Maiden Gully
Progress Association
Newsletter Summer 2014
Presidents Report
Welcome to our Summer 2015 newsletter.
It’s an exciting time to be living in Maiden Gully, and as the Calendar of Upcoming Events below shows, there are
several local Community Groups and Sporting Clubs running events over the coming weeks that local residents are
invited to participate and get involved in. As always, we encourage you to support the events being run by these
organisations, because it is only through strength in numbers at Committee level and participation rates that allow
these organisations to thrive, which ultimately creates the strong, vibrant community that we want to see in Maiden
Gully. Further information on each of these events and organisations can be found within this newsletter.
The Maiden Gully Progress Association would like to thank everyone who attended and performed at the Strategem
Community Carols in Maiden Gully event on Sunday 7 December 2014 at the Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve. It
was great to see so many families attend for the entertainment provided and we appreciate your support in
purchasing the food and drinks that were available. All monies raised support the activities of the Maiden Gully
Progress Association and are ultimately returned to the Maiden Gully community.
The Maiden Gully Progress Association meets at 7.30 pm on the first Monday of every month at the Maiden Gully
Community Hall. Our meetings are open to all residents in Maiden Gully and we welcome newcomers and those who
are interested in making a contribution to their local community. If you, or someone you know, has a passion for
building local communities and/or organising social activities, please get in contact with us or come along and
introduce yourself at one of our monthly meetings.
Finally, I would like to encourage local business owners to consider advertising in this newsletter. The newsletter is
published four times per year and is delivered to approximately 1,500 households in Maiden Gully. Advertising
revenue provides funds to publish the newsletter, but at this stage, the Maiden Gully Progress Association still relies
on a Community Grant from the City of Greater Bendigo to fully fund the costs of producing the newsletter. So by
advertising, not only will you get great exposure for your business, but you will also be supporting the many community
and sporting groups who use the publication to get their message to the local community.

Maiden Gully Marong Lions Club
Bringing the Birdsville Races to Bendigo
For ten years an annual tour to the Birdsville Races has been the major fund raiser for
the Maiden Gully/Marong Lions Club. During that time they have returned many
thousands of dollars back to the local community.
On Sunday the 15th of February 2015, and in recognition of ten years travel, the
Maiden Gully/Marong Lions Club have invited the Birdsville Race Club to a “little bit of Birdsville” in Bendigo. The
Maiden Gully/Marong Lions Club, the Birdsville Race Club and the Bendigo Jockey Club are conducting a Birdsville
Race Day in Bendigo.
This is an invitation to Maiden Gully and Marong residents to support this initiative and take part in the
entertainment, the atmosphere, the spontaneous friendship and movement that is synonymous with the
Birdsville Races.
A feature of the afternoon is the Crack Up Sisters from Queensland. They are scheduled for two varying shows – are
engaging, very funny and in constant demand for performances around the country. Watching and hearing them is
worth the race entry. They are to be supported by Bendigo’s Sing Australia Choir; while a welcome will feature The
Chinese Line Dancers.
Exact performance times are not available until we know race details, however a 1.00 pm start is anticipated and
performers will be in the following order:
1.
2.
3.

The Maiden Gully Progress Association is joining forces with the Maiden Gully

Maiden Gully Fire Brigade
Fire Season Update
With very dry weather since November, Maiden Gully
firefighters have been busy with grassfires both locally
and further south. An unusual cause has been birds
shorting power lines with sparks starting grassfires.
The ease that these fires have spread indicates just how dry the conditions are. Fortunately, these fires have been
promptly reported and quickly extinguished. Please be very careful over the coming months and have a plan to
take care of your family.
Improved equipment
Over the past year, the brigade has committed to an expenditure of $14,000 to keep our equipment and facilities
up to date. One of the major expenditure items has been to automate the operation of the main engine bay doors.
When a call is received, the first firefighter into the Station now just presses a single button and all doors begin to
open. The doors close automatically after the trucks respond.
Other new items purchased include new firefighting nozzles, a second “Hotspotter” to identify smouldering fuel and
torches for use in building fires. With strong support from Bunnings, we have continued the landscaping
improvements at the front of the station and will be planting additional native plants in autumn.
Upgrading Mobile Command Capability
With the support of the CFA, we have been able to upgrade our Ford Ranger to a full Field Command Vehicle by
adding additional radios. The need for this was highlighted on a number of occasions both locally and further afield.
Stay Aware:
Firefighters talk about situational awareness and on hot summer days that means going outside and checking what
is happening around you. You may also check warnings by:




Using the FireReady smartphone app from cfa.vic.gov.au.
Tuning your radio to the ABC (91.1 FM or 774 AM). Many commercial and community stations including
KLFM also provide this service.

Maiden Gully Junior Football Club
2014 was a break out year for our growing junior football club with the
Under 14’s winning the club’s first ever premiership.
In 2014 the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club (MGJFC) had two Under 9 teams,
two Under 10 teams, an Under 12’s and an Under 14’s team.
In 2015 we will have two Under 9’s and 10’s, potentially two Under 12’s and
Under 14’s and, with players moving up an age bracket from our successful Under 14 team, hopefully the first
ever Under 16 team. Players will still be required in all age groups. Coaches and team managers have been
appointed for the upcoming 2015 season.
The Auskick program remains strong with a large number of children participating in 2014 and similar numbers
expected in 2015. We look forward to many of these children coming up to start their footy careers in the Under
9’s come the beginning of the 2015 football season.
Alignment with Marong Football Club
The Bendigo Junior Football League (BJFL) has indicated for some time it wanted all junior football teams aligned
with a senior football team. MGJFC has always been a little unique as we are not a school based team and have
no direct pathway for players beyond our top age group. Our numbers are growing rapidly and a pathway makes
sense. For this reason, and after considerable consultation, the club has aligned with Marong Football Club.
This is not a merger but a potential pathway for players after they finish playing juniors at the MGJFC. The
Marong Football Club along with our football club has a vision for the future of football in this region which is
pretty hard to ignore, exciting, and the reason the alignment occurred with the support of the Bendigo Junior
Football League. The Marong Football Club has produced a document which outlines its vision for football in the
region. This document is able to be viewed on our webpage. Just Google Maiden Gully Junior Football Club and
click on the extended version of the foxsportspulse.com/club_info link. We can also be found on Facebook.
Registration Day for 2015 Season
The Maiden Gully Junior Football Club will be holdings it Registration Day for the 2015 season at 11.00 am on
Sunday the 8th of January 2015 at the clubrooms at the Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve, Beckham’s Road
Maiden Gully.
Keep an eye out for the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club flyer which will be distributed to all families in the
Maiden Gully area in late January for further information.
Join the fastest growing junior football club in Bendigo.
We are committed to providing every child with the opportunity to develop their football skills in a family friendly
environment.

Maiden Gully Cricket Club
The Maiden Gully Cricket Club’s season is well underway. At the half-way mark of the season
the Division 3 Senior team in the Emu Valley Cricket Association competition is well placed
to make the finals and, hopefully, go one better than runners-up (as they did in 2013/14).
While the Division 1 and 2 Senior teams have found the going a bit tougher, they continue
to improve and will be looking to finish the season off with some more wins.
The Club has experienced strong growth in its junior ranks this season, with six teams entered in the Bendigo and
District Cricket Association competitions (from the T20 Blast through to the Under 16’s). The introductory Milo in2
Cricket program is also being conducted on a Sunday morning from 9.00 am at the Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve.
Off-field, the Club continues to grow strongly, with the new Committee ensuring that all people involved with the Club
can come together and feel a part of one club at several family-friendly social activities. Discussions are also taking
place about what the Club may look like in the future, especially with the potential availability of additional grounds as
the Marist College develops.
If you are interested in a game of cricket or want to support the Maiden Gully Cricket Club, come along to Maiden Gully
Recreation Reserve to see the team in action on Saturday's, or make contact with the club through Club Secretary,
Scott Haw, on 0447 808 725 or [email protected], Tim Chisholm on 0412 984 216 or Neil Byers at the
Maiden Gully Primary School.
Are you retired or nearing retirement? Interested in the idea of an active, fulfilling and
meaningful life into older age?
We are looking for older people to volunteer as supportive peers for others in the same chapter of life. Volunteers would work
with the project worker alongside older people with a disability, sharing experiences and ideas about ageing well and planning
for a good life in older age.
Each volunteer will have the opportunity to:
 Participate in group discussions about ageing well and what that means
 Take part as peer supports in big Planning a series of facilitated workshops where each participant and their family
and friends will make plans for a fulfilling life in older age
 Reflect on and develop their own plans for living a full and meaningful life into older age
 Support an older person with a disability to put their plan into action, where there are natural connections and shared
interests that lend themselves to ongoing relationships.
Interested? Please call!

Bendigo Lacrosse Club
History
The Bendigo Lacrosse Association (BLA) was officially formed in January 2008, making it the first regional
association in Victorian lacrosse history. For the next two years, the BLA began introducing lacrosse throughout
the local region. It provided clinics in schools, recruited more senior players, as well as hosted a number of
friendly matches with various Melbourne clubs.
2010 marked a big year for the BLA as it entered a senior team in the Victorian Men’s Division 3 Field Lacrosse
Competition for their inaugural season. The first match was held on April 18th with Knox defeating Bendigo by 1
goal. The 2010 season was a great learning experience for the club and its players. Also some of the players
participated in the Victorian summer box lacrosse league.
In 2012 Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve was the new training ground for Bendigo Lacrosse Warhawks. In 2013
the Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve was officially our home ground for senior matches during winter.
Junior Competition
In 2013 the BLA formed a local junior competition. Competition was and currently is on Thursday’s nights from
4.30 to 6.00pm.
Children were recruited from schools that had clinics conducted by the club and included Girton Grammar, St
Therese’s, St Killian’s, California Gully, Maiden Gully, Quarry Hill, and White Hills Primary Schools. Other schools
that had clinics were Epsom and St Peter’s Primary Schools. It is expected that these schools and 4 different
schools will be approached to have clinics in Term 3.
The junior competition consists of four teams that are made up of children primarily from the above primary
schools. The teams are called Sioux (Girton), Cheyenne (Maiden and California Gully), Cherokee (St Therese’,
Kennington and CCB) and Navajo (Quarry Hill, Girton, and others).
In the 2014 Junior Spring Competition, which was played at Shadforth Park North Bendigo (behind Bendigo North
Bowls Club), Cheyenne, which has players from Maiden Gully and Californian Gully Primary schools, won the
competition defeating Cherokee (children from St Therese's and CCB) 5 goals to 4.
The 2015 Junior Summer Competition will commence on 29th January 2015 at Shadforth Park and new players
are welcome.
We hope we can establish a secondary school competition (U/14-15) in 2015, but clinics will need to be held and
protective gear bought to supply the children. It is hoped this will be a feeder to the senior men team. We will
need to look for a female ex-lacrosse player(s) to assist with our girls as there is a mix of approximately 50%
boys/girls in a junior ranks.
The future looks bright but work needs to be constant and continuous so we can improve on and off the field.
Senior Competition
Bendigo Lacrosse Club will be holding pre-season senior training on the first Tuesday 3rd February 2015 at
Shadforth Park, Bendigo North. Pre-season training will continue at Maiden Gully from 1st April 2015.
Senior competition commences Saturday 11 April 2015.
If interested in participating in either Juniors or Seniors lacrosse please call Gino Iuliano, President, Bendigo
Lacrosse Association on 0409 970 767 for details. Alternatively refer to the website at www.bendigolacrosse.com

Marist College Bendigo
So the planning is over and the Marist
College Bendigo is ready to begin!
On 2 February 2015, 220 students and
24 staff will begin as members of the
Marist Learning Community in Maiden Gully. The main learning centre (below) visible from the road is complete and
fully furnished. This building is named the Montagne Centre. Montagne was the surname of a young boy Marcellin
Champagnat met in his early years as a Priest. His encounter with Jean Baptiste Montagne 200 years ago inspired
him to form the Marist Brothers that are now all over the world.
The only entrance to the College is now via GolfLinks Road. All cars and enter and leave via this point whilst busses
will enter via Golflinks Road and depart into Pata’s Road. As well as the parking all being ready the College also has
netball and basketball courts and the first oval is greening up quickly and will be ready for full use in just three
weeks time. Behind the Montagne Cente there are downball courts, an adventure playground and a basketball half
court. Whilst our wetlands suffered some damaged during the storm in early January the recently installed plants
have survived and this beautiful feature will be a significant element of learning at Marist.
The College will have an official opening in late March. In Term Two we will offer a number of opportunities for
members of the community to visit our new College and see our learning community in action.

Maiden Gully Precinct Structure Plan
Latest news and update
The Maiden Gully Development Contributions Plan is currently being finalised and
is a detailed document that will allow the effective delivery of a range of
infrastructure to service the growth in accordance with the Maiden Gully Precinct

is shared equitably, and provided in a timely manner. The Plan also sets out the
financial contribution that developers will be required to contribute for local
infrastructure. The draft Development Contributions Plan will be available for
comment in the early part of 2015.
Following the completion of the Development Contributions Plan, Council is able

Membership and Getting Involved with the Maiden Gully Progress Association.
The Maiden Gully Progress Association has prepared and published a Community Plan, which outlines many goals and priority
actions that the residents of Maiden Gully have identified would make Maiden Gully an even better place to live.
With Maiden Gully experiencing strong population growth, it is important that the desires of residents are continually
communicated to those that are making decisions about Maiden Gully. A strong and active membership base of the Maiden
Gully Progress Association is a key component in ensuring that this happens.
In the next twelve months, the Committee would like to increase the number of social events that are held in Maiden Gully, and
we would like as many residents as possible to join us to brainstorm ideas and assist in organising these events.
If this sounds like something that you would enjoy being involved in, please complete and return the above form today.

UFS Pharmacies
Building a Healthier Community
An important objective of UFS Pharmacies is to support community initiatives with a health and wellbeing focus. To
manage this objective, we set up the ‘Building a Healthier Community’ program. When joining or renewing your
membership, you can select from a list of organisations that we will donate half of your membership fee to.
In 2014, almost 7,000 UFS members nominated a local organisation to receive funding through the Building a
Healthier Community Program. From those member nominations, 67 local organisations shared in over $50,000 in
funding last year.
Loddon Mallee Kids is a support network for families with premature babies. The UFS Building a Healthier Community
funds helped run their playgroup and provided tools and toys for the group.
Golden Square Community Pool will now be able to train more volunteer lifeguards, and purchase equipment to help
maintain the swimming pool thanks to UFS members.
Golden Square Pool community group president Ken Hamilton encourages locals to get involved and help the
community. “It doesn’t matter who you support, as long as you get behind (the UFS Building a Healthier Community
Program), everyone benefits”, he said.
Among the community groups, which include many schools and clubs, the Maiden Gully Primary School, Maiden Gully
Fire Brigade, Maiden Gully Junior Football Club and the Maiden Gully Neighbourhood Watch, are seeking funds. Hasan
and the team at Maiden Gully UFS have a list of organisations to choose from when you choose to join or renew. Thank
