The Cricket Chronicle - Profile Of The Week
Tea Tree Gully’s benchmark opening batter
leading the one day kings towards two-day glory
To have one good year is something everyone could be happy
about but to continue that one good year across multiple and
see your team become one of Grade Cricket’s most competitive
beasts is something very special. Tea Tree Gully’s Tim Evans has
done just that and he’s done it in style.
Whether it’s the individual success of being the number one
batter in one day Grade cricket for the previous three seasons
or seeing his team win multiple T20 titles, Evans has been an
instrumental figure.
After averaging mid to low 20s before 2011, Evans spoke about
how he improved his game and unfortunately there’s no magic
potion or gypsy spell that does it.
“I guess it just comes with a little bit of experience and being a
senior player where you want to take a little bit more
responsibility. I guess with that experience you understand your
own game and the game itself.”
Evans spoke at length to highlight the support staff and the
structures they work in across many levels. “I’ve had some good
advice and having good coaches in place have assisted my game
Tim Evans trademark flick off the legs
a fair bit, in particular the coaching structure at Tea Tree Gully
and now being exposed to the next level in regard to the Emerging Redbacks program must play some sort
of part.”
It’s the old cliché but when one door closes, another opens and Evans spoke about a particular moment
in his career that he believed played a huge role in shaping him into the player he is today.
“We’ve got a close relationship with the guys at Tea Tree Gully having grown up there since 12 years of
age and even at A Grade level there was a period where my first 5 years of A Grade playing as a 16,17 year
old going through we lost quite a few more senior A Grade players, so there was a youngish core like
Timmy Davey and Matt Weaver and so forth. We learnt the game itself off each other in that
environment.”
As the years have passed, it’s clear Evans has confidence in his game as he digressed how he enjoys taking
the game on, given his position of opening the batting.
(Continued Next Page)
The Cricket Chronicle - Profile Of The Week (cont.)
It’s also clear he’s not afraid of a task as he eagerly
awaits every challenge the opposition may throw at
him. “I like to think that when I’m put under pressure,
I just enjoy that challenge and don’t view it so much as
a burden because I know I’ve got other good players
around me too.”
As he has enjoyed success across many formats, Evans
talked about keeping the game simple as being the key
to his personal and team success and while they’re all
memorable for their own reason, one stands out.
“The favourite one for me in the shorter format of the
game was probably the one-day final we had against
University. We had a reasonable run chase and I hit the
winning runs with my “baby” brother Brad in the last
over. That was probably the best feeling I had.”
Despite all the success, there still remains one on the
radar for Evans. “There’s still that box we need to tick
as far as Tea Tree Gully is concerned and that is we
haven’t won a flag in the two day comp since 95/96 so
as a playing group we’re desperate to get that.”
Evans’ success hasn’t gone unnoticed as he was the
12th man for the Redbacks one day team.
It was a profound experience that opened his eyes into
what professionalism really means and with what’s
expected in a professional environment.
Tim Evans (helmet still on) celebrating with “baby”
brother Brad in the one day premiership over Adelaide
University
It was also contagious as he said he’s ready to take
any opportunity given to him. “I certainly wouldn’t
say no, it’s about doing something with that
opportunity given and I’d feel I’m in a pretty good
space and I’ve had pretty good feedback where I
am individually.”
It won't matter who he's playing for, the game of
Cricket will be the winner out of Tim Evans'
performances.

South Australian Womens Cricket - The Golden Age
With Denis Brien as the state coach and
Yorke Peninsula product Andrea
McCauley as the on-field leader, South
Australia women’s cricket had its first
and to this point only golden era,
culminating in a third title in four year in
Canberra during January, 1995.
This month marks the 20th anniversary
of this exceptional summer, where the
South Australian’s were favourites to win
the title and delivered in emphatic style.
There was some irony, when this year’s
Women’s National Cricket League final
was played on Sunday, January 25 in
Sydney, the two opposing coaches,
McCauley (Scorpions) and Joanne
Broadbent (NSW Breakers) were the SA
girls captain and vice captain two
decades ago.
To set the scene before Brien took over
the role in the late 1980s, SA had one just
two titles, a first in 1951-52 and the other
in 1979-80.
Since he finished this role, the trophy
case has been barren. An astute man,
who understood that women needed
different coaching methods and
philosophies to men, Brien ran a
professional and innovative program
even by today’s modern standards.
Having contacts at the SACA he was able
to gain turf wickets on Adelaide number
2 ground, one night per week and to use
that ground for fielding on Friday nights
at no charge, thanks to long time curator
Les Burdett.

Championships.

“Back then the selection of a squad
of thirteen was made by holding
net trials,” Brien explained. “This
was difficult at first as less than 20
players would be available comprised two groups - those with
national aspirations and the few
who wanted to take a cricket
holiday. After selection the
approach was to work on technical
skills and gradually build self
confidence and mental toughness”
he continued.
Part of the strategy was to have
one or two games against men’s
teams, with the ideal proving to
be the State Under 15’s side or a
Club Under 17 team.”
“As the Championship was held
over two weeks with a round
robin of one-day matches
followed by two-day knock out
finals, the goal was to have the
players peak at semi-final time
and achieve a second or third
place spot to avoid the top team
“A program was set which was in the semi and thus polish the
divided into to two four week skills for the Grand Final”

intensity in the third week.

“However the experience of the players
by 1994-95 saw them finish in top spot.
The key to the success was undoubtedly
the astute leadership of Andrea
McCauley. I rank her alongside Ian
Chappell, Darren Lehmann and David
Hookes as the best captains I’ve been
associated with.”
In this golden period 1991-92 from 199495 South Australia won three national
crowns in four years, with two (Orange
’92
and Canberra ’94) of them
interstate. Skipper McCauley confirmed
the SA team was pretty powerful
combination
for
the
’94-95
championship in the nation’s capital.
“Not often does a South Australia team
in any sport go to a national carnival as
favourites,” she added.
“It was a power packed combination and
‘Rowly’ (Karen Rolton) was on one of her
first tours with us. There were seven of
us - Joanne Broadbent, Lee-anne Hunter,
Tunde Juhasz, Karen Rolton, Isabelle
Tsakiris, Caroline Ward and myself - that
had or would represent Australian during
that period. Melissa Cann and Allyson
Kenelley were also in Australian squads.”
Vice captain Broadbent, who originally
started coached in SA at primary school
level and had Tegan McPharlin has one
of her early junior state squad members,
explained there was a professional shift
and a stability in the SA team under
Denis Brien.

1995-96 National Championships.

“It is important to never forget
where you come from and I was
torn, seeing my team compete
against the SA girls in this year’s
final,” Broadbent confirmed.
SA women’s cricket in that (early
‘90s) period came from humble
beginnings and I remember during
the early part of my career always
being underdogs.
“You can say I have a never say die
attitude - while there is time on the
clock or time left in the game – my
motto is never give up. Having a
winning culture comes from
leadership and ownership.”
“Over our successful period
Denis was a very good people
manager and his guidance was
integral. By ’94-95 I was actually
batting higher in the Australian
team than I was for my state.
My role with both bat and ball
was clearly defined under Denis
and I was seen a finisher, batting
at seven.
“SA had a strong batting
contingent and a number of
quality all-rounders. Also the
strength of club cricket in
Adelaide was a factor as well.

“Winning those titles was quite high on my list of cricket achievements.
Reflecting on that time, it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck
stand up with excitement.”
Only started cricket after High School, in an era were very little
international women’s cricket was played in comparison to today,
Broadbent played 10 tests for her country and 60 one-day internationals.
Footnote - Joanne Broadbent on Andrea McCauley
“Andrea was a straight to the point and you knew exactly where
you stood with her. You built up a lot of resilience under her. On
the field she was a great leader and tactically very good – a big
strength was she knew her game and her team very well.”

Australia during South Australia’s dominant golden era.

The 1994-95 carnival
Denis Brien’s troops won their opening round robin
game against the girls from Queensland after a brilliant
82 from Caroline Ward by 29 runs, but lost their roundtwo fixture NSW by four wickets. Both skipper Andrea
McCauley (31) and the SA run machine for the
remainder of the tournament Lee-anne Hunter (33) got
starts.
Rebounding quickly, on the back of an unbeaten 115
from Lee-anne Hunter they thrashed the ACT by 134
runs in round three, before a hard fought two-wicket
win over Western Australia.
Against their future Grand Final opponent, the bowlers
were frugal, keeping the Vic’s to 121 and the top order
chased down the runs, for the loss of a single wicket in
the final group-stage game. Hunter again led the way
with an unconquered half century and Melissa Cann
was run out, when she was on top of the bowling and
had made 37.
Playing WA in the semi final, SA batted first and had
many contributors in an impressive total of 299.
Hunter at the top of the order again produced, this time
a handsome 79, while Ward made a handy 33.
In the middle order keeper-batsman Tunde Juharz
produced an important 50 and Joanne Broadbent
compiled an impressive 70. Off -spinner Carolyn
Dittmar claimed 3/12 as WA was dismissed for 183,
while teenager Karen Rolton was also a multiple wicket
taker finishing with 2/35.
Day one of the final was washed out, forcing the title to
be decided over a one-day fixture.
Victoria batted first and posted a respectable score of
7/154, but a then 19-year-old Rolton proved she was
going to be a star of the future with a brilliant and
unbeaten 68 to ensure the South Aussies won the title
with six wickets to spare, bringing home the prised Ruth
Preddey Cup.

With Both Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully sitting on 100 points,
you can expect a ripper of a game as both sides will want to
distance themselves from each other.
In a first innings win over Prospect, Sam Wood hit a scorching
88 while Matt Weaver impressed with the ball, claiming match
figures of 3/42 and 2/9. Adelaide put in a brave batting
performance but were left too much to do as they fell short of
Glenegl’s 353. Phillip Neate and Sam Raphael played well to
make 70 and 60 respectively.
Adelaide Senior Coach Damian Kelly said some pivotal
moments cost his side on a day to forget. “We were
disappointed, if we’d battered our overs and batted the whole
day I reckon we would've got the runs. We lost 3 quick wickets
just before lunch, we went from 1/1110 to 4/130 which put us
on the back foot.”
However, he was confident they can turn things around come
this weekend. “One good thing that has happened this year is
we have learnt from our mistakes so I think it’s another thing
about learning how to chase a big score.”
He’s also well aware the importance of this match. “Tea Tree
Gully have a really strong batting line and they’re in the mix
with us so it’s like worth a double point game.”
After having won 3 on the trot, Tea Tree Gully’s Tim Evans
spoke about how well his team is working in sync. “We got a
bit of momentum which is good, it was a funny start to the
season with a draw to start and we were playing well but got
beaten by Woodville who are top. As a group we sat down and
said where want to be and it’s just that winning feeling,
momentum plays a huge part.”
What makes this a dangerous thought for opposition is there’s
still reinforcements to come in to help out.
“Having a reasonably full strength side come back as we’ve
missed Travis Head with his SACA commitment and few others
for other reasons, it’s good to have them back.”
With a full arsenal at their disposal, Evans know his side must
make sure they continue to push themselves in a competitive
league. “At the moment we’re riding the wave but we know
there’s no point in winning a few games here, we want to keep
it going.”

East Torrens and Northern Districts will battle it out at
Campbelltown Oval as both will be looking to get back onto
the winners list. East Torrens fell 5 runs short to Kensington
last week, Ayden McGregor-Baptista hit an important 72
while Moin Ashraf picked up an impressive 4/20 off 17
overs. Northern Districts also fell short in their run chase by
the margin of 42 runs to Adelaide Uni. Chris Duval showed
plenty with the ball, picking up 4/25 off 17 overs as Mark
Cosgrove hit a valuable 35 in testing conditions.
Northern Districts’ star batsmen Trent Burge spoke during
the week about the disappointment from last week. “They
just bowled very tight and we just couldn’t make good
contact on it, from there we just lost too many wickets in a
short time and that put us on the back foot. We just
couldn’t get ourselves back into the game”
From there, Burge spoke about his side embracing their
talent and keeping the game simple by just doing what they
set themselves out to do. “I think at Northern Districts
we’re always aggressive, it’s about hitting our targets that
we set as a group. Last week we didn’t do that and we’re
keen to rectify that this week.”
East Torrens opening bowler Daniel Leigh said how the side
had mixed feelings about such a close loss to Kensington.
“We played ourselves out of it early and then Ayden the
young fella (Baptista-McGregor) stood up and wrestled the
game back and I guess when you’re only 5 runs short you
think you can do the job to get over the line so it was a bit
of hard luck in the end.”
East Torrens have enjoyed another stellar season so far
thanks to a fantastic line up, which has been lead by the
efforts of Michael Cranmer.
“He’s stood up and led the team from the front, he’s
already shown he can do that job and last year he probably
didn’t have the year he would’ve liked but this year he’s
been great.”

Port Adelaide will be looking to hit top form as they return
from their bye, the challenge doesn’t get easy as they’re up
against the league leading Woodville.
It’s been a difficult season so far for the reigning champs,
some indifferent form find them mid table but with some
good performances and results going their way, they have
the potential to remain in contention. Woodville will be
hungry for a win after a close finish saw them draw their
previous match against Sturt. Stuart Coles lead from the
front as he has all year, finishing with 98 while Andrew
Salter chimed in with 3/44 off 20 overs.
After declaring at 341, Senior Coach Sam McNally was
pleased with how his side handled the game “We played a
pretty good game, strategically we think we did well. We
kept our wickets in hand and we were able to put a good
score on the board.”
Despite not getting the win, McNally spoke in high terms
about what his side displayed against some quality
opposition. “To have a batting line up of their calibre 4/40
and 5/70 on the wicket we scored 340 on shows we played
pretty good cricket but unfortunately we couldn’t get the
result in the end. Now we just have to back it up against
Port Adelaide.”
After enduring a frustrating season to date, Port Adelaide
Senior Coach Paul Finnie was honest about where his side
needs to improve.
“It starts with the bat. Excluding games where you get
beaten reasonably convincingly, the close ones we’ve lost
because our guys haven’t gone on with starts.”
Finnie also talked about how the talent is there, all that
remains is taking it to the next level. “The line-up is fairly
aggressive anyway and it’s not so much of a case of getting
in, it’s about going on with it. Lots of 20s and 30s are
happening but that doesn’t win you the game. If that’s one
area to improve in, that’s it.”

Sturt host an in form Kensington at Prince Memorial Oval in
what should be a cracking game between two talented
lineups.
Kensington prevailed in their high placed duel with East
Torrens by a margin of 5 runs, Jake Brown lead on both
fronts after backing up his impressive 72 to claim 4/49 off
16 overs. Sturt put in a resilient performance to draw with
league leading Woodville, Simon Roberts lead a determined
batting performance which finished up at 8/249 at stumps
against the league leading bowling attack.
Sturts Cameron Borgas said despite the draw, there were
plenty of positives for his side. “We were struggling a bit
earlier and then Robbo batted really well, ending up making
90, Greg made a good 30 and Matthew Schlicker made a 49
not out, still not a great result but good to show a bit of
fight in the end.”
With plenty to build on, Borgas spoke about some key
indicators his side would like to meet. “With our bowling,
we need to try to restrict because although we did a
reasonable in the first week we struggled in the second
week and a few early wickets will help. With the bat, if we
can only lose 1 or 2 wickets that will go along way to help
as well.”
Kensington Captain Jake Brown couldn’t stress enough the
importance of his side’s crucial win last week. “It was very
important to stay in touch because we pretty much have to
win every game from now to stay in touch.”
Even with the win, Brown knows there’s still plenty to work
on for his side. “Against East Torrens 5/60 and the two
games before Christmas it was a similar story so we just
need to start well with the stick and protect our middle
order a bit and put a good score on the board because we
think we’ve got a really good attack. If we get over 220 or
230 we have a real good chance of wining”

Adelaide Uni host Glenelg and with these two teams only
separated by 10 points, expect both to lay everything on the
line. Adelaide Uni showed plenty of venom in one of their
most complete performances of the year, Andy Delmont lead
the charge with the bat by making 78 while Joel Logan had the
ball on a string, claiming 5/42 off 20 overs. Glenelg returned to
the winners list with a 73 run win over Adelaide, Alex Carey
got onto his good foot with 80 off just 70 deliveries while
Akash Patel put in one of his best performances for the year to
claim 5/95 off 33 overs.
Adelaide Uni skipper Andy Delmont spoke during the week
and praised his bowling unit for grinding their way out through
the second day of play. “We were pretty happy with how we
restricted them in the third session and they couldn’t score
freely and we managed to keep taking wickets.”
If the bowling can continue its good form from last week,
there’ll also be some key inclusions with the bat too. “This
week we got Tom Cooper and Ben Cooper coming back this
week which will help too.” Delmont will also be hoping
everything can click into gear in front of an important time for
his side. “A big win this weekend can set us up for a big
February and a big end to the season.”
After seeing one of his side’s better batting performances,
Glenelg Senior Coach Peter Muggleton was pleased with the
maturity his bowlers displayed “Glenelg can be hard to bowl at
but they kept toiling away and it worked pretty well, Akash
(Patel) bowled well with 5 wickets too.”
Muggleton spoke about Patel’s performance as one that
showed patience and grit to help his team over the line. “He
just stuck at it, we spoke about how we can’t skittle through
them but it was just about being patient.” With Glenelg sitting
out of the top four at the moment, Muggleton knows it’s
about keeping things simple. “We can’t worry too much about
what other people do but if we keep winning we give
ourselves the best chance and Adelaide Uni are a talented side
and there are no easy games.”

Prospect will be looking to put some light into a tough year as
they play Southern Districts. After falling short in their first
innings, Prospect put in a commendable performance of
2/100 in their second innings. Harry Byrnes How lead the way,
hitting a classy 59. For Southern Districts, last week’s missed
opportunity hurt as they find themselves just out of the top 4
after falling 2 runs shy of West Torrens’ 169. On a positive
note Shaun Tanner continued his impressive year with a stoic
42.
In a similar story for his relatively young side, Prospect Senior
Coach Christian Hannah spoke about the learning curve his
side endured last week. “I think we probably just didn’t
handle the conditions very well. We had 4 LBWs which
suggests we didn’t handle the conditions too well and at lunch
we were maybe 5 down and couldn’t recover from that.”
One big need in his side is to have big partnerships that can
sustain an innings. “It’s something we try to stress every game
but unfortunately it’s not happening for us right now.”
One positive though is the bowling which has seen it
overcome many hurdles. “I think our bowling is on the
improve, Sam Miller is probably back to his best and we’ve
had a guy come in called Patty Meanie whose come in and
taken a few wickets here and there and getting use to bowling
at the A Grade level.
For Southern Districts Senior Coach Malcolm Condon, it was a
disappointing drop in form as his side failed to grab the points
they needed. “It was a disappointing result, it shouldn’t have
even been close, we should’ve have won that game
comfortably and it makes our season significantly more
difficult.” The key to improving, according to Condon, is about
realising what challenges are being thrown at you and how to
deal with them.
“It’s about when the conditions aren’t in your favour, it’s
about coming up with alternate plans and options, in the first
week we came up against what you would traditionally get in
A Grade cricket and we need to address that.”

Pooraka batted first and made the most of their 80 overs
and ended the day with a big score on the board, giving
themselves the best possible chance of easily winning the
match. Some good individual efforts have given Pooraka a
first innings score of 8 for 318.
Nobody was able to reach a century for Pooraka however
no less than four players were able to make a half century,
with Jamie Jarrett leading the way with 88 runs. Joining him
were Rocco Illuminato who made 61, Jye Bailey who also
made 61 and Matthew Rogers who made 58. Even without
a century, Pooraka will be pleased that so many of the
batsman were able to make an impact on the scoreboard
and will be confident they can back up with the ball this
weekend and get a victory.
For Woodville South Andrew Peat and Adam Johnson were
both able to pick up 3 wickets, but it wasn’t enough to
restrict the scoring of Pooraka who sit comfortably inside
the top four and look destined to get a home final.
Woodville South have struggled in recent matches and will
need all of their batsmen to be at the top of their games if
they are to chase down the big target and move out of the
relegation spots. This won't be easy as Pooraka try to finish
the match quickly and show the rest of the competition
that they are a serious contender.

With both teams sitting in the middle of the ladder this
week gives them the chance to pick up some valuable
points and move away from some of the other teams
who have had mixed seasons. However, with most of the
season already completed, it is highly unlikely that either
of these teams can pick up enough points to challenge
for a finals position. There is still a lot of pride to play for
however, and both teams will be trying to make the most
of their remaining matches.

Session 1
Top scoring for Goodwood was Elliot Hooper with 89
while Adam Berry made 57. Without a century from one
of these players the score was always going to be lower
than what Goodwood would hope for. However 209 is
easily enough to defend, especially if Goodwood can pick
up some early wickets on day two.
William Dawson was the best bowler for St Peters picking
up a 5 wicket haul and giving up just 32 runs along the
way. St Peters have struggled with the bat in their last
few innings, only managing to make 173 and 148 from
their last two and failing to pick up a win in either efforts.
This will give Goodwood confidence that they can defend
their total while St Peters will be looking to improve on
these disappointing performances.
Berry
Day
Goodwood and St Peters are evenly placed after a first
day which saw Goodwood have a mixed result with the
bat. Batting first Goodwood were able to make 209 all
out, however there wasn’t enough time left in the day for
St Peters to begin their chase. Goodwood never
managed to get big partnerships together in order to
push up their total and as a result the match is still in the
balance with both teams having a good chance with a
strong performance on day two.

Woodville Rechabites won the toss and elected to bat against
Pembroke at Matheson Reserve on quite a reasonable batting
wicket. The Wreckers started their innings in a steady fashion,
with Steve Urbank and Cam Behrendt putting on 37 for the
1st wicket, before the entry of Sam "Smacko " Mc Ewen.
The Kings favourite cult figure took three quick wickets, firstly
removing Behrendt, followed by Tyler Stopp and then the
dangerman Ashley Brown without bothering the scorers. Leg
spinner Jimmy Winnard then chipped in with two quick
wickets including a pearler to bowl Mark Holton for a duck.
The carnage resulted in the Wreckers quickly losing 5 wickets
for 13 runs.
With the scoreboard looking ugly at 5/50, the wickets
continued to fall with Urbank the sixth player dismissed for a
well compiled 41, playing the ball onto his stumps off the
bowling of Jake Dinan-Gilman. Ghullum was unlucky to be
adjudged LBW off the last ball before tea off Grant Doran,
which resulted in the Wreckers up against the wall at tea with
the score on 8/95.
The game completely changed after tea, with Mark Doufos
playing shots and putting away the loose ball superbly, and
well supported by Shae Trienthy, adding 76 to the score in
quick time. Douffos hit the boundary nine times, as well as
clearing it three times, in his swash buckling 75, eventually
caught behind by Jake Boerema off Dinan- Gilman.
A smart piece of fielding by Ash Herbert with a direct hit run
out ended Woodville Rechabites innings. Herbert had an
inspired day in the field with two catches to go with his run
out.
Pembrokes innings commenced with Dinan-Gilman adjudged
LBW off Doufos, which was folollowed up with a good yorker
to beat Boerema with scoring. Pembroke finished 2/34 at
stumps in a evenly poised game, with early wickets the key
for the wreckers, while the Kings will want Tom Watson,
Kieran Price to stand up and lead their team to victory.

ATCA A1 - Payneham vs Grange

Payneham have given themselves the best chance of
staying in contention for a finals position getting at least
a first innings victory after the first day of their clash with
Grange. Grange batted first and struggled to score and
as a result they were bowled out in the 28th over with
just 77 runs on the board.

Shane McDermott top scored with 49 not out, but
unfortunately for both him and the team nobody was
able to stay with him in the middle long enough for him
to reach his half century and the teams total to increase.
For Payneham the best bowler was easily Steven Crook
who took 7 wickets in the innings, from 14 overs.
With Crook in such good form he bowled half of the
overs for Payneham and almost single-handedly ensured
that the target would be kept low. Muhammad Sheikh
took the other three wickets in just over 3 overs and the
team was well placed to chase down the target.
Payneham's response with the bat was by no means
emphatic but they did enough to get the victory as they
reached the target with 8 wickets down. They were
eventually bowled out for 93 in the 29th over with
Andrew Lee making 32 and top scoring for Payneham.
Grange's best bowler was Andrew Fry who took 6 for 26
but unfortunately for Grange it was not enough to get
the first innings points. With so many wickets falling on
day one this match could go to an outright result,
especially if both teams find it as difficult to bat as they
did on day one.
With Payneham looking to replace Grange inside the top
four, this weekend gives them a great chance to get a
boost as they head into the last few matches.

In another fixture that has a lot riding on the result, at
opposite ends of the spectrum, Brighton host Pulteney Old
Scholars in a clash that is season defining to both clubs. At one
end of the spectrum, Pulteney are striving to stay with the top
4 of division one, who along with Payneham, seem to have all
but locked away the fight for the title of premier of Adelaide
Turf Cricket Association.
In the previous round, Pulteney were taught a lesson by their
college rival Pembroke, losing by over 100 runs without
showing a glimpse of fight chasing a reachable target of 197
off 50 overs. The bowling held it owns against the Kings, with
Jordan wood the major wicket taker with 3/49, but may have
leaked a few too many runs. There was ample support from
Jack Douventzides with a steady 2/33 off his allocated 10
overs. What is of major concern for Pulteney is the batting, not
one batter registering over 30 runs, something that must be
rectified this week against Brighton, who are full of confidence
coming off a comfortable win against Goodwood.
Lead by Jacob Fishwick, opening the batting and guiding his
team with 84 off 138 balls, which enabled the rest of his team
mates to hold up an end to make a competitive total of 187,
which proved too much for Goodwood. Runs on the board is
always a key to victory, especially when your bowling attack
has former District A Grade cricketers in Simon Hatji (2/22 off
10 overs) and former South Australian second XI
representative Chad Parish (2/24) leading the way.
Key players in the game are Jordan Wood, who sits 6th in the
leading run scorers with 308 runs @ 38.38, whilst Andrew
Warner is always dangerous despite 247 runs @ 30.88. For
Brighton, their bowling is the key to victory, with a formidable
four pronged attack in Chad Parish, Rob McCrard, Aaron
Fishwick and Club leading wicket taker Simon Hatji.
After winning away from home in their last hit out, Captain
Justin Ifould will be looking for back-to-back victories to get
themselves out of the relegation zone, considering the two
Woodville Clubs have tough games in round 8.

In the other match of the round (the other being fourth placed
Grange verse fifth placed Payneham), Para Hills confront backto-back challenges, especially after not contending with
Payneham last week at Silver Stream oval. Coming up against
the new premiership favourite, Prince Alfred Old Scholars, is
exactly what coach Greg Quinn will be looking for when it
comes to testing the resolve of his playing group.
In round 7, Para Hills bowling attack was bullied by a powerful
display of limited overs batting, which was the catalyst of the
loss. McGregor-Cassidy and Wordsworth could hold their
heads high in claiming seven wickets between them, but the
inability to contain the runs hurt Para Hills the most, which will
need to change coming up against the power hitting of Prince
Alfred OC.
Returning home for this top 4 clash will give Prince Alfred OC
the advantage, particularly if it’s much hyped about batting
continues to notch scores in excess of 200, to enable the
bowling attack to just chip away and build pressure for their
wickets. Bowling Woodville South out for 169 with 5 overs to
spare, was the right tonic for a run chase that was never
tested once Tyler (45 runs) and Hurburgh (82) combined for
the match defining partnership of 93. The miserly combination
of Dent (2/24) and Richardson (3/20) off a combined 18 overs
will be looking to make inroads into Para Hills batting line up.
Tom Brinsley is the most dominant batter in the competition,
with 459 @ 65.57 and is the key wicket for Para Hills, with Sam
Hurburgh showing promise with 247 @ 41.17. One of the
reason Para Hills sits in the top 4 is the ability for their batting
order to share the workload, with four stroke makers sitting in
the top 10 run scorers. Considering this, tight bowling &
building of pressure will be the key to victory for either of
these two teams.
A loss for Para Hills won’t lose a top 4 position with 3 games
to go, but there will be questions marks surrounding their
ability to keep up with the powerhouses of Pooraka, PAOC and
the dangerous Grange.

With only a few opportunities for teams to string
some wins together and make a push for the finals,
this week is important for those teams still in
contention and others trying to avoid relegation.
Unley's best bowlers were Joe Speak and Alistair

Unley then went out to bat with 20 overs left in the
day and at stumps sit at 2 for 69.
First up and Flinders University had a disappointing
innings with the bat in their match against Unley.
Flinders batted first but unfortunately for them

dismissed in the 58th over. Steven McAllister was
the top scorer for Flinders with 38 while Craig
Bartlett made 33. Neither was able to go on with
their start and make a half century which meant
that the team's total was lower than they would’ve
been hoping for.
The next match sees Marion taking on Brahma Lodge
in a game which is still in the balance after day one of
play. Marion batted first on day one and with a couple
of half centuries managed to post the respectable
total of 207 from 70 overs. Kyle Tapscott top scored
with 55 while captain Warrick Stanborough continued
his good form, making 50.

ATCA A2 Overview
At the end of the day Marion had a chance to pick up
an early wicket or two as Brahma had to survive 8

Ingle Farm taking 6 for 21 which gave the team the

PDCA A Grade Overview by Ben Jones
Heavyweights produce classic match
ROSE & CROWN claimed a four-wicket win against
fellow PDCA premiership fancy SALISBURY WEST
at Ridley Reserve last weekend in what was likely
so far the clash of the season.
Salisbury West batted first and looked well on
track for a big win after smashing a huge 4/268
from its 40 overs. Anthony Lewendon continued
his dazzling form to score a magnificent 116
opening the batting, while being supported later in
the innings by Andrew Parkhouse (62). Lewendon
and Will Sewell (17) go the innings off to a good
start with a 65-run opening stand, but it was the
135 runs scored in quick time between Parkhouse
and Lewendon that sunk the knife into the Rose &
Crown bowling attack.
The huge total looked all the more formidable
when Rosies sunk to 3/61 early, and at 5/117, the
task looked all but impossible. However, despite a
lack of support from the rest of the top order,
Russell Figallo occupied the crease and kept the
scoreboard ticking along to eventually finish with
an unbeaten 103.
The support from the other end finally came later
in the innings when Leon Kent (25 not out) dug
deep and held up an end. It meant Figallo singlehandedly got his side back in the contest, and
continued his fast scoring to the point where he
and Kent put on 99 runs for the sixth wicket and
reached West's total with two overs to spare.
ANGLE vALE also had a good day with the bat
during its solid 105-run win away to CRAIGMORE
last Saturday. It came despite a wonderful effort
with the ball from Craigmore's Shaun Baker, who
snared a quality 6/26.
vIRGINIA continued its late-season revival with a 37run at home against PARAFIELD GARDENS last
weekend. A healthy 3/198 from its 40 overs was
always going to be tough to chase for the visiting
team, but the struggling Gardens side refused to lay
down against arguably the PDCA's form side. Brad
Wills (81 not out) batted the entirety of his side's 40
overs, but tight bowling from Virginia meant his side
fell short with 6/161 at the conclusion of the contest.
Shaun Lay put his hand up for man-of-the-match
honours, leading the way during Virginia's stint at the
crease with 93 not out.
In the other PDCA game, another solid effort from the
improving ONE TREE HILL was not enough to stop it
receiving its second defeat in succession, when it fell
38 runs short of victory at home to CENTRAL UNITED
last weekend.

Adelaide Suburban Section 1 Overview
Cove and Keswick Fight It Out For Top Spot
What a way to celebrate the Australia day weekend
but with some great cricket! That’s exactly the
attitude of the Adelaide and Suburban Cricket
Association and all teams gave a great performance
over the weekend.
First up was Plympton Footballers facing
Coromandel Ramblers at Plympton Oval. Plympton
Footballers proved comfortable by winning the toss
and deciding to bat first. They made it to 68 overs
before they were all out for 239. P Budarick made
the most runs for the Plympton Footballers making
48 runs closely followed by RD Moore. Coromandel
Ramblers aren’t going to bow out though, knowing
the chase and all ready accumulating 10 runs. J
Calderbank showed great bowling taking 3 wickets.
If they can use those efforts again next week it will
definitely prove to be a close match.
Next up are Cove verses Keswick at Cove Sports and
Community Football club. Keswick won the toss this
week and decided to take on batting first. They
made an impressive 215 off 69.3 overs but
unfortunately were all out. R Curyer made the most
runs making 69 before being bowled out. Cove have
proven before that they are able to make the chase.
Stand out for them this week was BM Kinnear.
ICC Sharks faced the challenge of Sheidow Park at
Hackham Community Sports club. Sheidow Park
took to bat first making 229 off 71.4 overs. J Kilderry
made a huge contribution to the score making 117
runs. For the ICC Sharks they started their innings off
and finished 1 over before the end of day, however
made no runs as of yet. ICC Sharks have proven the
chase down large numbers over this season so a
close game is expected.
Next up was the fight between Coromandel and
South Road at Hewett Sports Ground. Coromandel
won the toss and batted first. Unfortunately for
Coromandel their innings only lasted 29 overs
before they were all out for 35. They weren’t able to
hold back South Road and they lost on the first
innings. They were however able to start their
second innings making 18 with only 16 overs down.
South Road was in smashing form this weekend
taking down Coromandel early and limiting the runs.
When it was time for them to bat in the same
amount of time Coromandel used South Road made
149 with 4 wickets downs before declaring. D Vertue
was a standout whilst bowling as he took 7 wickets
and B Wilson made 47 runs not out for South Road.
For South Road this win on the first innings is going
to give them the points to push away and get closer
to third spot on the ladder.
Finally the Western Youth Centre faced
Morphettville Park at the Western Youth Centre.
Morphettville Park won the toss and batted first.
They were able to make 197 runs off 67.4 overs
before they were all out. M Nurney was a standout
making 58 runs towards the score. The Western
Youth Centre is looking in form as they were able to
start their innings and made 12 runs off 5 overs. SB
Luders took an impressive 5 wickets whilst bowling.
Next week’s game will be eagerly awaited not only
for the Western Youth Centre and Morphettville
Park but for all the teams.

Three to go and six doesnt go into four
After a weekend off for Meyer Shield commitments
Round 11 of Great Southern cricket gets underway
this weekend & with just three matches remaining
for the season & there are some crucial matches for
some teams in regard to ladder positions.
Encounter Bay take on McLaren Districts on the turf
this round & the Bays currently sit in second position
on the ladder & will be desperate for the points to
hold their spot in the top two while a win for
McLaren Districts would see them also pushing for a
top two finish.
Matt Overall has been in fine form for the Bays with
a hundred last outing being followed up by another
big ton at the Meyer Shield on the weekend & with
Lintern & Hoffmann also showing good form with
the bat the Crushers bowling attack in Nairn, Ifould,
Hockey & Duncombe will have their work cut out for
them.
McLaren’s also boast some batting quality in their
line up with Curtis always looking to attack early to
give the likes of Ifould & Chambers a solid platform
to build on & the Bays will be relying on Moules,
Hynes & Zrim to make early inroads in to the
Crushers top order.

Great Southern CA Overview (cont.)
Another big match will take place at Goolwa Oval as
the home side look to continue their undefeated
season as they take on Noarlunga & a win to the
Magpies would basically seal the minor premiership
for them. The battle between Andy Evans with the
ball against the Noarlunga top order in Baldey, the
Garrard brothers & Scarff will be crucial to Goolwa’s
chances & he will need good support from Jones,
Lawrence & H.Robertson if they are to keep the
Shoes batting under control. H. Robertson was in
good form with the bat last outing & the inclusion of
Kuss in to the top order for Goolwa is a welcome
addition as they look for early runs against the
bowling of Peach, Stewart-Tonkin & Farrelly.
Willunga take on Port Elliot at home this match &
the Demons will be looking for a win to keep their
very faint finals hopes alive & they will fancy their
chances with the Port Elliot side struggling with the
bat in recent weeks. The Bloods top order in
Whitbourne, Mason & Clarke has been
disappointing & Hockham, Minot & Williamson will
be keen to get early wickets to put their middle
order under pressure. Likewise, the Demons batting
has underperformed this year with Elliott & Docking
showing some better form last round but they will
need more support from their middle order. The
Bloods bowling attack led by Donaldson & Martin
has been solid for most of the year & with
youngsters Steele & Swearse giving good support
they would be hoping to keep the Willunga batting
in check.
Mount Compass travel to Seaford Rise this round
with a win for the Bulls basically sewing up a finals
spot & after a slow start to the season they have
steadily built their form during the course of the
year.
They are now getting a more even contribution with
the bat from players like Paul East, Barrett & Hicks
while Tucker & Josh Dalitz keep getting the job done
with the ball. The Sea Eagles have continued to chip
away this year with players like Tye McIvor, Swain &
Williams all capable with the bat & if Sean McIvor
plays then the Bulls will need to be at their best to
secure the points.
The final match for this round sees Rapid Bay travel
to Myponga with the home side full of confidence
after winning their last two games with Rapid Bay
desperately needing the points to keep their finals
hopes alive. Boulden has had a solid season with the
bat for Myponga & has received good support
recently from youngster Ormsby down the order & if
Ryan Haverty can find some form then they should
be able to post a competitive total. Young has been
getting early wickets for Rapid Bay & with AshtonPlace, Wright & Sparnon forms a very solid bowling
attack. Patterson has been in good form with the ball
for Myponga recently & his battle with the top order
of Bennett, Williss & Wright will have a big bearing
on the outcome of this match.
The Great Southern Cricket Association travelled to
Kangaroo Island last weekend for this years Meyer
Shield competition & after a great win against
Murray Towns on Saturday they unfortunately
couldn’t repeat that form on Sunday going down
comfortably against the Alexandrina & Eastern Hills
side. Saturday’s match saw Matt Overall dominate
the bowling making a superb 125 backed up by
skipper Sam Hoffmann & Cameron Lintern who both
made half centuries with Stephen Nairn taking the
bowling honours with four wickets & Bryce Garrard
chipping in with two wickets.

Huge round of upsets in the Barossa
THE B&LCA A1 competition was thrown into chaos
last weekend when all four one-day clashes
produced the unexpected, with all of the lessfancied sides defeating their higher-quality
opponents.
After defeating top-side Angaston the week prior,
GAWLER CENTRAL's hot run came to an abrupt end
when it suffered a shock four-run loss to bottom side
GILBERT VALLEY at Stockwell last weekend. It was a
clash that saw the bowlers on both sides struggle to
penetrate the opposition batting attacks, with just
10 wickets taken for the game. Gilbert Valley chose
to bat first and posted one of its best totals of the
season to finish its 40 overs at the crease just four
down for 183.
Kym Vandeleur (53) once again led the way for his
side, but the good showing by the Bulls was thanks
to the much-needed support Vandeleur received
from Craig Mullins (53) during the pair's 84-run
stand.
With the Central bowlers struggling to take wickets,
it was up to the Tiger batsmen to take advantage of
the perfect batting conditions.
However, an opening stand of 79 between Michael
Davis (39) and Elliot Stibbs (36) was not enough to
assure the visitors of victory. The ever-reliable David
Coombs (54 not out) was the only batsman to
contribute after the openers' removal, and with the
rest of the Central batting order struggling the Tigers
fell just four runs short at the end of their allotted 40
overs.
Despite modest figures of 2/25, the Bulls' James
Vandeleur returned to form with his tight bowling
holding the chasing Gawler Central at bay during the
final overs of the clash.

Barossa & Light CA Overview By Ben Jones
KAPUNDA continued to hold the wood over
FREELING after its three-wicket win at Freeling last
weekend.
The home side returned to form the previous
weekend, but all of that was forgotten after a
disastrous batting performance yielded just 104
runs. Joey Brown continued to assert himself as one
the competition's best all-round cricketers with a
dominant display with the ball claiming 3/27, while
Connor McLean was also dangerous with 3/31.
Despite the under-par total, Freeling gave itself
every chance of snatching an unlikely victory,
defending its 104 to the teeth.
A quality all-round bowling effort from the home
side reduced Kapunda to 7/89 during the see-sawing
innings. But it was to no avail, with stalwarts Sam
Ryan (8 not out) and Rod Brown (9 not out) seeing
the visitors over the line with a 19-run ninth-wicket
partnership.
It was another missed opportunity caused by batting
woes for ANGASTON during its surprise sevenwicket loss away to SANDY CREEK last weekend.
Angaston was in a decent position at 3/63 with Ben
Burgess (30) and Brandon Kurtz (24) at the crease.
But that's where the Cockies' bowlers kicked into
gear, with Lee Hill (4/16) and Scott Hill (3/29)
sweeping through the Angaston batting order to
dismiss the visitors for just 122 after 31 overs.
The Cockies had no trouble reaching the total, with
the usual contributors Andrew Kokot (47) and Travis
Gebauer (29) setting up the win with a 71-run
opening stand.
email: [email protected]
SOUTH GAWLER continued the trend of shock results
when a quality all-round effort saw it defeat
NURIOOTPA by 51 runs at South Gawler last
weekend.
South chose to bat first and despite reaching a
decent 165, the Lions would have been disappointed
to not bat out its 40 overs.
The Lions also once again relied on too few for
contributions, with just Matt Trzeciak (70) and Riley
Barker (60) reaching double figures.
The inspiring effort by the two certainly sparked the
bowlers into action, with the modest total ultimately
proving far too difficult for the Nuri replying
batsmen.
Jordan Dare starred with the ball taking 4/23 and
with support from Dave Golder (2/19), the Lions
swept through the Nuri line up for 114 in just 31
overs.
