This past year we had a pair of these birds with two baby "cygnets". Mute Swan Trumpeter Swan Mute swans are among our largest birds averaging 20-25 pounds with a wing span of nearly 7 feet. Both sexes have a black face patch with a fleshy knob on the forehead that overlays an orange bill. The Trumpeter Swan, a rarer species in our area, has an all black bill. These birds are not really mute - they, grunt, snort, or hiss to communicate, especially if threatened. Their diet consists of submerged aquatic vegetation and they can consume 4-8 pounds of plants daily. In early June, Mute Swans lay an average of 6 eggs at a rate of one egg per day. The eggs hatch 35 days after the last egg is laid. During the nesting and brood rearing-periods mute swans are very territorial. Both males and females are aggressive toward people and other waterfowl within their nesting area. Sometimes their behavior is so aggressive that they will drive other waterfowl out of areas and reports of swan attacks on people, especially small children and users of personal watercraft, are common. Some communities have programs in place to eliminate Mute Swans from their waterways. 9 ~ Workers Appreciation Dinner ~ Work Bee Chairman Dave Chappel got the evening started & handed it over to outgoing President Charlie Stevens who awarded Member of the Year honors to Annie Barbara, and Adam Rott. The New Member of the Year award went to John MacBeth (left center), and a very deserving Dave Chappel took home the coveted Walger E. Horstman Meritorious Service Award (above). After dinner, the band Radiant Sol kept the room dancing long into the night. 10 CPL CONCEALED PISTOL LICENSE TRAINING st March 21 , 2015 Junior Archery Instructional League Name: _________________________________ (As shown on your driver’s license or MI State ID) Address_________________________________ City & Co._____________________________ MI Zip____________________________________ Phone # _______________________________ Email: _________________________________ Member $75.00 / Non-member $125.00 (Fee non refundable after (March 7, 2015) Make check payable to: Multi-Lakes C. The Winter Skeet & Trap League is having a great season with over 60 shooters!!! A recent Thursday evening was designated as “Hat Night”, which only partially explains some of the oddities seen in a couple of these shots. At the time the top right picture was taken, no one noticed anything unusual, but later someone pointed out the “flameout” seen in the enlargement. The shell is ejecting normally, the gun continues to function normally, but the flames have everyone scratching their heads. 13 My Multi-Lakes W Donn E. Green, CWO, USN, RET here do I begin? How can I tell you? Well, let me preface my humble story with a little information that will help you understand where I am coming from. I am not a Multi-Lakes member nor have I ever been. This is as much about Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan way of life as it is about Multi-Lakes. The time frames, events, and people I talk about will be for information and reference more than for accuracy. My mom and dad both worked and were not involved in clubs of any nature until after I left home to join the military after graduation from Walled Lake H.S. I grew up across from Dodge Park V in Log Cabin Beach on Commerce Lake during the forties and fifties. I began coming to Multi-Lakes in the very early fifties to fish Reed Lake and to be around the club for working bees. I became a Junior Member and participated in many events, matches, etc. There was always work to be done in the early years and there were always many volunteers. It was not uncommon to be waist deep in water helping put the dock out each spring and be rubbing elbows with the club president and not knowing it. It seemed like there was always a clean up or working-bee of some sort going on and many times we would go out and plant seedlings on the property or just clean the club grounds. I do not remember a lot about these early years except that every man I met there treated me, like his own son and I don't ever remember being asked who my dad was or if he was a member. I was truly taken under many wings and mentored everywhere I went, in every thing I did there; they became like family. My folks were friends with the Smale and Graycheck family's who were related to Roy Styles and we always tried to make the annual family picnic that Roy was involved in for numerous years. These picnics were huge, with games and competition for the children all over the grounds down by the lake. There were horseshoe tournaments and some very good pitchers that were club members. My dad and I were very good at pitching horseshoes and one of the highlights of the picnics for us was getting in the tournament. This is where I first met Detroit Tigers great, Dizzy Trout and his son who would come out for the picnics and play horseshoes as well, and the four of us would often play father and son doubles against one another. During the mid fifties, Multi-Lakes hosted Michigan Outdoorama and it would draw competitors from neighboring states as well and was a big event. One of the club members, Arnold Rahn, a long time bar tender and friend of the children encouraged me to compete in the first one. He knew I was an avid fisherman and told me to come over and get into the casting 14 competitions. I entered the "dry fly", "wet fly" fly-casting competitions, and the “3/8 oz” and “5/8oz” plug casting competitions. I had no idea what the competitions were all about, the rules or anything. I walked from home the first day of the first Outdoorama and was just hanging around the dock when a smallish red haired gentleman came up to me and began talking to me and about the competition. He explained the competitions to me and helped me rig my fly outfit for the competition and gave me a few of the hook-less flies needed for the competition. He took me out and showed me how to cast into the 5 casting rings and how the competition was scored. The championship was set up for Class A and B for men and Class C for women and children under 15 years of age. That first year I took first place in three of the four events I entered in Class C and second in the fourth. I saw this gentleman that was so gracious to me giving casting demonstrations up by the clubhouse later in the day and then the next day during the awards ceremonies in the clubhouse. I believe he won one or both Class A flycasting championships and when he was introduced I learned that he was also the many-time world fly-casting champion, Ben Hardesty. This gentleman later became a vice president for the Shakespeare Company and we kept in distant touch with one another. The president of the club for this Outdoorama was Ray Chabot who presented me with my plaques that I still have today and am still very proud of. Unlike the commercial venue of today's Outdoorama, this event was primarily competition and exhibition held at one of Michigan's conservation clubs. There were a handful of us that began a slingshot group in the latter fifties. I cannot remember the member names but Karl Kovak, Mr. Brown, about 6 other men and a couple of women were the first members of the club. The first couple of meetings were in the small bore range but due to conflicts with small-bore competitions, we were forced into the clubhouse. The first night we shot in the clubhouse we stretched one tarp for a backdrop against the East wall. This meeting didn't last too long because Mr. Brown and myself were putting our steel bearings through the tarp into the wood walls. Weldon Payne, the club President at the time frowned upon that and asked that we come up with a better mousetrap so we went to two tarps the following week. I have not shot slingshot since I left the club and have not followed the sport or what it has become today. The slingshots we used back then were made of metal (not sure of what kind) with two cut slots in them and we could buy them though the club. We used two flat, thin rubber strips and a leather pouch with two holes in the ends with the slingshot. The pouch was secured to the bands with small pieces of round rubber bands, wrapped and tied off. Continued nest month… Junior Rifle Age 12 & older. $2.00 You can buy HATS, PATCHES & MORE… ANYTIME!
