St. Andrews Events Heat Up
Spring semester continues at St. Andrews University with a wide assortment of events
from athletics, to equestrian, to the Scottish Heritage Symposium.
St. Andrews
Special Events
Symposium
Originally founded in 1989 as a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the coming of the
first group of Highland Scots to North Carolina, the “Scottish Heritage Symposium” provides an unparalleled opportunity for persons interested in Scottish and Scottish-American
history and culture to learn from top scholars in their fields. This year’s symposium will be
held March 20 – 22.
The Symposium provides a forum for study and interaction for anyone interested in Scottish
history, culture, and tradition. For any questions, please call Bill Caudill at 910-277-5236
or email [email protected] - reservations are suggested.
Equestrian
St. Andrews University features one of the premier collegiate equestrian centers in the
country. Consequently, we are fortunate to host many of the marquee college events.
Golf Scotland County
On February 14th and February 21st, the center will host IHSA Hunter Seat Shows –
including the Regional Finals on the 21st. Hunter seat involves both riding and jumping.
On March 21st, the IDA Dressage Show will be held at St. Andrews. Made popular by the
Olympics, dressage is a program where the horse and rider are expected to perform from
memory a series of predetermined movements and steps. Whereas Hunter Seat would be
considered athletic, Dressage is more artistic.
February Events
The spring schedule at the Equestrian Center is culminated with the ANRC National Championships from April 14th – 19th. This event brings all of the disciplines together (think of it
as the decathlon of equestrian events).
For more information on all of the events including times, contact the Equestrian Center at
910-276-7771 or [email protected]

Spring Means Golf in Scotland County
In the Carolinas, winter is breaking and time to head outdoors. In Scotland County that
means the Lumber River, the bike trails, a stroll through the woods (or St. Andrews’ campus)
and, most of all, the golf courses.
St. Andrews
Special Events
Our Scottish forbears weren’t all work and no play. Along with their pipes and tartans, they
brought their fascination with a little white ball and a bag full of clubs. But there’s a reason
why golf’s American heritage is laden with images of the Sandhills region.
The early spring in Scotland County provides much the same inspiring scenery as our rather
more well-known neighbor to the north – namely, verdant pine trees with an understory of
azalea and dogwood. Against this backdrop, golf course designers have laid out challenging
links to test your skills while you enjoy a game with your foursome on a Saturday.
