Redemp ve Suffering
February 8, 2015
ORDINARY TIME 5
Suffering and death are universal experiences that don’t come only to the selfish,
the sinful or to those who are evil. They come to the young, the old, the wise and
the imprudent, to Chris ans and non-Chris ans, to saints and sinners.
In our first reading Job says, “My pain is more than I can bear. I can’t sleep at
night. I shall not see happiness again.” His lament is a cry we all feel when we or
a loved one becomes seriously ill or dies. Maybe our hurt is emo onal, such as a
marriage in distress, a child’s disobedience or a friend’s betrayal.
The Lord healed Simon’s mother-in-law and so many others that He had to find
me alone in the desert for “prayer.” Some were healed physically and others
spiritually. The deepest healing people need is mostly spiritual. This happens
when they are given the strength to accept their condi on, even to make their
suffering a place of strength, depth and compassion for others. That is a
powerful and healing grace because suffering can make us bi er, isolated, selfabsorbed and extremely selfish. It is a sign of the touch of Christ when our
suffering makes us more dependent on God as we recognize the need for
consistent prayer in our lives.
When we suffer, we see the deep truth about the world, the vulnerability of life,
what is important and how we all need compassion; we accept that our world is
not perfect and that we are not the perfect people portrayed in adver sing; we
understand that life is not filled with happy endings as in the movies. When in
suffering we unite our pain with the cross of Christ, we make our own pain an
occasion for spiritual victory for ourselves and for others.
It is in this context that we can best understand the Sacrament of the Anoin ng
of the Sick - for centuries given to people who were seriously ill - meant to be a
Sacrament of spiritual and physical healing, strength and peace. The Church has
restored it as a sacrament not just for those at the point of death, but also for all
who are seriously ill. The Lord is present in this Sacrament at a me in our life
when serious illness can challenge our faith.
This Sacrament helps us see that when we think we are alone, we are not; that
when our body is weak, our soul can be strong. This wonderful Sacrament
provides healing that is some mes physical, other mes emo onal and always
spiritual. When we feel that no one could possibly understand what we are going
through, Jesus joins us in our suffering and turns a moment of despera on into a
moment of conversion.
Jesus came to people who were ill back in
Pales ne. Jesus comes again to people who are ill
today. Are we ready to accept suffering and unite
it to Christ’s suffering, and claim victory for
ourselves and for others?
