St. Rose of Lima Parish Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima In Christ, We are Bread for one another: Broken… we gather. Nourished… we reach out. ………………….....……………………………. En Cristo, Somos Pan para cada uno: Lo Dividimos… Nos Juntamos. Alimentados… tendemos la mano. November 9, 2014 DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA In 324 A.D., Pope St. Sylvester consecrated the first public Chris an church in Rome, “The Church of Saint Savior” built on property given to the Church by the Emperor Constan ne. Later, during the eleventh century, its name was changed to "Cathedral of St. John Lateran." This church is important for several reasons: First, it is the Cathedral Church of the Holy Father as Bishop of Rome. This makes it the "mother" of all Cathedrals around the world. Secondly, it was the center of the Catholic Church for centuries, where the Popes lived and were buried for a thousand years before St. Peter’s Basilica was ever built and where several Ecumenical Councils were held. Thirdly, this Cathedral makes it possible for us to be in a public place of worship right now. We are an "Ins tu onal Church" because, back then, Chris anity was ins tu onalized in the Roman Empire. Finally, we celebrate its dedica on both to honor our link with the Pope and to reflect on the meaning of church buildings, including our own parish church. There are wonderful churches around the world displaying many architectural styles, each reflec ng some dimension of our faith. Romanesque churches (Na onal Shrine of the Immaculate Concep on), are huge and massive, displaying Christ’s majesty and grace. Gothic churches (Na onal Cathedral), emphasize height and light, poin ng us toward heaven. Renaissance churches (St. Peter’s Basilica), emphasize order and hierarchy. Baroque colorful churches put devo on and emo on into complex structures. At a me of "sensory overload," modern churches are built with simplicity to emphasize the basic elements of altar, tabernacle, chair, lectern and bap smal font. There is no place like home - our parish church. What is the meaning of our parish church? Here Christ's grace flows to us in the celebra on of Mass and the Sacraments as well as in individual moments of personal prayer for ourselves and of intercession for others. Here we cross a threshold from the world into God's Kingdom, like an invisible bridge; we are reminded that we have a des ny beyond this present moment. Here we cross a threshold from daily life, where we are judged by ques onable human standards, to a place of grace where we all have dignity and worth and find compassion in God’s sight. Our parish church is a true reflec on of our souls. People come to church expec ng it to be a bright, clean and welcoming place where God's presence is reflected. But for that to happen, first, we must make sure that our souls are clean of sin and deceit and filled with Jesus' light. The Dedica on of the Lateran Basilica is both an opportunity to thank God that we have a parish nearby and a reminder that God’s purpose is being worked out in churches all over the world. Our parish church is truly a place where earthly me and eternity, God and humanity meet. 11701 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20878-1024 PHONE: 301-948-7545 FAX: 301-869-2170 EMERGENCIES (A er Hours): 301-355-8191 CANCELLATION INFORMATION: x307 WEBSITE: www.strose-parish.org EUCHARIST / EUCARISTÍA Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Monday-Friday................................... 8:30 am (English) 1er Viernes ........................................ 7:00 pm (Español) Sunday............................................... 7:15 am (English) 1er Dimanche................................... 10:00 am (Français) 2nd Sunday ........................................ 5:00 pm (Tagalog) Church / Iglesia Saturday Vigil ..................................... 5:00 pm (English) Sunday...... 8:45 am (English) & 11:15 am (English + ASL) Domingo ........................................... 1:00 pm (Español) RECONCILIATION / RECONCILIACIÓN Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Thursday........................ 7:00-9:00 pm (English/Español) Church / Iglesia Saturday ..................................... 4:00-4:30 pm (English) Domingo .................................... 2:15-3:15 pm (Español) BAPTISM PREPARATION / PREPARACIÓN PARA BAUTIZO Bap sm Classes Begin while pregnant or awai ng adop on. We display our Book of the Dead near the entrance of the Church and the Historic Chapel; recorded on the pages of this book are the names of those for whom we held funeral services or buried in our cemetery. There are also pages for wri ng in your deceased loved ones. Visit the parish library and borrow a book about a saint. We have chosen some of these books and put them on display. O.W.L.S. INFO: Chris ne Jeffrey, cjeff[email protected] Rite of Acceptance & Rite of Welcome This weekend, we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome for some who made the decision to move forward in their journey as a catechumen (not bap zed) or candidate (bap zed Chris an or Catholic). Their choice to go on marks their “Exodus” from the Period of Inquiry (the Precatechumenate) into a new way of life. This new life will be an answer to God’s earlier call to follow Him. They are now part of the St. Rose community, the family of God. Their acceptance into this worshipping community is marked by a formal Rite, a step closer to the Easter sacraments to which they will be “elected”. Pilgrimage of the Relic of St. John Paul II On Wed., Nov. 12, St. John Neumann Parish in Gaithersburg will have the great privilege of receiving the pilgrim relic for the postula on of St. John Paul II.
