ADMINISTRATIVE NOTES
ESU 16 REGULAR BOARD MEETING
!The Board of Directors of Educational Service Unit No. 16
met for their regular monthly board meeting on January 20,
2015 at the ESU 16 Central Office in Ogallala, Nebraska.
Action items on the agenda were as follows: 1) The board
recorded an absence for Lewellyn Frey, and Bud Jasnoch. 2)
Board President Dayton Reichman led the board in honoring
District 5 Representative, Alan Little, for his service to the
ESU 16 board. 3) Newly elected odd-numbered district
representatives took the oath of office. 4) Board President
Dayton Reichman appointed Jack Tucker, Judy Thompson,
and Mel McNea to a candidate selection committee for
Election District 5. 5) The board unanimously voted to retain
all current office holders including President, Dayton
Reichman; Vice President, Jack Tucker; Secretary Myron
“Bud” Jasnoch; and Treasurer, Stephanie Armour. 6) The
board authorized Administrator, Margene Beatty; President,
Dayton Reichman; Vice President, Jack Tucker; Secretary,
Bud Jasnoch; and Treasurer, Stephanie Armour to sign bank
transactions on behalf of ESU 16. 7) The board approved the
committee appointments as amended. 8) The board named all
banks listed as depositories for 2015. 9) The board accepted
the car bid from Jerry Remus Chevrolet in the amount of
$12,683.00 with trade-in. 10) The board moved discussion
item F1 to an Action Item. 11) The board accepted Calendar
Option 1 for the 2015-2016 school year.
The next Regular Board meeting of Educational Service
Unit No. 16 has been scheduled for 12:30 p.m. MT on
Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the ESU 16 Central Office
in Ogallala, Nebraska.

About the Presenter:
Jill Kuzma, M.A., CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist whose scope of research and practice
spans sixteen years working exclusively with individuals on the autism spectrum, specializing in the areas
of social cognition, social interaction skills, emotion awareness and management, reducing anxiety,
organization, and receptive and expressive language skills. Jill earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Communication/Theater from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Jill is employed full time with the
Apple Valley-Rosemount-Eagan school district (ISD 196) as a Speech-Language Pathologist and Social
Skill Teacher. She also teaches Communication, Social Cognition and Asperger graduate courses for
Hamline Univeristy in St. Paul, MN. Jill speaks to audiences of educators and parents across the country,
known for her energetic presentation style with a primary focus on specific strategies & immediately

Administrators, Special Education and General Education Teachers K-12, Speech Language Pathologists,
Family Members, Paraprofessionals, Community Providers, and Related Service Providers.
About the Workshop:
Participants in this workshop will learn about social/emotional “units” of study with lessons centered
around developing social perspective taking skills, increasing awareness of emotions and associated
non-verbal cues, controlling Impulsive behaviors, and expanding the social awareness skills necessary for
reciprocal friendships and social interactions. Specific units of study outlined include: perspective
taking, conversation skills, sportsmanship, personal space, impulse control/dealing with distractions, and
handling explosive emotions. These units of study incorporate lesson activities utilizing children’s
literature, a variety of visual learning tools, role-play activities, interactive games, Internet resources, and
other technology tools. This workshop also includes a discussion of how social cognitive deficits impact
students socially, emotionally, behaviorally, academic and in the area of organization. Writing IEP
present levels of performance, creating realistic – measurable annual goals, and developing objectives
are also addressed.

CPI RESTRAINT AND SECLUSION INITIAL TRAINING

This training will cover verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques, physical
restraint training. Upon completion of this training, participants will be certified in
CPI’s seclusion and restraint techniques. Catherine Ruhlman and ML Lehman
will be the CPI Certified Trainers.
This training is only open to schools within ESU 16. Must come in school or
district teams of at least 3 including an administrator.
*If your administrator has already been trained in CPI, then they do not have to
attend the initial training.
Cost: $30 per person for lunch and materials. ESU 16 will bill school districts.

CPI NONVIOLENT CRISIS INTERVENTION
RECERTIFICATION TRAINING
For staff members who need to be recertified in CPI.
March 27, 2015
Location: ESU 16 Special Services Center – North Platte, NE
9:00 am – 11:30 am CT
(No Lunch Served)
This training will cover verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques, and a
review of physical restraint training. Upon completion of this training, participants
will be recertified in CPI’s seclusion and restraint techniques. Catherine
Ruhlman and ML Leman will be the CPI Certified Trainers.
Cost:
$10 per person for materials. ESU 16 will bill school districts.

Spectrum Disorders Team and Presents:
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Demystified
Presented by: Central Region ASD Team Members

Count on this training to clarify that, far from being too technical, ABA is the system of
applying scientifically derived processes to support learning. Surprise yourself by finding
out how often you use this set of principles and how to maximize the results of your
teaching. This in-service will provide an overview of the basic principles of ABA
including: errorless learning, discrete trial training, reinforcement, pairing, prompting,
fading, chaining, error correction, and data collection.
This workshop is intended for classroom teachers, paraeducators, speech/language
pathologists, resource specialists, school psychologists, parents, and other professionals
who work with individuals who are on the autism spectrum.

The Artist in Schools/Communities Residency Program is a project of the Nebraska Arts Council
and is funded directly by the Nebraska Legislature. The council coordinates artist residencies in
the areas of visual arts, crafts, dance, drama, creative writing, photography and film-making,
and music for schools wanting to supplement the regular curriculum. These enriching arts
experiences present an opportunity for students of all ages to develop new avenues of individual

The goals of improvement are based upon the needs emerging from the data;

For the past 31 years, SCIENCE OLYMPIAD has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots
assembly of science teachers is now one of the premiere science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous,
standards-based challenges to nearly 7,000 teams in 50 states. Science Olympiad’s ever-changing line-up of
events in all Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines exposes students to practicing
scientists and career choices, and energizes classroom teachers with a dynamic content experience.
OUR MISSION
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality
of K-12 science education, increasing student interest in science, creating a technologically
literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both
students and teachers. These goals are achieved by participating in Science Olympiad
