February ‘15 • MC Read about what’s happening this month! HarborChase | Jasper | 2100 Viking Drive • Jasper, AL 35501 | 205-384-0660 George Washington’s Birthday Although George Washington’s birthday is celebrated on February 22, it is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of February. To complicate matters, Washington was actually born on February 11 in 1731! How can that be? During Washington’s lifetime, people in Great Britain and America switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar (something most of Europe had done in 1582). As a result of this calendar reform, people born before 1752 were told to add 11 days to their birth dates. Those born between January 1 and March 25, as Washington was, also had to add one year to be in sync with the new calendar. By the time Washington became president in 1789, he celebrated his birthday on February 22 and listed his year of birth as 1732. “Worry is the interest paid by those who borrow trouble.” – George Washington, (1732-99) Reasons People Volunteer People volunteer for a number of different reasons, ranging from a desire to learn new skills, have fun or make a difference. Some people volunteer because they just love helping others. Their own joy of giving and making a difference makes them feel valued and valuable to the ones they are serving. They receive back a thousandfold by seeing the impacts created for the people they are helping. Others volunteer because they feel a need to give back to a community that has been good to them and they want to express their gratitude by paying it forward into their community. Still others volunteer because it gives them a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives. It’s like their contribution to others is fulfilling a critical aspect for their own self-expression in the world. Last but not least, great volunteers enjoy themselves while giving to others. Long-term studies have shown that volunteers live longer, are in better health, have lower rates of depression and less heart disease. - adapted from www.articlecity.com Birthdays Franklin Harris................... Thank You For Your Understanding • HC Jasper MC Fun Valentine Candy Facts Valentine’s Day and candy are a match made in heaven. Here’s more about the holiday’s long association with sweets and the trends, history and trivia surrounding Valentine’s Day and candy. Trivia and Tidbits • More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day. • American men say they’d prefer to receive boxed chocolate as a Valentine’s Day present followed by gourmet, high-end chocolates then conversation heart candies. • A majority of men (53 percent) admit that they lean on friends and family to find the perfect present for their sweetheart while 11 percent look to co-workers, 10 percent ask the cashier and 7 percent consult the World Wide Web. • Even if they don’t make the final purchases until the last few days, the majority of men (75%) testify that they plan ahead for Valentine’s Day. • American men and women agree that the most romantic place to share candy is in front of the fireplace. History • In the 1800’s physicians commonly advised their lovelorn patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining. • As an elixir for love, chocolate has been believed throughout history to bring smiles to the broken-hearted and to prompt amorous feelings in both men and women. It is believed that Madame Du Barry served it to all her suitors; Casanova consumed chocolate instead of champagne to induce romance; and Montezuma, the king of the ancient Aztecs, believed chocolate would make him attractive. Conversation Hearts • About 8 billion hearts will be produced this year; that’s enough candy to stretch from Rome, Italy to Valentine, Arizona 20 times and back again. • The peak selling season for conversation hearts last only six weeks, but confectioners produce the candy for nearly eleven months of the year. • At least 10 new conversation heart sayings are introduced each year. Recent additions include “Yeah Right,” “Call Home” and “Puppy Love.” • Each year the television game show JEOPARDY! includes questions about conversation hearts on its Valentine’s Day show. r i A e h t n i s i e v o L Love isn’t something you find. This annual holiday is observed not only in America, but also Canada and the United Kingdom. The UK, however, celebrates the holiday in October. During this month, people nationwide commemorate the achievements of great AfricanAmericans, celebrating memorable events and people throughout history. Decades ago, this momentous occasion was only celebrated during Black History Week. However, the holiday expanded to Black History Month in February 1970, following a proposal by Kent State University students in February 1969. In 1976, the expansion of this holiday was recognized by U.S. government officials, with President Gerald Ford acknowledging the holiday and encouraging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Designed & Printed by Corwin Design & Graphics Corporation • www.MyCorwinOnline.com • 1-877-CORWIN2 2100 Viking Drive Jasper, AL 35501 (205) 384-0660 An HRA Community
