Services
Dear Resident Student,
Panther
Central
It is time to begin the housing application process for the 2015-16 school
year. Every resident student must process a housing application in order
to be eligible for the next year’s housing selection process. This
application, along with a $325 housing deposit, is to be completed online
by February 1, 2015. Please take the time to read and understand this
information completely. If you have any questions regarding this process,
please visit or call Panther Central as soon as possible. Panther Central is
located in the main lobby of Litchfield Towers and is open 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. The telephone number is 412-648-1100.
You have received an email with your personalized Housing Information
that indicates whether or not you have a housing guarantee. It also
provides instructions on how to view your Housing Selection Index
Number (“lottery number”) and how to create your personalized housing
PIN number. For those who will be selecting/choosing a roommate, you
will need to know your roommate’s seven-digit student identification
number, also known as the PeopleSoft number, as well as his or her meal
plan choice for next year. You will also need to share your personalized
housing PIN number with your selected roommate(s).
The room selection process is conducted online. The room selection
dates for guaranteed juniors-to-be are March 4, 5, and 6, 2015. The room
selection dates for guaranteed sophomores-to-be are March 17, 18, 19,
and 20, 2015. Please refer to pages 15 and 16 in this book for the date and
time you will need to log on our website and submit a request for a
specific room. Your assigned date and time is the earliest you may
access the selection site. The online selection program will remain
accessible through 8:00 p.m. on March 20, 2015, for all guaranteed
students who did not select an assignment on their appropriate selection
day. Changes to your selection can be made up to 8:00 p.m. on March 20,
2015. Should you make an error or change your room preference after
March 20, 2015, you may come to Panther Central to request a change to
your selection. Any changes made will be based upon room availability at
the time of the change.
For more information on the selection process, visit pc.pitt.edu.
RESIDENTIAL Options
Eligible upperclass students who wish to live on campus in
University housing have two options, residence halls or apartmentstyle accommodations. Please read below for more information
on each.
Residence halls
Most resident students live in the 15 residence halls located
throughout campus. The University provides every student living
in a residence hall with the fundamental amenities of contemporary student life, from furniture to cable HD TV, and online network
access, wired and wireless. Every student living in a residence
hall is required to purchase a meal plan for both the fall and spring
terms.
There are both regular rooms and suite-style rooms in residence
halls. If you desire suite-style accommodations, in addition to your
housing application, you must submit a Suite and Apartment-style
Application Sheet by February 9, 2015.*
*Please see page 12 for more information.

accommodations may purchase a meal plan, although they are not
required to do so.

Application Sheet by February 9, 2015.*
*Please see page 12 for more information.
Important information
The following pages provide a brief overview of each residence hall
and the apartment-style accommodations. You also will find
explanations of housing eligibility and housing guarantees in this
brochure. The Panther Central Web site, pc.pitt.edu, has additional
information on University housing and the housing selection
process. Please refer to pages 15 and 16 in this book for the date and
time you will need to log on to the Web site and submit a request for

HOUSING ELIGIBILITY AND GUARANTEE
HOUSING ELIGIBILITY AND GUARANTEE
Prospective freshmen who are admitted for the fall term and pay their $300 enrollment
fee by May 1 and their $325 housing deposit by their designated due date are guaranteed
on-campus housing. This guarantee is good for three years, provided that all housing
application and deposit deadlines for each subsequent year have been met. You
received an e-mail to your pitt.edu e-mail account that states whether or not you are
a guaranteed student. If you believe you are entitled to a pending housing guarantee
but find your Housing Information e-mail does not state such, contact Panther Central
immediately. To keep your housing guarantee valid for the next year (2015-16) you must
meet the housing application processing and deposit deadline of February 1, 2015.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A PENDING HOUSING GUARANTEE
Freshmen who currently live in the residence halls and who, upon entering the
University, paid their tuition deposit on or before May 1, 2014, have a pending guarantee.
Sophomores who currently live in the residence halls or apartment-style
accommodations and who, upon entering the University, paid their tuition deposit on or

Panther Central by February 1, 2015 of your intent to reside in the unit. Your housing
deposit and application must be received at Panther Central by February 1, 2015.
6
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A GUARANTEE?
For any senior or other nonguaranteed student, we encourage you to submit your housing
application and deposit payment by the due date of February 1, 2015, so that if beds do become
available, you will be eligible to secure one. Once the online selection process is complete,
Panther Central will determine availability of beds and will contact you through your University

sent from the Office of the University Registrar. Please follow up with that office to verify the
validity of your number. Students will be contacted when space becomes available. We
encourage non-guaranteed students to sign up for the housing wait list as the deposit is fully
refundable if you do not get placed in on-campus housing. If you have any questions about the
housing waitlist process please contact Panther Central at 412-648-1100.
HOW DO I PROCESS MY HOUSING APPLICATION?
HOUSING ELIGIBILITY AND GUARANTEE
HOUSING ELIGIBILITY AND GUARANTEE

The payment of the deposit and the submission of the receipt and housing application must be

exceptions, your submission of the housing application and participation in the room selection/
assignment process indicate your contractual agreement to remain in housing residence for fall
term 2015 and spring term 2016.
7
WHAT IS THE HOUSING SELECTION INDEX NUMBER?
You will find a housing selection index number via the Housing Selection Process e-mail sent to
your University e-mail account. This is a unique number within the range of the total number of
current residents and is randomly generated for each current resident student.
WHAT IS THE HOUSING PERSONALIZED HOUSING PIN?
HOUSING SELECTION INDEX NUMBER/WAIT LIST

your group will need to create a personalized housing PIN number. The person selecting the

OTHER GUARANTEED STUDENTS/RETENTION OF ROOMS, SUITES, AND APARTMENT-STYLE ACCOMMODATIONS
OTHER GUARANTEED STUDENTS/RETENTION OF ROOMS, SUITES, AND APARTMENT-STYLE ACCOMMODATIONS
ARE ANY OTHER STUDENTS GUARANTEED HOUSING?
In addition to the incoming freshmen who are guaranteed housing, there are other categories of students
who are guaranteed housing, provided they pay the $325 deposit and process their housing application by
the due date of February 1, 2015. These include 2015–16 resident assistants, full-scholarship athletes,
chancellor’s scholars, and students with physical disabilities. Your academic class and housing selection
index number will be used to determine the order in which you will select your room.
OTHER GUARANTEED STUDENTS’ ROOM SELECTION SCHEDULE
Other guaranteed students will select their rooms according to their academic class online at my.pitt.edu.
Refer to Schedule A or B at the back of this brochure for your specific selection time based on your housing
selection index number. More information is available at pc.pitt.edu.
AM I ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ROOM RETENTION OR
SELECTION PROCESS?
You are eligible if you paid the $325 deposit, met the housing application deadline, and have both a housing
guarantee and a valid housing selection index number.
CAN I REMAIN IN MY CURRENT ROOM?
As long as you are eligible to participate in room retention, you can retain your current room assignment by
participating in the room retention process, which takes place online, February 10, 2015. After February 10,
the room retention process will be suspended until February 19. On February 19, those students who may not
have won a suite/apartment-style bid may choose to retain their current room. The room retention process
will resume online from February 19-24. You must officially reside in the room you wish to retain. Please
reference page 13 of this book for a list of rooms that are excluded from the room retention process. The
University reserves the right to designate currently occupied rooms as unavailable.
If you retain your room, you will not be eligible to participate in room or suite/apartment-style selection.
11
CAN I SELECT A NEW ROOM?
If you are eligible to participate in room selection, then you can select a new room assignment by following
the room selection process for your academic class.
RETENTION OF ROOMS, SUITES, AND APARTMENT-STYLE ACCOMMODATIONS
RETENTION OF ROOMS, SUITES, AND APARTMENT-STYLE ACCOMMODATIONS
AM I ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SUITE AND APARTMENT-STYLE
RETENTION OR SELECTION?
You are eligible for suite and apartment-style retention or suite and apartment-style selection if you
have a housing guarantee, have paid the $325 housing deposit, and have met the housing application
processing deadline.
SUITE AND APARTMENT-STYLE RETENTION
Suite and apartment-style retention requires that at least one person must be returning next fall and must have
a housing guarantee. Returning suitemates and apartmentmates will be responsible for recruiting additional
persons necessary for 100 percent occupancy. All persons must have a valid housing guarantee at the time of
applications.
If these criteria are met, then you can retain your suite or apartment by following the suite and apartment-style
retention process. The University reserves the right to designate currently occupied suites/apartments as
unavailable for retention.
YOU MUST HAVE FULL OCCUPANCY IN ORDER TO RETAIN YOUR SUITE
OR APARTMENT
Individual cancellations after retention/selection could invalidate assignments for the remaining occupants.
Any suite or apartment occupant canceling after April 15, 2015, will forfeit the $325 housing deposit. Panther
Central retains the right to fill suite or apartment vacancies.
WHEN AND WHERE DOES SUITE AND APARTMENT-STYLE RETENTION
TAKE PLACE?
If you are interested and eligible in retaining your suite or apartment-style accommodation, the suite and
apartment-style retention process will take place online at my.pitt.edu on February 10, 2015. To access the
online suite and apartment-style retention process, visit my.pitt.edu, click on the My Resources tab, select
Panther Central, then click on the Housing e-Services link on the Panther Central portal page.
SUITE AND APARTMENT-STYLE SELECTION
To be eligible for suite and apartment-style selection, the number of students must equal the designated suite
or apartment capacity. A student may only participate as a member of one group. Any student found to be a part
of more than one group voids suite selection for the members of all associated groups.
Each group is required to complete a Suite and Apartment-style Selection Application Sheet and to nominate a
representative. The application sheets will be available at Panther Central on January 9, 2015, and are due back
at Panther Central no later than February 9, 2015.
* Important: If students currently living together as part of a suite want to retain the suite but no longer want to
live together, all students in the suite must follow the normal Suite Selection process.
A bid process is used to determine suite and apartment-style selection based upon the information provided
on the Suite and Apartment-style Selection Application Sheet. Each student of the suite or apartment group
is given points for his or her class standing as follows: juniors = 3 points, sophomores = 2 points. Panther
Central determines the selection order among the groups based upon the highest bid total. The lowest housing
selection index number in each group is used to break ties among groups. On February 18, 2015, at 5 p.m.,
Panther Central will post a schedule at the office and online at pc.pitt.edu indicating when each group is
scheduled for suite and apartment-style selection.
12
Students who are unable to participate in the suite and apartment-style selection process may participate in room
selection with their appropriate class.
LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES
After completing the housing application online, you will be redirected to your previously indicated Living Learning
Community application. When you select an accommodation in a special living community, you must sign an
agreement to abide by the established guidelines and programs of that community. You can obtain more detailed
information regarding the criteria for the special living communities from the Office of Residence Life, located on
the ninth floor of the William Pitt Union, or online at reslife.pitt.edu.
Note: Students interested in living in the University of Pittsburgh Honors College Community in Forbes
Craig Apartments or Pennsylvania Hall can learn more about this option and download an application at
honorscollege.pitt.edu. Students who have been approved to live in Forbes Craig Apartments or Pennsylvania Hall
will be contacted directly by the University Honors College with detailed room selection instructions.
