LAWRENCE CHURCH PAGE 3 from Fr. Roman Praised Be Our Lord Jesus Christ! They came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. [Mark 1:21-23] In a rebellious age, the whole notion of talking about authority seems quaintly “out of fashion”. Thinking of authority can send shivers up our spines as we recall how negatively we may have been treated by authority figures in our lives. However, Jesus uses his authority to call forth the best in each one of us and to draw each person to God. That is why the words of Jesus are so precious – they are about how to be saved and should be taken seriously. The real reason for authority in the Church is to keep the Lord’s word alive in the world and to keep us reminded of what he says and speaks to us. The word of God will always challenge us to do the right thing, to choose the right way. In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in Consecrated Life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, 40 days after the birth of Jesus, shows us Mary and Joseph who, in obedience to the Law of Moses, go to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer the child, their first born son, to the Lord and to redeem him through a sacrifice (Luke 2:22-24). It is one of the cases in which liturgical time reflects historical time, because The Presentation of the Lord marks 40 days after the Birth of Jesus. The theme of Christ the Light is taken up again and extended in this feast. The Presentation of the Lord celebrates the mystery of consecration: the consecration of Christ, the consecration of Mary and those who place themselves in the hands of Jesus for love of the Kingdom of God. Let’s pray for all those who have devoted themselves to the Consecrated Life so they may be witnesses of faith and grace and may enthusiastically engage in the New Evangelization. Fr. We step with the foot of charity when we work to assist others with their immediate, short-term needs. We step with the foot of justice when we work to address the root causes of problems facing our communities. The Emergency Relief Committee met in December to consider requests for assistance and made donations to 10 groups/causes. Here are some of the thank you’s we have received: “Dorothy Day spoke of the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Whenever there was need there was always enough to fill it. Your generosity assures that our table is always full. Thank you for your gift to Manna Community Meal.” “Your very generous donation is greatly appreciated and will be used to purchase diapers baby wash, wipes, onesies, pajamas, coats, hats and clothing for our ‘little ones’. Thank you from all of us at Birthright.” “We struggle to pay our day to day expenses and rely on donations to keep our pantry going. It is very challenging to keep the shelves stocked here at St. Jude’s. You can only imagine our delight when we opened the mail and found your donation! It is truly a testament that we are doing God’s work, and you, through your generosity, are doing God’s work too.” “Thank you for this generous donation; we deeply appreciate your support of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen over the years. By now you have enabled us to assist literally hundreds and hundreds of people, and for that we are grateful.” MCREST 2015 April 5 – April 12 NEWS MCREST is the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team. The store relies on the generosity of volunteers to ensure that the shelves are fully stocked and looking great for customers. There are several areas where volunteer support is needed including: greeting customers, receiving incoming donations, sorting, tagging and hanging donated items, as well as testing electronic appliances, arranging the sales floor and stocking products. Please consider volunteering at a store. There is a store in our area at Hahn Road and VanDyke, 45550 Van Dyke Utica, MI 48317. The store’s phone number is 586-323-5133 and its hours are Monday – Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. You will need to contact the main office of St. Vincent de Paul at (313) 393-2930 for more information on volunteering. Youth 16 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Please mention you are a St. Lawrence parishioner to the contact person at the store. Your donated hours turn into dollars that are put on to debit cards. The Vincentians at St. Lawrence then use the debit cards to help their clients with any purchases they need to make thereby helping their clients stretch their resources. Your support is greatly appreciated! Please call the parish office at 586-731-5347 if you have any questions. Founded in 1833, St. Vincent de Paul is an international, Catholic, lay organization that helps those in need. It is not a social service agency, it is a person to person Catholic Ministry that sees the face of Christ in the face of those who are suffering. ST. LAWRENCE CHURCH UTICA, MICHIGAN PAGE 5 Living the Good News Little Flock February 1, 2015 In today’s gospel reading, Jesus is teaching “with authority” in the synagogue. Someone who has authority can sometimes be intimidating, depending on how they use their authority. From its Latin roots, authority means origin or originator. Jesus’ authority is not a negative power over us. Jesus has authority because he is God, the origin of all authority, goodness and truth. He uses this authority to overcome evil – an unclean spirit. All of us confront many battles between good and evil in our daily living. We must decide between choices that will destroy our relationship with God or strengthen it. We, too, have the authority to overcome evil. Through our baptism, when we are baptized into Christ, we are holy ones “of God.” Every day we must be as bold as Jesus in confronting whatever demons keep us from growing in the life to which God calls us. Have a great week and God bless, Peggy DeClercq Pastoral Associate The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord—Monday, February 2 Also known as Candlemas, inspired by the words of the canticle ("a light to the revelation of the Gentiles"), by the 11th century, the custom had developed of blessing candles on the Feast of the Presentation. Parishioners are invited to bring candles from home to the 8 a.m. morning mass. Candles used at home and in the church will be blessed at the morning mass. Candles for use at home will be available in the parish office. Your donation is appreciated. Prayer for Vocations Dear God, We pray for young men and women who are searching for ways to serve you. May they be open to all that you may ask. Walking In The Image of God An Introduction to Biblical Manhood Evangelization is telling an unbelieving world that the Gospels are true revelations from God, and that these revelations impact societies, making them healthier and stronger. The most effective evangelization does not come out of carefully crafted speeches, videos, poster slogans, or any other media. The most effective evangelization comes from and through the lived examples of human experiences. Men, in particular, have a distinct responsibility to step up and reclaim a leadership role in demonstrating to a questioning world, that being a real man is not measured in one’s accomplishments, but in one’s ability to reflect Christ. Walking In The Image Of God, is an open invitation for adult men of all ages to come and explore what it means to walk in the image of God. Being presented on the first Saturday of Lent, this day of reflection provides an opportunity for men to use Lent as a time of reflection on their particular cooperation in the evangelization of their families, friends, and communities. UTICA, MICHIGAN Profoundly Pro-Life "The Silent Scream" In 1984, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a former abortionist and founder of NARAL Pro-Choice America who became a dynamic pro-life activist, released a film showing an abortion of a 12 week old fetus "from the victim's vantage point". Using ultrasound technology, the chilling video is graphic and disturbing. Dr. Nathanson, who narrates the film, describes at one point how the baby's heartbeat speeds up and "how it seems to open its mouth in a chilling silent scream". The film was seen on TV and widely distributed to high schools and colleges. President Ronald Reagan, after viewing the film, said that "if every member of Congress could see that film they would move quickly to end the tragedy of abortion". Planned Parenthood and others quickly attacked the film as propaganda, renouncing any possibility that an unborn child can feel pain. We now know differently. Science shows us that there is substantial medical evidence that an unborn child is capable of experiencing pain at least by 20 weeks after fertilization. On January 16, 2015, U.S. House Bill HR 36, "Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act", was introduced into Congress. The bill makes abortion illegal (with limited exceptions) if the unborn baby is 20 weeks or greater. Congress has affirmed they will pass this bill - despite President Obama's own resolve to veto it. Sean Cardinal O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston and Chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, urges all to support this common-sense reform. Recalling the horrific criminal case last year of abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell, convicted of murder and other crimes committed in the course of providing abortions, he states that many Americans are "repulsed by the callous and barbarous treatment of women and children in Gosnell's clinic and in other clinics that abort children after 20 weeks". As eyewitnesses testified, "children were born alive and crying or screaming in pain, until their lives were intentionally and deliberately ended". Much like the supposition "If a tree falls in the woods and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?", we cannot hear a baby's scream in utero, but we cannot ignore the compelling scientific evidence now available that demands of us to protect the child from this abhorrent and torturous fate. This game was .4 seconds from being one of the all-time greatest comeback wins in St Lawrence History. The Mustangs jumped out early to a 7-2 lead but the scoring went cold before half and the boys were down 14-7 at the break. St. Lawrence continued their cold shooting in the third quarter and found themselves down 27-10 going into the 4th quarter. That's when the boys woke up and began a whirlwind of basketball play. The Mustangs began to chip away at the lead and found themselves up 1 with two made free throws with just under 12 seconds remaining. The Irish took the ball out of a time out with under 7 seconds to go. They managed a deep three that resulted in a weak side fight for the ball. St. Lawrence came down with the ball in a tie up under the basket and heard the whistle. The official under the basket was calling for a jump ball, but was over turned from the half court official who called a hold on the Mustang player. The double bonus situation sent St. Pat’s to the line to shoot two shots, with .4 seconds left. Ice cold veins prevailed, as their player sank both, for a one point Mustang loss. St. Lawrence was fueled in scoring from Miles Kreger with 12 points, 8 points each from Justin Cieslak and Nick Severyn, Conner Popa (3 pts.) and a bucket from Jack O’Donnell. The 5/6th Grade JV Girls #1 continued their fine play, avenging an earlier season defeat to St. Patrick, White Lake #1, with a hard fought 19-11 win. This improved their League record to 4-2 while putting them at 7-6 overall. The girls jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first getting baskets from Mia Iacona, Alaina Mancini, and Lauren Gumma, with the defense playing outstanding as well in keeping St Pat's off the scoreboard. The scoring slowed down in the 2nd quarter with the Mustangs only connecting on three free throws to go into half time with a 10-4 lead. The girls only managed another 3 points in the third off a basket from Iacona and a free throw from Breann Piechocki while the Irish closed the lead to 13-9 heading into the 4th. Two big free throws from Fiona Gasperoni, a late bucket from Mancini, and continued outstanding defense, which only allowed the visitor’s one basket in the 4th quarter, closed out big win. The 7/8th Grade Varsity Boys #3 got back on the winning way Saturday 1/24, by beating League foe Our Lady Star of the Sea #2, 33-7. The Mustangs (2-4) were led in this contest by the play of their big men. Tony Chammas led in scoring with 7 points (4 rebounds), Alex Suminski (5 pts., 6 Rebounds), Tommy Mansour (2 pts., 2 blocks, 3 rebounds), Jay Masi (2 pts., 2 rebounds). Guards Nick Daher (4 pt., 3 steals), Dominic Balice (4 pts., 2 steals) Adam Randazzo (2 pts.) and Anthony Rayes (2 pts., 2 rebounds) also contributed. Our two Varsity teams bowl every Saturday morning beginning at 10 am and encourage everyone to come out and support them. There are 7 returning from last season and three new-comers, making up the two Varsity teams. Varsity #1 consists of Sophia Alba, A.J. Konarzewski, Anthony Marcopoli, Andrew Rowinski, and David Balanon, all back from last season. Varsity # 2 members are: Noah Jusko and Giovanni Polsinelli, back from last season and new-comers Erin Vanderbrink, Adrian Carreon, and Pietro Pizzo. In week one, both teams bowled well. Varsity #1 won seven points, winning the Baker game with a great team effort. They continued by taking games 2 and 3 from St. Mary, Mt. Clemens. Rowinski and Alba led in game 1, with Konarzewski and Marcopoli showing the way in game 2. Varsity #2 took the Baker game on their way to win 4 points from St. Thecla, losing game 2 despite Vanderbrink bowling an excellent 124! She led the team with a 145 in game 3, but lost totals by only 12 pins. It was a great team effort! Week 2, 1/17, saw Varsity #1 win the Baker game against St. Isaac Jogues. Despite Marcopoli bowling a fine 158 game, these Mustangs loss game 1. Game 2 was also a loss that week but by a close margin. The Chargers team bowled over their average and had a big handicap. The days result left Varsity #1 with a 9-5 record. Varsity #2 bowled against St. Anne in week two, taking all seven points, including a Baker game of 122! Jusko led the way in both games 2 and 3. The sweep of points improved their record to 11-3. Last weekend in week 3 on 1/24, Varsity #1 bowled a very good team from Guardian Angel, who were 14-0 after two weeks, possessing the Division High Team average. The Mustangs lost a very close Baker game, and then two very good games were bowled by both teams. Game one was close all the way with Angels holding a small lead after 8 frames. The Mustangs came back in the 9th and both teams finished strong. The final score, Mustangs and Angels tied at 819! Game 3 was again a very well bowled game and again very close, all the way to the 10th frame. St. Lawrence finished strong and won the game by 14 pins. The 4 points they took brought their record up to 13-8. For a complete listing of upcoming games, please go to our website at www.mightymustangs.com.
