theheartoftheseason.SincetheSecondVaticanCouncil,theChurchhas
reemphasizedthebaptismalcharacterofLent,especiallythroughthe
restorationoftheCatechumenateanditsLentenrituals.Ourchallenge
todayistorenewourunderstandingofthisimportantseasonofthe
Churchyearandtoseehowwecanintegrateourpersonalpracticesinto
thisrenewedperspective.
WhyisBaptismsoimportantinourLentenunderstanding?Lentasa40dayseasondevelopedinthefourthcenturyfromthreemergingsources.
The irstwastheancientpaschalfastthatbeganasatwo-day
observancebeforeEasterbutwasgraduallylengthenedto40days.The
secondwasthecatechumenateasaprocessofpreparationforBaptism,
includinganintenseperiodofpreparationfortheSacramentsof
InitiationtobecelebratedatEaster.ThethirdwastheOrderof
Penitents,whichwasmodeledonthecatechumenateandsoughta
secondconversionforthosewhohadfallenbackintoserioussinafter
Baptism.Asthecatechumens(candidatesforBaptism)enteredtheir
inalperiodofpreparationforBaptism,thepenitentsandtherestofthe
communityaccompaniedthemontheirjourneyandpreparedtorenew
theirbaptismalvowsatEaster.
Lent,then,isradicallybaptismal.Onpage12,readmoreaboutAsh
WednesdayandhowwecanrenewsomeofourLentencustomsto
bringforththebaptismaltheme.
