Church, Concrete. We are two individual parishes and one mission church ministered to by our Pastor, Fr. Martin Bourke, with the
assistance of Parochial Vicar, Fr. Emilio Gonzalez. In addition to sharing clergy, the churches share Pastoral Assistant for Finance,
Jamie Cline ([email protected] or 360-391-7003). Fr. Martin and Jamie have their offices at the Immaculate Conception Parish
Center located at 215 N. 15th St. in Mount Vernon, Fr. Emilio’s office is at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish located at 719 Ferry St.,
Sedro-Woolley.

Our Lady of Sheshan Waits
Our Lady of Sheshan is the Patroness of China. Since 1950 and the communist revolution, religious freedom has been
non-existent. For over half a century, Christians all over the world have waited for a breakthrough in religious tolerance,
but it seems in vain. In spite of the economic change and political out-reach, Chinese attitudes towards Christianity have
been frozen in place.
Reading an article associated with Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong, you can sense his heart break. “If China
does not change, there is not much we can expect. They are demolishing churches and taking crosses out of buildings,” he says despondently. Ther e ar e about 375,000 Catholics in Hong Kong wher e the r ecent demonstr ations
and parades were seeking greater freedom.
On an economic level China benefits from open export markets in the western world, but when it comes to religion, there are no signs of a thaw. It is a double standard; we want your money, but nothing of your faith.
What is remarkable is that militarily China is beginning to flex its muscle. Just a few days ago I read of their project to
build an airstrip on one of the Spratly Islands, which are claimed by both the Philippines and Vietnam.
China is also in dispute with Japan over the Senkaku Islands east of Taiwan. In recent times they have also displayed
their first aircraft carrier, a remodeled Soviet one.
When asked if he would recommend Pope Francis to go to China, Cardinal Zen said “no.” The impression I got
was that such a visit would be manipulated by the Chinese government for their own purposes and people would
suffer.
In spite of the bamboo curtain, sooner or later the ideas of the dignity of the human person central to Christianity will
seep in through the cracks of Chinese communism. Just as the Soviet Union fell apart, so also the one party system of
authority and control will give way to the freedom sought by each individual soul.
Let us pray that Our Lady of Sheshan’s wait will not endure.

Joe Brester, age 42, is the oldest son of LaVonne and Bob Brester. He is fighting a courageous battle against Acute
Lymphatic Leukemia, extremely rare in adults. He was diagnosed with this condition in February 2014, and underwent a
grueling regimen of chemotherapy treatment. Joe maintained a grateful and positive attitude throughout his treatment
and was deemed in remission in September 2014. In January, Joe started feeling sick again and a bone marrow test confirmed the cancer was back and was more aggressive than before and spreading faster. Unfortunately, all treatment options are expensive and Joe has exhausted their savings. This disease has put Joe, his wife and 2 children in a position

Moving the Organ
Because the new church will not be ready to receive the
organ until April, work will not start until after Easter. We
will need a number of people to volunteer to help with this
move when the time comes. Watch for more information

Your Knights of Columbus Council 2126 is
sponsoring Soup Suppers every Wednesday
through the Lenten Season at the Saint Joseph’s Center.
Please come and join us for soup and fellowship. We
begin serving at 4:30 and close the doors at 7:00.

The New Church: The br ickwor k on the Nor th
side was completed this past week. The stucco
work on the towers and the main body of the
church will occur over the next few weeks. The
interior insulation is complete and the plasterboard
(GWB gypsum wall board) will be installed in the
Narthex area and the Nave. Interior sheathing on
the South wall of the Nave was completed last
week along with the framing of the East wall. The
North side of the Nave will also be covered with
Tyvek to protect it from moisture intrusion.
Our security system has been activated and any
intrusions after hours will be instantaneously reported to the Mount Vernon Police Department. Extra lighting has been
activated around and inside the building along with additional video cameras. Keep an eye on the site after dark.

Nuestra Señora de Sheshan Waits
Nuestra Señora de SheShan es la Patrona de China. Desde 1950 y la revolución comunista, la libertad religiosa
ha sido inexistente. Durante más de medio siglo, los cristianos de todo el mundo han esperado para un gran
avance en la tolerancia religiosa, pero parece en vano. A pesar del cambio económico y fuera de alcance político, actitudes chinas hacia el cristianismo quedan congeladas en su lugar.
Leyendo un artículo relacionado con el cardenal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun de Hong Kong, se puede sentir su corazón roto. "Si China no cambia, no hay mucho que podamos esperar. Están demoliendo iglesias y tomando cruces de los edificios ", dice con desánimo. Hay alrededor de 375,000 católicos en Hong Kong, donde las recientes manifestaciones y desfiles buscan una mayor libertad.
En el plano económico de China se beneficia de los mercados abiertos de exportación al mundo occidental,
pero cuando se trata de religión, no hay señales de deshielo. Es una doble moral; queremos su dinero, pero nada de su fe.

que me dio fue que esa visita sería manipulada por el gobierno chino para sus propios fines y la gente iba a
sufrir.
A pesar de la cortina de bambú, tarde o temprano, las ideas de la dignidad de la persona humana esencial para
el cristianismo se filtran a través de las grietas del comunismo chino. Al igual que la Unión Soviética se desintegró, así también el sistema de partido único de autoridad y control dará paso a la libertad buscada por cada
alma individual.

Joe Brester, de 42 años, es el hijo mayor de LaVonne y Bob Brester. Él está luchando una batalla contra la leucemia
linfática aguda, muy poco frecuente en los adultos. Fue diagnosticado con esta condición en febrero del 2014, y fue
sometido a un régimen agotador de tratamiento de quimioterapia. Joe mantuvo una actitud agradecida y positiva a
lo largo de su tratamiento y se consideró estable en septiembre de 2014. En enero, Joe comenzó a sentirse enfermo
de nuevo y una prueba de médula ósea confirmó que el cáncer había regresado y venia más agresivo que antes y se

Noticias de la Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción , Mount Vernon
Nueva Iglesia: la instalación de los ladrillos en el
lado norte se termino la semana pasada. El trabajo de
estuco en las torres y el cuerpo principal de la iglesia
ocurrirá en las próximas semanas. El aislamiento interior está completo y la placa de yeso se instalará en la
zona Narthex y la Nave. El revestimiento interior en la
pared sur de la nave se completó la semana pasada
junto con la elaboración de la pared oriental. El lado
norte de la nave también estará cubierto con Tyvek
para protegerlo de la intrusión de la humedad.
Nuestro sistema de seguridad ha sido activado y cualquier intrusión después de horas será informado de forma instantánea al Departamento de Policía de Mount Vernon. Iluminación adicional se ha activado alrededor
y dentro del edificio junto con las cámaras de vídeo adicionales. Mantenga un ojo en la construcción después
del anochecer.
Irrigación y Jardinería: Nueve nuevos árboles, ríver Abedul y Dogwood se han plantado en la construcción. Estos, junto con los pinos plantados a lo largo de la barda del Sur terminan la primera ronda de la

Sopa en cuaresma; Los Caballeros de
Colón del Consejo 2126 están
patrocinando cenas de sopa todos los miércoles, después del
miércoles de Ceniza (25 febrero1 abril), durante el tiempo de
Cuaresma en el Centro de San
José. Por favor, ven y únete a
nosotros a comer una sopita y a
