Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The family around the world today faces tremendous
challenges. In Latin America, where Christian values remain
important, many families are wounded by hostility from the
surroundingenvironment and by broken relationships within the
family. Yet throughout the hemisphere, the Church continues to
point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing
within the family and in society. Many family and catechetical
ministry projects funded by the Collection for the Church in
Latin America offer families and communities a way to
strengthen, affirm, and celebrate their life together in faith,
offering a different and hopeful vision of relationships with
one another and with God.

Gospel reading Mark 9:2-10
Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter
said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to
say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what
they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead
meant.
Brief commentary: In this second Sunday of Lent the Chur ch tur ns our gaze towar d the gr eat outpour ing of the Father ’s love for all humanity, the
offering of his Son in whom God loves us boundlessly. Lent is a journey toward the Paschal Mystery of the suffering, death, and resurrection of the Son of
God. Key Old Testament texts help us to envision this mystery as part of God’s eternal plan. In the first reading we read about Abraham’s total devotion to
God: Abraham had renounced his past and journeyed in faith toward the land of promise; now, on the mount in the land Moriah, he is willing to renounce
his future, placing his trust in God’s faithfulness and love. However, it was to be a sacrifice of the heart, not of Isaac; and he is rewarded with a future of
countless descendants. Reread by Christians in the light of Jesus’ self-donation, who accepted death on a cross in obedience to God’s providential will, the
story of Abraham and Isaac anticipates the great mystery of Jesus’ sacrifice on the mount of Golgotha. The psalm also anticipates the “death of God’s faithful,” who is “the servant of God and the son of God’s handmaid”: he will “offer God a sacrifice,” and God will “loose his bonds.” Paul, exuberant over
God’s boundless love, expresses certainty that God will be sure to bless us in all ways, since he has already blessed us in the most supreme manner, by offering the ‘Gift that contains every gift’, his Son. We can have unreserved total confidence that God will withhold no good thing beneficial to us: we can
fully trust in God’s supreme love. We can also give the total gift of ourselves – of our total love – to God, unreservedly. In the gospel reading we are again
atop a mountain. As Abraham brought Isaac to a mount to offer him to God, now – atop a mountain (a place of revelation) – the Father reveals the deepest
identity of Jesus to Peter, James and John: “This is my beloved Son.” Transfigured before them, his unique divine life is unveiled. It is God – not Abraham,
not man – who can provide the offering that will make us whole, that will reconcile humanity to God and to itself, and that will bring true life to the world.
God will turn around the human cruelty that will be hurled against Jesus and will make the cross the instrument of the salvation of the world: love will subvert evil with good; the cross will be conquered and transformed; love will triumph. Moses (representing the Torah/the Law) and Elijah (representing the
prophets of Israel), alive with God, give witness to savior of whom the scriptures foretold. The cloud of God’s glory, a symbol also of God’s Spirit, envelop
the disciples, who are told to “Listen to him.” They are to listen to Jesus, who is the fullness of the Father’s revelation and love. And their experience would
only make sense once Jesus is risen from the dead, once God’s love is fully revealed and triumphs – a mystery still yet beyond their comprehension. We too
are to bear witness to God’s saving love in our lives, as we too are transfigured daily by God’s grace, and strive to “listen to Jesus” by loving God with all
our hearts and our neighbor as ourselves. We descend the mountain of this second Sunday of Lent transfigured to be ever more intrepid disciples and apostles of Jesus Christ in our world in order to transfigure a world profoundly disfigured by sin and evil.

Lectura de santo Evangelio según San Marcos 9:2-10
En aquel tiempo, Jesús se llevó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, subió con ellos solos a una montaña alta, y se transfiguró delante de ellos. Sus vestidos se
volvieron de un blanco deslumbrador, como no puede dejarlos ningún batanero del mundo. Se les aparecieron Elías y Moisés, conversando con Jesús.
Entonces Pedro tomó la palabra y le dijo a Jesús: “Maestro, ¡qué bien se está aquí! Vamos a hacer tres tiendas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para
Ellas.” Estaban asustados, y no sabía lo que decía. Se formó una nube que los cubrió, y salió una voz de la nube: “Éste es mi Hijo amado; escuchadlo.» De
pronto, al mirar alrededor, no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús, solo con ellos. Cuando bajaban de la montaña, Jesús les mandó: “No contéis a nadie lo que
habéis visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre resucite de entre los muertos.» Esto se les quedó grabado, y discutían qué querría decir aquello de «resucitar de
entre los muertos.”
Comentario breve: En este segundo Domingo de Cuar esma la Iglesia se tor na hacia el gr an der r amamiento del amor del Padr e por la humanidad,
la ofrenda de su Hijo en quien Dios nos ha amado infinitamente. La Cuaresma es una jornada hacia el Misterio Pascual del sufrimiento, muerte, y
resurrección del Hijo de Dios. Textos claves del Antiguo Testamento nos ayudan ver este misterio como parte del plan eterno de Dios. En la primera lectura
leemos sobre la devoción total de Abran: Abran tuvo que renunciar a su pasado y camino en fe hacia la tierra de promesa; ahora, en el monte de la tierra de
Moría, esta dispuesto a renunciar a su futuro, poniendo su confianza en la fidelidad y amor de Dios. Pero era de ser un sacrificio del corazón, no de Isaac; y
fue bendecido con un futuro de innumerables descendientes. Releído por cristianos a la luz de la auto-donación de Jesús, quien acepto muerte en cruz en
obediencia a la voluntad providencial de Dios, el relato de Abram e Isaac anticipa “la muerte del fiel de Dios,” que es “el siervo de Dios y el hijo de su
sierva”: el “ofrecerá un sacrificio a Dios,” y Dios “le desatara sus ataduras.” Pablo, alabando el amor infinito de Dios, expresa su confianza que Dios nos
bendecirá, ya que nos ha bendecido de manera suprema, ofreciéndonos el “Don que contiene todo don,” su Hijo. Podemos poseer confianza total de que
Dios no nos negara el bien nos beneficie: podemos confiar completamente en el amor supremo de Dios. También podemos darle el don total de nuestro
amor a Dios, sin reserva. En la lectura del evangelio estamos de nuevo en un monte. Así como Abran llevo a Isaac a un monte para ofrecerlo a Dios, ahora
– en un monte (lugar de revelación) – el Padre celestial revela la identidad mas profunda de Jesús a Pedro, Santiago y Juan: “Este es mi hijo amado.”
Transfigurado delante de ellos, su vida divina es descubierta. Es Dios – no Abran, no el hombre – quien puede proveer la ofrenda que nos hace salvos, que
reconcilia el mundo a Dios, y que le trae la vida verdadera al mundo. Dios tornara la crueldad humana deslazada contra Jesús y hará de la cruz el
instrumento de la salvación del mundo: el amor derrocara el mal con el bien; la cruz será conquistada y transformada; el amor triunfara. Moisés
(representando la Tora/la Ley) y Elías (representando los profetas de Israel), vivos con Dios, dan testimonio al salvador del cual las Escrituras anunciaban.
La nube de la gloria divina, símbolo también del Espíritu de Dios, envuelven a los discípulos, a cuales se les instruye que “Escuchadle.” Han de escuchar a
Jesús, quien es la plenitud de la revelación y amor del Padre. Y su experiencia la comprenderán ya cuando Jesús resucitara de entre los muertos, ya cuando
el amor de Dios haya triunfado y sido revelado plenamente – un misterio todavía mas haya de su comprensión. Nosotros también hemos de dar testimonio
del amor salvífico de Dios en nuestras vidas, tanto igual se somos transfigurados diariamente por su gracia, y esmerarnos por “escuchar a Jesús” amando a
Dios con todo corazón y a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos. Descendemos el monte de este segundo Domingo de Cuaresma transfigurados para
poder ser mas intrépidos discípulos y apóstoles de Jesucristo en nuestro mundo que esta tan profundamente desfigurado por el pecado y el mal.

legal service providers and volunteers, have teamed up with The New Americans Campaign to provide assistance to any legal residents that are looking to
