They are now in the period of Purification and Enlightenment. This is a period of intense spiritual preparation and interior reflection, intended to purify their minds and hearts. On Sunday, March 1, we celebrated the Penitential Rite for our candidates, Nancy Casebier, Liz Reese, and Blake Hite. This rite serves to mark the Lenten purification of “baptized but previously uncatechized” adults who are preparing to receive the sacraments of confirmation and eucharist. Today, March 8, we celebrate the First Scrutiny with our elect. The Scrutinies are celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. They are meant to “uncover then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in their hearts”. This is balanced with “strengthening all that is upright, strong and good”. These Rites are celebrated to deliver the elect from the power of sin and satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ. Please continue to hold our Elect and our Candidates in your prayers. The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the commandments, but neither were they helping people to find God’s path to freedom as they came to worship at the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly following a path to God’s freedom through Christ. From very early times, we have the sense of accompanying the elect on their journey to the font. From as long ago as the fourth century, we receive Lent as forty days to shake the dust from our spirituality and reorder our conduct. Then, fasting was not seen as a strict duty, yet it seems it was widely observed. Think of the rules of politeness and courtesy that everyone agrees on. Fasting was also seen as a social duty, since food was in short supply as winter wore on, and the weak and the sick had the first claim on what remained on hand. As a boost to the fasting of the body, the church developed a richer spiritual fare, including celebration of the Eucharist every day. This practice began in Rome by the sixth century. Weekday Mass was only at designated “stations.” The pope would arrive on horseback at the stational church. In those days, although the catechumenate was already in eclipse, there were pre baptismal activities at the stational Masses: the giving of the Lord’s Prayer, prayers for the godparents, and constant references to baptism. Collection information not included this week. Third Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015 Page 6 Letter from our Pastor—Pastoral Services Appeal 2 March 2015 Dear Friends in Christ, While we may consider ourselves only as a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church we are part of something much greater than any one parish or person. Our Church connects us all–as neighbors, as a community, as children of God and followers of Christ. I appreciate the good work accomplished through our parishioners’ dedication of their gifts of time, talent and treasure. From those who serve as liturgical ministers, to those devoted to faith formation, to those dedicated to outreach in the community, to those committed to hosting social and community activities, our parish is alive in the spirit. For 2015, our Diocesan PSA goal is $77,000 and our Parish goal is $100,000. As we approach July 1, 2015, the 10th Anniversary of the re-dedication of our church, it is a time for us to continue the upgrades and improvements for our facilities that we began last year. You may remember that last year we fixed the outside street lights, painted the exterior and interior of the rectory, upgraded the parking lot planters including water efficient irrigation, and replaced the carpet with laminate flooring in the meeting rooms. This year there are plans to paint the interior of the church, improve and install more energy efficient lighting throughout the facility and consider adding audio visual equipment in the church. I am confident that together we can reach this extraordinary goal. Think how much of an impact these funds can make, not only in our parish, but in the greater Catholic community as well. Your response to God’s generosity is of great consolation to me as your pastor, and I hope that I can count on your participation this year. I am inviting you to join me and your parish family in making your pledge. Your continued support is a great encouragement to me in my ministry here at St. Catherine of Siena as we continue the work Christ has called us to do. You and your family remain in my prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Reverend Kenneth A. Schmit Pastor St. Catherine of Siena Council of Catholic Women “LENTEN REFLECTIONS” with Fr. Laguna Beach Saint Catherine’s Class Act Family Night Concert Come listen to Pacific Symphony musicians as they perform on Saint Catherine’s stage Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Saint Catherine of Siena Parish School has been named a Frieda Belinfante Class Act school for the second year. The Frieda Belinfante Class Act Partnership is Pacific Symphony’s flagship youth education program. The program connects Pacific Symphony musicians to a select number of Orange County elementary schools each year. The Class Act Partnership further enhances our existing music and art programs by providing additional experience through the Symphony. Each year, students form a relationship with a new Symphony musician who serves as a “Class Act teaching artist,” through activities including assemblies, classroom lessons, a Family Night, and either an Interactive Performance for our Transitional Kindergarten to first grade students, or a Youth Concert at the Orange County Performing Arts Center for our older students. The League of American Orchestras and the National Endowment for the Arts has selected Class Act as one of the nine most exemplary music education programs in the United States. This is a FREE concert for the enƟre family and friends. The concert will highlight music by Leonard Bernstein and other composers, focusing on this year’s theme “sharing the joy of music”. Following the concert there will be light refreshments, corn beef and cabbage and a musician “meet and greet” session. “Nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado”.
