PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It is not a game of perfection; otherwise, I could not play it! So if you are
looking to improve your game for Team Play, Ducks, or a little respect, you
sometimes need some help. Crystalaire has many resources to help you
improve your game. You can hit the range, the practice pitching green or
putting green. You can even play more with an extra nine or eighteen. If
you want professional help, you can talk to our own PGA Pro Alan, and he
or Billy can give you private lessons to work on your game. But I thought I
would also mention that one of our CCC members has a site that has a
wealth of information for the golfer interested in perfecting some skills in a
vast video library, which can also improve your game. Please check out the
Jim Venetos Golf Academy at https://jimvenetosgolfacademy.com.
I might owe the Pook either congratulations, an apology or money for his
deflated team winning. I am a fan of the left coast and with family in the
State of Washington will be sitting on the other side with fully inflated golf
balls.
Making Memories. Share It With A Friend! Go Team CCC! Rewards

GOLF SHOP NEWS
by Alan Arvesen, PGA Head Professional
How is your year going so far? Have you stuck to any of
your resolutions? If not, then new ones are right around
the corner. How about this resolution? Play in at least two
more events than you did in 2014. Take it a step further,
win at least one more event this year. And last but not
least, bring in a new member to the Crystalaire family.
Why should you have all of the fun. Spread it around. My
resolution is to make sure that each and every member has
the best experience and best year possible at Crystalaire.
WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU?
We at Crystalaire pride ourselves in having one of the
finest staff always ready to serve the members. Besides a
smile, a kind word and a guaranteed starting time, we can
also assist you in other ways. For members who live
“down below” and not sure whether to make the trip up
here, call bright and early for a weather report. The Golf
Shop staff―Kay, Billy, Johnny and I, will always tell it
like it is, and we are right almost all the time. Not sure
what’s happening? Give us a call and we can give you a
run-down on all the current activities. Need a little work
on your game? Call us and we will get your game back on
the road to recovery. Need that club re-shafted or that set
of clubs re-gripped? We will do it for you as fast and as
efficiently as possible. Going out of town and want to play
other private clubs? Let us know and we will do our best
to set you up with a date and time. Almost all private clubs
around the country, with some exceptions, will accept
other reciprocal play on a limited basis. Need to purchase
that last minute birthday or anniversary present? Check
out the merchandise in the Golf Shop. We will even wrap
it up for you. These are just some of the things that we can
do. If you think of anything else, let us know. We will do
our best to accommodate you with a smile.
The less damage that is caused on the golf course (cart
tracks, divots, ball marks) at this time of year will only
insure that the course is in top playing condition once the
weather warms up. See if you can answer “yes” to the
following questions: Are you replacing or filling in your
share of divots? Are you fixing your share of ball marks?
Are you abiding by the 90 degree rule and keeping carts in
the rough whenever possible? Are you keeping your carts
well away from all greens and tees? Are you raking the
bunkers and placing the rakes in the proper spot? Are your
guests following all of the above guidelines? If you can
answer yes to all of the above, then you are doing your part
to insure that Crystalaire will always remain in top shape.
Thank you!

PACE OF PLAY
Everyone has their own opinion on how long a round of golf
should take. Some can play in three hours, others three and a
half and most play in four hours. Then, there are some who
will just take longer. The USGA defines Pace of Play as the
“ability to maintain your position” on the golf course. By
that, we mean that when following a group, you should
always be within one shot of that group. If a complete hole
opens up, then you are considered “out of position” and
should invite the group following to play through. It all boils
down to etiquette and consideration for others. Next time you
go out, write the time you started on the scorecard, also the
time you made the turn as well as your finish time. If the
total time is more than four hours, then there was some
obvious wasted time during your round. There can be a lot of
hard feelings on the course when there is poor judgment and
bad etiquette.
The course is in beautiful condition; good weather is right
around the corner, so let’s see everyone out in full force and
play some really great golf. In the meantime…
GOOD GOLFING!
ACES, ACES, ACES, ACES, ACES
Who will “bag” the first Hole-In-One of 2015? Will it be
you? Are you already a member of the Hole-In-One Club?
Ask Kevin Shankel, who had the last recorded “ace” in 2014.
He was able to reap the benefits of being in the HIO Club.
For information on joining either the men’s or ladies’ HIO
Club, contact one of the Golf Shop staff for assistance.
BITS ‘N’ PIECES

Hearing that I had recently begun working part time in the cafeteria at
Alpine School in Littlerock, John Blalock had a question for me. He said he
was curious to know the current price for a school lunch and said that when
he attended Alpine in 1964, the price for lunch was 35 cents. The current
price is $2.50. That’s not too bad considering that it amounts to an increase
of only 4.25 cents per year over the 51 years since 1964. I remember paying
a quarter for a cafeteria lunch in 1953. Ah, the good old days.
We hear that the Sheets and the Markeses had a nice time on a golf getaway
for a few days at Borrego Springs. Also, Mo Markese and Joyce Ford had a
good time golfing, gambling and shopping for a couple of days in Primm.
Marie Picerni is proud to announce the birth of her sixth great grandchild.
She said the whole Picerni family is very excited. Marie’s grandson Steven,
his wife Emily, and their son Emett, welcomed another son, Cooper, to their
family on January 19.
March 3rd will bring our 24th wedding anniversary to yours truly and the Pro.
Seems hard to believe it has been that long. I feel that is because time
seems to fly when you are having fun and enjoying life. We are both
always grateful for the great life that we have shared here at Crystalaire and
the many wonderful times, love and friendship we have shared with so
many of you.

Thought for the month: Happiness is the dividend on a well-invested life.
The 2015 "Girls Gone Wild" is working out. Ladies are
catching on to the idea of showing up on Tuesday
morning, signing up in the Golf Shop, and getting a
game. If you haven't given it a try yet, you should! The
Golf Shop sets up the games. Ladies’ foursomes begin
play at 9:00 a.m., and then stay for lunch. And I hear
from President Cheryl, we'll be giving it a try very soon
on Saturdays too. It's fun and so easy.
Crystalaire Men’s Club
from the Men’s Club President - Peter Bradford
Wow! How to begin? First, thanks to all who participated in the voting
process for our new Men's Club Board members. I know we love and
appreciate each and every one of our Crystalaire family and the great
Club which binds us. The Men's Club and all of us have enjoyed the
tremendous effort and exemplary service provided so selflessly by the
outgoing Board. Please join me in thanking Mr. Kevin Shankel, Mr.
Pete Markese and Mr. Frank Sheets for all they have done. We shall
endeavor to uphold their high standard.
If you are looking to travel a little this year and play some
courses with the girls, check out the announcement in
the locker room to play the Bakersfield Invitational. We
have lots of time to plan since this Invitational will be held
in March. This event is really nice and so is their
course.
Mo is in contact with the Bakersfield
Chairperson and will be posting more news as it
arrives. Stay tuned for this event. Many of the ladies are
already interested!
Your news reporter, Barb Dettloff
The learning curve for me is high, and I will appreciate any and all
input, opinions and criticisms that may aid in my education. We, the
new Board members, are most fortunate to be bolstered by the
continuing efforts of Mr. Ted Harrison and Mr. Bob Colman. We have
garnered the aid of our own Mr. George Flynn as Tournament Chair as
well. With their abilities, along with the nearly pious efforts of Mr. Jim
Stead, it does promise to be a glorious year of tournaments and fun for
all our Crystalaire family.

MEMBER HOLE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
To continue the tradition of maintaining excellent
playing conditions year round, here is how you can help
on your assigned hole:
1. Replace divots on tees & fairways with sod
or fill with divot mix.
2. Pick up broken tees on the tee box and
throw in trash container on ball washer.
3. Fix ball marks on Greens - not only your
mark but also on your assigned holes.
TOURNAMENT RESULTS
UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS IN JANUARY:
Individual Stroke Play
January 3
The first of three scheduled Individual Stroke play events saw Jim
Camaione fire a 1-under 71 for first place in the gross division. Peter
Bradford was the net winner with a 68, which was two shots better
than the 70 posted by Ron Thomas. The next scheduled Stroke Play
event is Saturday, February 21. Entry fee is $10 per person and it is an
Open “T”.
Sunday Couples
February 1
The format for the February Sunday Couples will be a Partners
Combined Stableford. Entry fee is $10 per couple and will be an
Open “T”. The points are as follows:
0 points
net double-bogey or worse
1 point
net bogey
2 points
net par
3 points
net birdie
5 points
net eagle
7 points
net double-eagle or better
The winners will be determined by the combined points of both
players based on net scores only. Then after a great day of golf,
stick around and watch the Super Bowl and have some great fun.
Sunday Couples
January 4
What a way to start the New Year for Doc & Cathy Holiday, winners
of the first Sunday Couples of 2015. Playing a Partners Combined
Net, the duo posted a score of 152 to take the top honors. A “frozen”
morning and delayed start limited the field for this first event to only
three couples.
The February Sunday Couples will be a Partners
Combined Stableford and will be on Super Bowl Sunday, February 1.
See separate article for details.
“Sweetheart” Tournament
February 15 (Sunday)
2015 is rolling right along and February signals the beginning of the
Tournament season at Crystalaire. The kick-off event will be the
annual “Sweetheart” Tournament. The format will be a Couples
Modified Pinehurst. The field will be divided into two equal flights
based on the combined handicap of each team. Entry fee is $20 per
team and it will be an Open “T”. The rules of the Modified
Pinehurst are as follows:
Each player will drive off the tee and then hit each other’s
second shot. The best second shot is then selected and
both players alternate from there until the ball is holed.
One-half of the combined handicap will be used.
There will be prizes for both gross and net winners in each
flight.
Come on out and make this first event of 2015 the best ever.
Men’s Thursday Team Play
The Thursday squad got their season underway as they traveled to Rio
Bravo and dropped a 34-14 decision. In the re-match the following
week at home, they pulled out the victory 32-16. The squad then
hosted Silver Lakes on January 29. The results of that match were not
available at press time. The team then winds up the season with a
home and home against Apple Valley.
Next Home Match: Thursday, February 19 vs. Apple Valley – 10:00
a.m. shotgun
Men’s Saturday Team Play
The Saturday squad opened their season with a split against rival
Silver Lakes. They won the home match 34-14 but dropped the
away game 33-15 the following week. They then traveled to Muroc
Lake on Saturday, January 31 for a home and home. Results of that
match were not available at press time.
Next Home Match: Saturday, February 7 vs. Muroc Lake – 10:00
a.m.
Llano “Winter” Open
March 7
This event is an individual gross and net competition and will be
flighted for men and women. Entry fee is $10 per person and will be
an Open “T”. You may make up your own foursomes or the Golf
Shop will set you up with a group. Complete details of this event
are posted in the Golf Shop.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
February brings us the start of the High School Golf season.
Palmdale, Pete Knight and Littlerock High Schools will again practice
and play their matches at Crystalaire. All three Coaches are currently
preparing their respective teams for the upcoming season with the
utmost priority on etiquette and adhering to the Crystalaire Rules and
Regulations. Practices and matches have been scheduled to not impact
regular play. Your support and patience is most appreciated as these
young hopefuls begin their golfing careers. A complete schedule of all
matches will be announced in the March Newsletter.
