How can we use this to understand our lives? We are all sick. We are sinners. We were born with original sin. And, we can be sick from many things including greed, resentment and hatred. Maybe there is something in each of us we wish we were cured of. Jesus touches Simon’s mother-in-law. Does Jesus touch us? While we are living our daily lives do we let Him touch us? When Jesus cures her she begins to wait on them. Do we give our life to Christ. Do we get up and serve Him? We should give our life to God because He has saved us. —Deacon Mike We all love the idea of finding a treasure! One big treasure is a time to get away from it all. A time to relax and forget about the job, the house, and the pressures of everyday living. How often in today’s world we hear people saying, “I would like to take some time to look at my life, my values, and where I am going.” A mission is a great time to look at your relationship with God, your relationship with your family and yourself. When you take the time to do this, you’ll discover the true treasures that God has for you. Join us next month for a parish mission at Immaculate Conception Church. Mission nightly at 7:00 p.m., Sunday March 15th through Wednesday March 18th. A mission is an important time: To help you find Jesus Christ in your life To help you look at yourself and your family in the spirit of Jesus Christ To help you realize that the wisdom and guidelines of Jesus Christ will bring you happiness here and for all eternity. PARISH MISSION PRAYER All praise and glory are yours Loving Father, maker and ruler of the universe. We praise you for calling us to be your people, Your beloved sons and daughters. STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITY The good steward is “Spirit Fit”. If you subscribe to the St. Louis Review, the term “Spirit Fit” should sound familiar. A couple of weeks ago the center section of the paper was dedicated to a discussion of what that means and how we can achieve spiritual fitness. You can access the entire article at stlreview.com. Basically, the article revolves around the idea that growing in faith should be a life long pursuit. Dr. Ed Hogan, director of the Paul VI Institute is quoted as saying, “What if you left any other relationship at the eighthgrade level? Or as a senior in high school? We don’t want to spend our whole lives there, do we?” Dr. Hogan urges us to find something that will help us grow in faith. Are you “Spirit Fit” as an adult, or are you still in the eighth grade? Guide our community as we try to follow Jesus. Fill us with love for those in need of our help, and open our hearts to all. Let your Spirit teach us to serve in love and to praise you by our work and worship. Bless our Parish Mission. May each of us in the Parish receive the grace we most need during this Mission. May those who no longer pray with us be anointed with your Holy Spirit and join us again. Father of all, we praise you through Jesus Christ our Brother, in the love of your Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Last rites” is a persistent but pesky phrase in the Catholic lexicon, and not a particularly useful phrase since it props open the door to misunderstanding. Many Catholics presume it refers to the anointing of the sick, yet there is nothing “last” about it. Clearly, the Church desires anointing to be celebrated fairly early on in the crisis of illness, and not as a last measure. The Rites for the Dying stand apart in the Church’s plan, and include two principal rites. The first is viaticum, Latin for “food for the journey,” the reception of Holy Communion by a dying person. Even very active and aware Catholics often do not realize that this “last rite” does not require a priest’s presence, but can be conducted by a deacon or minister of Holy Communion. The second “last rite” in the pastoral plan is a prayer called “Commendation of the Dying.” Similarly, this does not require the presence of a priest, but can be led by any minister or family member. Too often, we have focused on what only a priest can do, namely anoint, and have forgotten the fullness of liturgical care that the Church desires for its dying faithful. The “last rites” are completely available to us even when a priest is not. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. BEGINNING AGAIN If I were to begin life again, I would want it as it was. I would only open my eyes a little more. —Jules Renard RISE AND SHINE WITH SVDP Were you aware that the Hardee’s Rise and Shine program is not only a great way to start the morning on Friday, February 13th, but it is also a way to give back to our community. The St. Vincent de Paul Society and Hardee’s have teamed up again for their annual Rise and Shine program. Our local SVDP Society has helped several local families this winter with their electric bills and their rent totaling over $2,000. If you would like to help out we could use a couple of people to work. We just need two people to work each of the two shifts at the Hardee’s locations in Leadington and Bonne Terre. The first shift is 6-8 a.m. and the second shift is 8-10 a.m. If you can help, please call Clay at 573-315-6883. Your help is greatly appreciated. ON LOVE If you would be loved, love and be lovable. —Benjamin Franklin February 8, 2015 ASH WEDNESDAY MASS WITH DISTRIBUTION OF ASHES Masses with distribution of ashes will be at Immaculate Conception Church on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at both 8:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. SPECIAL COLLECTION Next week, on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region that still struggles from the effects of Soviet rule. DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! Expressions of Prayer. How do you pray? The Church has identified 3 expressions of prayer: 1)vocal prayer (associating the body with the interior prayer of the heart), 2)meditation (engagement of thought, imagination, and emotion to deepen our faith), and 3)contemplation (a simple gaze upon God in silence and love). The feature common to all of them is attention to the presence of God in the heart. Do you have a favorite expression of prayer? archstl.org/dynamic Happy Valentines Day!
