The Objective of the Student Convocations
March of Dimes New York State Chapter Student Convocations seek to increase student awareness and interest
in the life sciences and encourage students to pursue studies in related fields. These convocations give New
York's most promising high school students the opportunity to hear and meet outstanding speakers of national
prominence in the fields of science and medicine.

Annual Essay Competition for Students
Guidelines and Directions
The March of Dimes New York State Chapter is pleased to announce the Annual Essay Competition for Students attending
convocations in the New York and Staten Island Divisions. The competition is offered in conjunction with the Annual Student
Convocations which promotes interest in the biomedical sciences among students. All public and private high school students
(9-12 grades) are invited to enter. There are two levels: 1st level for 11th & 12th grades and the 2nd level for 9th & 10th grades.
All entries must be received no later than their submission date by mail. No fax, email or late submission will be accepted. Only
High School student within the area can enter the essay contest. The student essay winners will be notified prior to the
convocation and will be expected to attend the event. All materials submitted will not be returned and are the property of the
March of Dimes.
NELSON ROSENTHAL STUDENT CONVOCATION
Submission Date: Monday, March 2nd, 2015 by 3:00 pm, see page 5 for submission address. Public or Private High
schools in Brooklyn, Bronx, Long Island, Manhattan and Queens area can apply. Each level will have two (2) winners: First
place award of $400 and a banner recognizing them as a winning school and the second place winners will receive an
honorary award.
ESSAY QUESTION: How can those seeking genetic testing best receive unbiased information and counseling about
different testable conditions, behavioral dispositions and traits?
TINA RUSSO STUDENT CONVOCATION
Submission Date: Friday, March 27th, 2015 by 3:00 pm, see page 8 for submission address. Public or Private High
schools in Staten Island area can apply. Each level will have one (1 ) winner. Winners will receive an award of $250 and their
school will be presented with a banner recognizing them as a winning school.
ESSAY QUESTION: How should we prioritize Laboratory Testing and who should decide the testing algorithms:
doctor, patient, insurers, government?
The prize for the best essay will be awarded to an essay which:

Provides a clearly presented, well-developed response to the question

Answers the question in appropriate essay format, following the directions given in the ‘Essay Format’ section

Provides an accurate and properly listed bibliography, if an outside source of information is used.
ESSAY FORMAT REQUIRED. Any essay missing any of the following information will not be reviewed:

All portions of the essay must be typed.

Each essay must include, on school letter head, a sponsoring letter from the teacher and the school principal
acknowledging their awareness of the student entrant and all rules and stipulations of the competition.

Provide a Cover Page with the title of the essay, author’s name, full home address, name of school, grade, name of
teacher sponsoring the student and the date submitted.

The essay must be five to six-typed page (exclusive of the cover page and bibliography), double-spaced with one inch
margins and a 12 pitch font and page numbering.

Provide a bibliography referencing all work. List at least 2-3 references in addition to the textbook. Format references
according to the Little Brown Handbook or comparable format, available in school or local libraries

Faxed, emailed or late submissions WILL NOT be accepted.
