We thank you for coming to this celebration. We also had a wonderful weekend to celebrate the President’s Day weekend before we commenced on the pilgrimage of Lent, which calls us to Fast from all temptation to focus on praying and doing works of Charity. We thank you for coming to the Ash Wednesday Masses and receiving the ashes (on our foreheads) to remind us that we are from the dust (ashes) and it is one day we will return (to ashes). We are entering the 40 days of fasting, praying, and doing the work of mercy as our Lenten journey commenced on Ash Wednesday. We are on the First Sunday of Lent and we are on the journey with the Catechumens and Candidates to pray and to practice our Faith with them during this period of purification and catechizing. We will focus on different themes with them during Lent: First Week is on “The Temptation of the Lord, or The Spiritual meaning of Lent”, Second Week is on “The Transfiguration of the Lord”; Third Week is on “The Woman of Samaria when she met with the Lord”; Forth Week is on “The Man born Blind and the Lord healing him”; Fifth Week is on “How the Lord Raised up Lazarus”; and the Passion of the Lord, which focuses on “The Power of the Cross”. Then we celebrate Holy Week with the Easter Triduum. So, we want to assist you in preparing on how to make each day of Lent special for you. We cordially invite you to read the m aterial that we have in the Church or in the parish office and on the regional parishes’ website and bulletin about being on the Lenten Jo urney. You are also invited to join us at daily Mass, receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation that we have before and after Daily Mass , on Friday from 6PM to 7PM or on Saturday (regularly) at each parish. You also can call and make an appointment with a Priest at their office or in the Church when you are free to come. You are also cordially invited to join us for Stations of the Cross each Friday and al so on other days of the week. We also pray the Rosary before Daily Mass and Weekend Masses. It is a wonderful Journey with the Faith Community. We also have Lenten retreats for different groups and ministers of the parishes. It is a very special time to pray and it is a good time to fast from all sources of temptation that we have each day. It is also a very important time to do the work of Charity. We have the Rice Bowl (box) program for the poor and you are welcome to use the material that we have. We will collect the box on Holy Thursd ay or during Holy Week and we send all the collection from this project to the Rice Bowl Project to assist the poor within the Archdiocese and throughout the World. I was in India a few years ago and I was able to witness this Rice Bowl program at work, as it was use d to assist farmers (from a village) to buy seeds to farm and to feed their families. This program assists the poor (i.e. assists many students who attend the Catholic School there, as their parents are not able to feed them) with food. We welcome Father Joseph Hai-Dang Vu who is a resident at St. Ann’s Rectory and he is assisting the Archdiocese (various parishes) when a priest is needed for the weekend, is away for retreat or on a short vacation. We are very happy to have him to be wit h us for a short time. Please welcome him when you see him around our regional parishes. We thank you for supporting us at St. John of the Woods with the Italia Fest Spaghetti dinner this Saturday. We thank the core team who organized and assisted us to have this event in our parish. We thank you for coming to St. Ann’s Church hall once a month (on a Friday night) to play Bunco which is a wonde rful game we have at our parish. It was a wonderful Senior and Young at Heart Mass that we had this month (last Thursday after As h Wednesday). We thank the seniors’ group from each parish for keeping up with their own activities (social and fellowship with each other). Because of the Super Bowl game, we moved the Breakfast at St. John of the Woods from the First Sunday of the month t o the Second Sunday (Feb. 8th ). We thank the core team who assisted us with this wonderful tradition at our parish. There are many different activities and ministries that we have in our regional parishes and you are cordially invited to join us. We thank the core team on the Long Range Plan project with Vision 2017 for what they do and try to assist us with (implementa tion of the document). You may want to read the Vision 2017 document at home or check it on our parishes’ website so you have all the information on what we have done in regards to the time line and what we are doing and will do from the core team’s meeting minutes that is posted. It was a wonderful meeting with the United in Faith Campaign at Sacred Heart’s Church last week. I also had a chance to meet with the construction company with the parish leadership. I will share with you the information on where we are with the pro ject and keep you in the loop of what we do with the project at Sacred Heart’s Church. I had a chance to meet with students and their parents from the Religious Education at St. John of the Woods’ Church. I enjo yed the interview very much because I had a chance to talk with each student from the program and ask them on what they have learned and listened carefully to what they had shared with me on their Faith journey. I am very proud of the teachers, catechists, parents, and volunteers from the religious education program that we have at our regional parishes. They serve the Lord and they are good stewards of their time and talent to share with us in this area of the parish ministry. I am sorry for any challenges that it may cause you during the time of demolition of the old school building at Sacred Heart Parish. We spent a long period of time working with the parish leadership, volunteers, and benefactor who assist us with this project. We had permission from the City of Tacoma for last four months. We hope that we will be able to rise up enough financial support fo r the new building. It is important for us to keep our parish’s ministry and mission in our daily prayers and thoughts. It is more important to be involved in what we can do with our time and talent to assist. The parish operation needs us to support financially, so please be genero us with your parish on your contribution so we are able to pay all the bills and keep the parish healthy and holy to serve you and your family! May the Lord continue to bless upon our Lenten Journey! Sincerely Yours in Christ, Our website: www.trparishes.org Please remember your parish in your Will. Fr. Tuan Nguyen, D. ANN: 8:30am - 7:00pm Thursdays 5pm - 7pm Tuesdays Divine Mercy & Mass (Samoan Comm.) 7:00pm Fridays Mass (Vietnamese Language) By Barbara & Clarence Leingang Every year as Lent approaches, we are given the rules for Lenten fasting and abstinence. The Catechism defines fasting as “refraining from food and drink as an expression of interior penance, in imitation of the fast of Jesus for 40 days in the desert.” Abstinence requires abstaining from meat. The modern church regularly abstained from meat on Fridays, ember days, and Ash Wednesday. After Vatican II, the faithful no longer was subject to abstinence on Fridays although they were encouraged to keep this ancient custom. Fridays can still be observed as a day of penance by continuing to practice abstinence. Ember days are no longer observed but abstinence from meat continues for Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent. Why is this custom observed in the first place? Lent is the 40 days before Easter and this is a time for Catholics to pray, fast, contemplate and engage in acts of spiritual self-discipline. Catholics do this because Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Christ and in so doing it prepares them for the greatest holy day of the Christian Year. Archbishop Sheen summarized this discipline as: “First comes the fast, then comes the feast.” The reason Lent lasts 40 days is that 40 is the traditional number of judgment and spiritual testing in the Bible (Gn 7:4, Ex 24:8, 34:28) Christ also spent 40days in the desert fasting and preparing for his public ministry. Therefore Catholics imitate Christ by spending 40 days in the spiritual discipline of fasting and abstaining. Fasting can be traced back to both the Old and New Testament. Christ instructed his disciples as to how to fast (Mt 6:16-18). Abstinence from certain foods is also a biblical discipline (Daniel 10:2-3) Christ’s Crucifixion on a Friday is commemorated during Lent by abstaining from meat on that day of the week. The only kind of flesh eaten on Friday is fish, which is a symbol of Christ. Fasting and abstinence is only one of three recognized forms of penance in the Church, the other two are prayer and charity. There are total 64 people who are at 70 and more. The community honor them and thank them for their lives. We honor our elders by giving them respect and hearing their wisdom, as they did with their elders. They grew up practicing in their lives what their elders taught them. We have the same opportunity in our lives to continue the circle. We honor our elders when we put into practice what we have been taught. We honor them when we show respect for them. We honor our elders when we say to them, you have shown us the gifts of love, laughter and learning. Their teachings will continue from generation to generation. In Christ, Eduardo Garnica and Esmeralda Sacred Heart Church from Tacoma Congratulations Châu and Chánh! May your marriage be blessed with love, joy and companionship for all the years of your life! February 22: Chair of St. Peter St. Peter was the prince of the apostles and the first pope. Jesus said to him, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). After Jesus went back to heaven, St. Peter preached the Gospel. He guided the small but growing Christian community. At first, Peter labored in Jerusalem and in Antioch, two big cities of the east. Later, he went to preach the Gospel in Rome, the capital of the world. What chance did Peter have to perform his great task for the Lord? His Master had been crucified but then had risen. Who would believe that? The evils of pagan Rome would drown his voice no matter how dedicated he may be. But the Holy Spirit was alive in Peter. He courageously took up the ministry Jesus had left him. Never again would Peter deny his Lord. Never again would Peter put his own personal well-being before the good of the Church. The feast of St. Peter's Chair at Rome reminds us that St. Peter started the Christian community in that city. The special chair is a symbol of the authority that was given to him by Jesus. Kings of old sat on thrones and ruled. Peter's chair is a symbol of his authority from Jesus to rule the Church. St. Peter was martyred for the faith, but down through the ages there has always been a bishop of Rome. He is the pope. The pope rules the whole Church, as St. Peter did, in Jesus' name. We call the successor of St. Peter the Holy Father. 4 ST. Walking around the property and checking all doors takes approximately 20 minutes. Due to the fact that the freezers and refrigerators, in the parish hall were turned off accidently in January, they should be checked nightly. You will be given a schedule and should there be a problem with your scheduled time you can contact one of the other men on the schedule to switch times. Please prayerfully consider helping us out by coming forward to join this team.
