Welcome to our Parish
MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within
the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate
the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these
roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming
sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all
those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and,
by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

At Our Parish
The newly adult elect,
Sarah Boone, and our
youth elect, David
Franco, Harper Heil,
Hutton Heil, Logan
Heil, Tyler
Montgomery and
Margaret Zegowitz and
our candidates, Nancy
Casebier, Blake Hite,
and Elizabeth Reese
have progressed
through the Rite of
Sending and the Rite
of Election. They are
now in the period of
Purification and Enlightenment. This is a
period of intense spiritual preparation and
interior reflection, intended to purify their minds and hearts.
On Sunday, March 1, we celebrated the Penitential Rite for our
candidates, Nancy Casebier, Liz Reese, and Blake Hite. This rite
serves to mark the Lenten purification of “baptized but previously
uncatechized” adults who are preparing to receive the sacraments
of confirmation and eucharist.
Today, March 8, we celebrate the First Scrutiny with our elect.
The Scrutinies are celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays
of Lent. They are meant to “uncover then heal all that is weak,
defective, or sinful in their hearts”. This is balanced with
“strengthening all that is upright, strong and good”. These Rites
are celebrated to deliver the elect from the power of sin and satan,
to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in
Christ.
Please continue to hold our Elect and our Candidates in your
prayers.

THE PATH TO FREEDOM
Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the Ten Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would
likely get it wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten Commandments” is a post biblical, phrase that
developed along with an image of God as police officer that is not found in today’s passage from Exodus.
The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not explicitly
breaking any of the commandments, but neither were they helping people to find God’s path to freedom as
they came to worship at the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine our lives to see if
we are truly following a path to God’s freedom through Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Participating in Lent, we are engaging in patterns that have endured across the
centuries. From very early times, we have the sense of accompanying the elect on
their journey to the font. From as long ago as the fourth century, we receive Lent as
forty days to shake the dust from our spirituality and reorder our conduct. Then, fasting was not seen as a strict duty, yet it seems it was widely observed. Think of the
rules of politeness and courtesy that everyone agrees on. Fasting was also seen as a
social duty, since food was in short supply as winter wore on, and the weak and the
sick had the first claim on what remained on hand.
As a boost to the fasting of the body, the church developed a richer spiritual fare,
including celebration of the Eucharist every day. This practice began in Rome by the
sixth century. Weekday Mass was only at designated “stations.” The pope would arrive on horseback at the stational church. In those days, although the catechumenate
was already in eclipse, there were pre baptismal activities at the stational Masses: the
giving of the Lord’s Prayer, prayers for the godparents, and constant references to
baptism.

Letter from our Pastor—Pastoral Services Appeal
2 March 2015
Dear Friends in Christ,
While we may consider ourselves only as a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church we are part of something much greater than
any one parish or person. Our Church connects us all–as neighbors, as a community, as children of God and followers of Christ.
I appreciate the good work accomplished through our parishioners’ dedication of their gifts of time, talent and treasure. From those
who serve as liturgical ministers, to those devoted to faith formation, to those dedicated to outreach in the community, to those
committed to hosting social and community activities, our parish is alive in the spirit.
For 2015, our Diocesan PSA goal is $77,000 and our Parish goal is $100,000. As we approach July 1, 2015, the 10th Anniversary
of the re-dedication of our church, it is a time for us to continue the upgrades and improvements for our facilities that we began last
year.
You may remember that last year we fixed the outside street lights, painted the exterior and interior of the rectory, upgraded the
parking lot planters including water efficient irrigation, and replaced the carpet with laminate flooring in the meeting rooms.
This year there are plans to paint the interior of the church, improve and install more energy efficient lighting throughout the facility
and consider adding audio visual equipment in the church.
I am confident that together we can reach this extraordinary goal. Think how much of an impact these funds can make, not only in
our parish, but in the greater Catholic community as well.
Your response to God’s generosity is of great consolation to me as your pastor, and I hope that I can count on your participation
this year. I am inviting you to join me and your parish family in making your pledge. Your continued support is a great encouragement to me in my ministry here at St. Catherine of Siena as we continue the work Christ has called us to do.
You and your family remain in my prayers.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Reverend Kenneth A. Schmit

Serve Him
How can you SERVE . . .
Do you want to join a liturgical ministry but don’t know where to start?
The following are ministries in need of volunteers.
Altar Server - Our Altar Server Ministry is open to all parish boys and girls in the 4th grade and up who
have made their First Communion. This ministry offers young people the chance to actively participate in
one of the Church’s most important ministries; assisting the priest at the altar.
Usher - Ushers provide hospitality, comfort and safety at weekend Masses and other liturgies (including Holy
Days of Obligation). Before Mass, ushers foster a sense of community by welcoming members of our parish
and visitors as well as assisting with seating before and during Mass. Ushers are responsible for taking up
the collection and distributing the weekly bulletin. Come celebrate Mass with your family, serve our community and be an example of Christ’s love and witness to our community.

they perform on Saint Catherine’s stage
Tuesday, March 17, 2015
at 7:00 p.m.
Saint Catherine of Siena Parish School has been named a
Frieda Belinfante Class Act school for the second year. The
Frieda Belinfante Class Act Partnership is Pacific Symphony’s
flagship youth education program. The program connects
Pacific Symphony musicians to a select number of Orange
County elementary schools each year.
The Class Act Partnership further enhances our existing
music and art programs by providing additional experience
through the Symphony. Each year, students form a relationship with a new Symphony musician who serves as a “Class
Act teaching artist,” through activities including assemblies,
classroom lessons, a Family Night, and either an Interactive
Performance for our Transitional Kindergarten to first grade
students, or a Youth Concert at the Orange County Performing
Arts Center for our older students.
The League of American Orchestras and the National Endowment for the Arts has selected Class Act as one of the nine
most exemplary music education programs in the United
States.
This is a FREE concert for the enƟre family and
friends. The concert will highlight music by Leonard Bernstein and other composers, focusing on
this year’s theme “sharing the joy of music”.
Following the concert there will be light refreshments, corn beef and cabbage and a musician

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY
El Nuevo Testamento nos asegura que Jesús comprende
nuestra naturaleza humana (Hebreos 2:17-18).
“Nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado”.
