February 1st: Ann Corkran Though three expeditions from the Flatheads failed to bring priests from St Louis, the fourth expedition struck gold at Council Bluffs, Iowa. There the two Flathead ambassadors stumbled on to one of America’s most intrepid missionaries, the Belgian immigrant, Fr Peter De Smet, S.J., who immediately pledged to join their return. February 7th: Bill Hatfield While a seminarian, De Smet (whose father once feared would become a soldier of fortune) heeded the plea of a Belgian missionary for “a handful of devoted men to save an entire people and extend the reign of God” among American natives (10). Coming to the US with several schoolmates, he joined the Jesuits upon arrival, and was ordained in 1827. After his accidental meeting with Peter Gaucher and Young Ignace La Mouss at Council Bluffs in 1839, and learning of the Flatheads’ long painful quest for Black Robes, he eagerly agreed to return with them to the mountains. In summer, 1840, the trio set out for the Bitter Root Valley. As they neared home, Gaucher travelled ahead to spread the good news that a priest was at last on the way. A party of warriors rode out to find De Smet, then camped with Young Ignace on the Green River. Following this joyful greeting and another week’s travel, the Jesuit entered the village and was formally welcomed to the Flathead nation by Chief Big Face and his councillors. Big Face told him, “I have always exhorted my people to love the Great Spirit. … Our ardent desire to be instructed in what concerns our salvation has led us on several occasions to send a deputation of our people to the Great Black Robe of St Louis to ask him to send a priest. … Speak Black Robe! We will follow the words of your mouth” (11). Within weeks, De Smet, powerfully impressed, himself hit the perilous trail to St Louis to obtain permission and clergy for a permanent mission. PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION FOREST AND 6TH STREET EUFAULA, Oklahoma 74432 The Oil of the Sick, usually labeled OI (for Oleum Infirmarum), is often reserved with chrism and the oil of catechumens in an ambry. An ambry is a cabinet, often beautifully ornamented and kept near the baptistery in the church. Olive oil, with no fragrance added, is blessed at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week by the bishop, although there is now a provision for a priest to bless oil if none is available. This restores to our Latin Rite practice a tradition never lost in the Eastern tradition, in which priests consecrate the oil of the sick, even at the sick person’s home. Any vegetable oil may be used now, since olive oil is difficult to obtain in some places. Many priests keep a small supply of oil close at hand in a small metal tube called a “stock.” 918.689.7345 Reverend Kevin Willis, Pastor Office: 918.423.6695 Rectory: 918.426.4919 Cell: 918.813.3939 In the former rite, every sense of the body was anointed, accompanied by a prayer for forgiveness of sin. So, the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, hands, and feet were all touched. Today, this is simplified to an anointing of the forehead and the hands, but generally today the oil is used more lavishly, and the symbolism of touch so central to the rite is enhanced. Often, a priest will invite everyone present to join in the “laying on of hands.” Sick persons are often pushed aside or feared in our culture, and to be reverently touched in love can be a profound experience of God’s healing, forgiving, accepting presence through the ministry of the Church.
