Jupiter Medical Center staff provided health and wellness information as well as conducted a number of healthcarerelated lectures at the event. Our partnerships with the Mandel Jewish Community Center – Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter High School are truly impactful. It is through these great collaborations that our tradition of safeguarding the wellness of our community will continue well into the future. Mandel Jewish Community Center at Palm Beach Gardens Campus Jupiter Medical Center's partnership with the Mandel Jewish Community Center (JCC) of the Palm Beaches enhances our ability to provide highly personalized health, wellness and fitness programs out in the community. As the exclusive healthcare partner at the JCC’s Palm Beach Gardens campus, Jupiter Medical Center has provided a full-time, certified, onsite health education specialist who serves as a dedicated resource for members’ health and wellness needs. She helps adults create wellness action plans, keeps them on track with their health goals and, should the need arise, acts as a liaison to the wealth of clinical resources available through Jupiter Medical Center. Jupiter High School’s Jupiter Medical Center Academy We foster an interest in health professions through the Jupiter Medical Center Academy. The program offers Jupiter High School students an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a variety of health care professions through monthly lectures, job-shadowing and mentoring. Teens interested in a health career gain first-hand access and insight into the industry. The Academy fosters development of leadership skills, personal growth, and essential skills required for career success. Acting as a stepping stone to a career in health, the program broadens learning opportunities and reflects the diverse opportunities in health occupations. Students rotate through departments of the Medical Center throughout the year to shadow physicians and team members. There are 330 students currently enrolled in the Jupiter Medical Center Academy. These are just some of the learning tracks available to students: Allied Health Assistant This group of students visits the Medical Center for two hours each week for 32 weeks, rotating through clinical areas such as Pre-Op, OR, Post-Op, Labor & Delivery, Cardiac Rehab, Respiratory, Radiology, GI Lab, Lab, Occupational Health, Rehabilitation, Cancer Center, Bio Tech, Cardiology and Pain Management. Those AEDs were put to good use when one of the patrons of the Theatre experienced a cardiac event. The AED was used on the patron, who went on to be treated at Jupiter Medical Center, and is living proof that access to AEDs can save a life! Diabetes Education & Outpatient Nutrition Services Diabetes is an epidemic in our nation. Jupiter Medical Center is dedicated to helping people master diabetes self-management. Although the Diabetes Education and Outpatient Nutrition Program operates at a negative margin financially, we recognize its intangible value and support the continuation of its efforts. Our two diabetes educators, Siobhan Gross, RN, BSN, CDE and Yolanda Torres, RN, LDN, CDE, spend one day each month at MyClinic, a facility that provides free medical care to eligible adults in need. They also teach courses each month to men and women at the El Sol Neighborhood Resource Center. Diabetes doesn’t just impact adults; it is a growing problem for young people. Our team trains more than 200 school nurses in Palm Beach County, which in turn reaches more than 170,000 students each year. We provide free blood glucose testing at health fairs and events throughout the year, and participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes. The Wellness in Motion bus appears at businesses, health fairs, events and residential communities, making it more convenient than ever to receive a mammogram, vascular screening, health risk assessment panel, DEXA heel (osteoporosis) screening or vital health information. Through the Wellness in Motion initiative, Jupiter Medical Center provided tremendous outreach throughout our community in fiscal year 2014, including: Mobile mammography provided at: Health fairs, festivals and screening events: Jupiter Community Center Harvest Festival at Riverwalk Palm Beach Gardens Green Market Pink Event at Tequesta Terrace Florida Power & Light Key to the Cure Comcast Cable Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Florida Department of Health El Sol Art Fest Palm Beach County Schools Hobe Sound Christmas Parade St. Lucie County School District Hobe Sound Art Festival Palm Beach County Department of Transportation Martin County Board of Commissioners Health Fair Boynton Beach YMCA Palm Beach County Firefighters Health Fair Hospice of West Palm Beach Village of Wellington Health Fair Town of Palm Beach Palm Beach County Department of Transportation Health Fair Village of Tequesta Fit Time Family Event at Allamanda Elementary School Pink Strydes Event at Duffy’s in West Palm Beach City of Palm Beach Gardens Health Fair Spring Training Event at Roger Dean Stadium Health & Wellness Expo at Diamond Elementary School Port St. Lucie Centennial Event GE Health Fair St. Ignatius Church Scripps Florida Health Fair St. Helen Church St. Jude Church St. Anastasia Church St. Juliana Church 6 JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER MyClinic Amidst healthcare reform and the rising cost of care, many in the community still cannot access necessary medical services. MyClinic, a collaboration between Jupiter Medical Center and three community partners, offers free primary care and a dental referral program to the uninsured and underinsured in our community. In addition to providing imaging and lab services at no charge to registered MyClinic patients, the Medical Center provides administrative support in information technology, marketing, facilities development, finance and overall project management. MyClinic is staffed exclusively by licensed volunteer providers who generously donate their time and expertise. Prior to the official opening of MyClinic in January 2014, the clinic operated on a smaller scale as the collaborative Jupiter Volunteer Clinic. Since its inception, Jupiter Volunteer Clinic, and now MyClinic, became a medical home to more than 650 registered patients who accounted for approximately 1,800 visits to date. MyClinic is open three half-days per week. An estimated 45 patients per week are seen free of charge. Philanthropy At Jupiter Medical Center, we take pride in providing world-class medicine. Thanks to the generosity of our philanthropic supporters, we have been here for our community for more than 35 years— delivering quality care and services for every patient. Our donors help us to: Acquire advanced technology Pursue research and new treatments for life threatening illnesses and diseases Care for the needy in our community Provide advanced training and medical education for health professionals Enhance the wellbeing of the individuals and the whole community we serve In 2014, the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation hosted three major events that resulted in $1,192,269. In keeping with our not-for-profit mission, these funds will be used to enhance the Medical Center's programs and services for the greater good. Jupiter Medical Center is an institution built by the community, for the community. Our family of philanthropic supporters help ensure that the Medical Center remains a strong organization capable of continuing to provide a range of important health care services and community benefits. Volunteering More than 600 volunteers, managed through the Jupiter Medical Center's Auxiliary, work tirelessly for the benefit of the Medical Center and its patients. In 2014, they served nearly 100,000 hours; a donation of time and talent that is valued at more than $2 million. Auxiliary members volunteer in the hospital and outpatient facilities, as well as the Pavilion, gift shop and thrift shop. The Auxiliary also operates Jupiter Medical Center’s complimentary Motor Aid service, a lifeline to many of our community members who cannot drive themselves to their Jupiter Medical Center physician offices or outpatient appointments. Last year, our drivers traveled more than 46,600 miles, transporting over 600 patients to and from their appointments. Last year, the Auxiliary raised and donated $466,000 to Jupiter Medical Center, and the thrift shop generated $523,732 in revenues. The Auxiliary funded the construction of the new gift shop and chapel, and donated $200,000 for the renovation of the south lobby of the hospital; renovations will begin in January 2015. Team Members Giving Back Our team members have always been generous and quick to respond when asked to help a worthy cause. In 2014, team members volunteered at the annual “Friends of Jupiter Beach” clean-up effort, Toys for Tots, Big Heart Brigade, School Supply Drive, Habitat for Humanity, Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, and more. Our team members hold back-to-school drives each year and donate thousands of items including back packs and clothing to area schools. They also donate items to send to military personnel serving overseas. Team members participate in various walks and fundraise for area charities including the March of Dimes Walk for Babies, the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes, and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. Many physicians and team members participate in volunteer clinics, providing much needed healthcare to those in need. In this day and age when people are concerned with saying the right thing, we are more concerned with doing the right thing. Our physicians and team members set out to do just that on a daily basis - by giving back to the community they serve. Members of Jupiter Medical Center’s leadership team also participate as board members, members, or in an advisory capacity to many local organizations including the American Cancer Society Palm Beach County Chapter, Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce, MyClinic, Honda Classic, Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, Maltz Jupiter Theatre and Kiwanis Club of Jupiter/Tequesta. JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER Community Benefit Our status as a not-for-profit organization means that every penny of profit we earn from hospital services, tax-deductible donor contributions and fundraising efforts are reinvested in the Medical Center to enhance our capacity to deliver high quality care to the communities we serve. We do not return profits to shareholders as taxable organizations do. As a 401(c)3 not-for-profit organization, Jupiter Medical Center received federal, state and local tax exemptions. However, the Medical Center gives back to the community in excess of our exemptions. In addition, there are taxes Jupiter Medical Center is not exempt from and must pay in its normal course of operations, just as any other business. Jupiter Medical Center serves all patients seeking care, including the economically disadvantaged seeking emergent care through the Jupiter Medical Center Emergency Department. Accordingly, there are services provided at no cost or at reduced cost. Jupiter Medical Center continuously seeks opportunities to identify and meet the health needs in our community. 38.6% 28.7% Charity Care Medicaid Underfunding 4.0% 28.7% Educational Programs, Free Healthcare Screenings, Corporate Sponsorships & Donations Uncompensated Services COMMUNITY SERVICES CONTRIBUTIONS 2014 2013 2012 2011 Charity Care $3.9M $3.3M $5.6M $4.6M Medicaid Underfunding $2.9M $4.3M $4.6M $3.5M Uncompensated Services $2.9M $1.1M $1.0M $1.3M Educational Programs, Free Healthcare Screenings, Corporate Sponsorships & Donations $.4M $.4M $.4M $.3M $10.1M $9.1M $11.6M $9.7M TOTAL CONTRIBUTIONS CO M M U N IT Y BEN EFIT REP O RT Sponsorships and Partnerships W.B.
