an essential social responsibility, but because it is a core part of my faith, I believe that, for me, it is also a
matter of morality. I believe it is our moral responsibility to serve
those in need. This is why I love my experiences at Appalachia. All the
memories are priceless and so is the time I am given to serve the people I meet. I cherish every moment I spend at work camp because it
has forever molded me into the person I am today.

very flexible regarding the areas and the time involved.
Food Collection:
On the third Sunday
of each month non-perishable foods are collected at the entrances of the church. The
food is distributed to three agencies; the
Somerset Community Food Bank, FISH
emergency food and clothing pantry and the
Somerville Welfare Office. Over the last few months our
Parish Food Collection has decreased dramatically. We
rely on the generous hearts of this Parish Community to
help us to continue to fill our neighboring food pantries. It
truly is a simple way to help those in need. Please take
the time to fill one grocery bag with non-perishable items
for those who do not have the means to purchase one of
life’s basic needs ~ food. This ministry is crucial to living
the Gospel message that calls us to serve the hungry and
in some cases the homeless. Jesus spoke the word
clearly when he stated “When I was hungry did you feed
me? For what you do for the least of these you did for
me.” The next food collection is scheduled for next
weekend March 14th & 15th.

what do they have to do with us? If we consider that God is
the divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the
prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They
afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to
return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to
repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the
blessings of faithfulness. In The Prophets: Messengers of
God’s Mercy, Thomas Smith shows how their prophetic words
speak to us with the same urgency today. You will see how God
is constantly calling you to a deeper relationship with him and
discover the ways you are called to be the voice of God to others. Offered Wednesday evenings beginning March 4 at 7pm
for 10 weeks, led by Elizabeth Kuzio, Cost: $35.00. Check

Defense of Marriage, Family and Religious Liberty
A new book about Pope Francis “The Economy Kills’ not yet available in English and written by
Two Vaticanisti, Andrea Tornielli and Giacomo Galeazzi, demonstrate our Holy Father’s strong condemnation of gender
theory! Francis forcefully criticizes the gender theorists’ imposition of indoctrination that denies the natural differences between boys and girls and men and women, in exchange for development funds. Francis compares gender theory's rejection
of the essential role of sexual difference to that of linking personal and social identity to genetic manipulation, nuclear weapons, and to the tyrannical political programs against humanity of Herod, Hitler and Mussolini. He compares Gender Theorist’s forced indoctrination to these three tyrants who used power to deny nature and nature's law that requires universal
respect for our inherent human dignity. He states the”Herods" of every historical period destroy and "plot designs of death
that disfigure the face of man and woman, destroying creation." In contrast, respect for our divinely endowed human dignity
requires respect for the "design of the Creator ... written in nature". - See more at: - See more at: http://
