The Roadrunner A Biweekly Newsletter of Blue Skies West January 29, 2015 NEWS FROM THE STAFF BLUE SKIES HOSPICE ACHIEVES JOINT COMMISSION STAFF ACCREDITATION By: CEO/President, [email protected] I’m proud to announce our Hospice has earned a Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (formerly referred to as JCAHO). Last year we made the decision to seek out this particular accreditation because of its rigor and prestige – it is an internationally recognized symbol of quality. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization which accredits and certifies more than 20,500 healthcare organizations in the United States. “It was a rigorous review of our processes and procedures, and our team was ready,” said Katie Boggs, our BST Hospice Administrator. The Mission of the Joint Commission is “To continuously improve health care for the public…to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.” Please join me in congratulating the Hospice Team for their dedicated efforts in preparing for and achieving accreditation, but even more so, we thank the team and our resident Volunteers for the gracious and caring work they do every day to benefit our Blue Skies residents and their families. The modern pieces by Jeffrey Mumford and Benjamin Britten were not the usual harmonies most of us were used to hearing. Ms. Lamprea is a brilliant technician and put her whole self into the performance of these pieces. She will have the honor of premiering a new piece by Jeffrey Mumford with the San Antonio Symphony in 2016. Ms Lamprea outlined what we would be hearing and did a mini-lecture on her program to help us appreciate what she would play. This concert was a wonderful beginning for our 2015 season. Our next concert will be Sunday, Feb 22, at 3pm. We are again privileged to be the Outreach concert for the returning Medalist from the San Antonio International Piano Competition, Yehjin Noh. Has anything as great as this ever been seen or heard before? Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire – as you did – and survived? Has any other god dared to take a nation for himself out of another nation by means of trials, miraculous signs, wonders, war, a strong hand, a powerful arm, and terrifying acts? Yet that is what the Lord your God did for you in Egypt, right before your eyes.” Deuteronomy 4:32-34, the Holy Bible. This was God’s message to Israel 3,422 years ago. He rescued his people from another nation. This is an example of God desiring to rescue people from sin and an eternity without him. He’s able to do it, if people will choose to trust him. ROADRUNNER GOLF By: Katherine Rajczi Monday – Thursday, This is the first golf report I have received since December. The weather has been difficult enough that no one, or sometimes only one or two played. So you can see, good weather brings a big turn-out. Monday, Jan 19, Individual - First place went to Ginny Hallager and Gene Kircus both shooting net 64. Third place went to Al Buie with a 66 and fourth with a 67 was Tom Young. Fifth place went to John Revak and Bill Miller both shooting 70. Sixth went to Tom Craig with a 73. Other competitors included John Brooks, John Rehm, Jim Kniker and Bill O’Hara. With the nice scores, went some special events that I need to mention. Jim Kniker got a birdie 2 on hole #8. Al Buie got a birdie 2 on hole #3 and a birdie 3 on hole #7. Bill Miller also birdied #7. Ginny Hallager had a chipin on #2 and a chip-in birdie 2 on hole #12. John Revak got birdie 3s on holes #2 and #5. Lastly, Tom Craig also got a birdie, we just don’t know the hole. As you can clearly see, nothing was lost in the time away from the game. Tuesday, Jan 20, Points - Bill Miller, Fred Seymour, and Al Buie took front, back, and total scoring 9.5, 6.5, 16. The other team did not have a chance with Bill Miller 17 Deadline: Friday, Feb 6 @ 4:[email protected] shooting 77gross (60 net). The second team was Tom Curtis, Jim Kniker, and Bob Shipman. Thursday, Jan 22, No golf due to rain The Roadrunner Golf Group would like to encourage any other golfers out there to join us. This fast-growing sport for seniors provides a fun way of getting aerobic exercise on a small court (about one half of a tennis court). Gender or strength is no advantage in this sport. We have the required racquets, balls, etc., so come out, and we’ll show you how easy it is to play. For further information, contact Ralph Comer, 451-5969; Helen Vanderneck, 677-0252; Don or Debbie Christian, 3340959; or Tom Carter, 860-5873. 18 Deadline: Friday, Feb 6 @ 4:[email protected] WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By: Martha Wesson The Wright Pat Mah Jongg group had a fascinating experience recently as they went on a pleasure cruise through the seas of their Green and Blue books, laughing all the way, of course. Fran provided this rowdy bunch with help from all of her Angels and Heavenly Twins as they dodged their way past Debbie’s Dragon Gates and Annie and Katherine’s Dragon Line Up. Although they soon found themselves surrounded by the Idiots, Hop Scotches, Scotch Hoppers, Snowflakes and Valentines that Martha, Sande, Carol and Katherine kept attracting, they got lucky and were caught up in the storm of Annie’s Windy Pairs which was able to lead them through her Grand Sequence to arrive at a relaxing harbor filled with Martha, Katherine and Debbie’s Bouquets, as well as Lynn and Fran’s 7 Up, and Dot and Carol’s Heavenly and Honorable Hash, using the Doublets donated by everyone as currency, of course. After this respite, they Razzled and Dazzled past the Mish Mash which was following Sande and Dot to the lovely isle of Piano Keys that was enjoyed by all before returning (with the aid of Katherine’s Trade Winds and Debbie’s Honorettes) to the end of the 102 possible port calls along the way. It’s great to be back now in CC3 on Tuesdays at 1pm to try out all we learned along the way. Come join us and see what fun Mah Jongg can be! MAH JONGG By: Gayl Ganskow If you are familiar with the card game Gin Rummy, you have a head start to understanding “Mah Jongg" (MJ). There are no playing cards here because in MJ you mix, pick, discard and arrange your tiles in combinations for a winning hand. The ideal game is played with four players; however, two or three players can play and have a great time as well. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up. Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B & A Days - 2nd Wed of each month in Card Room 112 , the Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor. Fridays from 1-3:30pm in CC3 and on Saturdays from 13:30pm in CC2. BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS By: Robert Yanke 9-Ball, Tuesday Jan 13: We have a record attendance, 15 players for the first time and we played 8 teams of partners. First game was won by Big John/Tommygun with a combo and Irish Pat/Knife won the second game with a three ball run. Tricky Dick/Lite won with a setup combo and Wild Bill/Ski won with a two ball combo. Irish Pat/Knife continued their run with a nice bank but then lost to Tricky/Lite who advanced to the finals. Lower level Swede/Pro won three in a row but lost on a setup to Irish Pat/Knife who went on to beat the unbeaten Tricky Dick/Miller Lite two quick games to win the tournament. Congratulations Irish/Knife. 19 Deadline: Friday, Feb 6 @ 4:[email protected] 8-Ball, Saturday, Jan 17: Good attendance, 14 players! First game, Handy Andy/Tomcat beat Big John/Wild Bill and Miller Lite/Crazy Larry beat Pro/T-man (Setup). Swede/Knife won a lag with Ski/Killer. Dandy Don/Tommygun beat Handy/Tomcat with a good bank. Dandy/ Tommygun won their second game to enter finals undefeated. In the lower level, Pro/T-man won four quick games to meet the undefeated pair. First game Pro/T-man made a small run to win, but then setup Dandy Don/Tommygun for the final win. Congratulations Dandy Don/Tommygun. There were great shots made by several players, but we aren’t given enough space to list. 9-Ball, Tuesday, Jan 20: Twelve players showed up to play with one arriving five minutes late; nonetheless, Pro allowed him to play. However, in the future the only way for a late player to join is if there is an odd number with someone needing a partner. Also, we will not play singles with any number over 10 players. This tournament was a series of boring shots, and the only high light was T-man going all the way undefeated for the championship. After Miller Lite lost his first game, he won five games before losing the last one to T-man for the championship. Congratulations T-man you were a bright light in a field of boredom. 8-Ball, Saturday, Jan 24: Good showing today with nine players. Pro won the first game with a small run and Tommygun won the second game with a small run. Miller Lite was set-up by Chicago Killer who made a three ball run to win. Miller Lite beat Tommy and Pro beat Killer. Then Pro beat Miller Lite to advance undefeated. Lower level no one seemed to want to win as we had three lags and an eight ball too soon. Miller Lite beat Tommy with some good shots and then met the Pro who was ready for him and made a four ball run to win the championship. Come practice more! 20 Deadline: Friday, Feb 6 @ 4:[email protected] Pendant Information Each resident is assigned one pendant. Your pendant is programmed with your name and apartment number. You may utilize this pendant on either Blue Skies of Texas campus. If you or someone near you needs assistance - press the pad on the front of the pendant. You’ll need to depress it for just a moment. Once you see the red light flash just above the pad - you know it’s transmitting. It takes a moment to come through our computer, and then we’ll send a First Responder to your location. These employees are trained in First Aide, CPR and the use of the AED. When the Front Desk is notified of an activated pendant we actually receive notification of the three closest repeater locations. So, if you are away from your apartment and push your pendant, it will tell us where you’re located (i.e. golf range, walking trail, etc.). We have identified numerous areas, very specifically, so we are able to easily find your location. Our Response Procedure: We receive your alarm - we call your apartment or respond to the area the system identifies. The Front Desk calls Metro ambulance. If you accidently set off your pendant we can come and reset it, you can reset it yourself or we can reset it remotely from the Front Desk. First Responders will not assist in helping residents get up. We defer to the experts to handle this. Pendants work on both campuses. If you’re at BST East and have an emergency, you can push your pendant and it’ll notify BST East Front Desk of your location. BST East residents who visit BST West may do the same, and if they push their pendant, it’ll notify BST West Front Desk. Your pendant is “Water Resistant.” This means you can take it in the shower with you, and water can run over the pendant, but you cannot submerge it in water. REMEMBER: If you know you’re having an emergency – call Metro Ambulance at 945-2022 or call 911. You may use your pendant or call the Front Desk also, but by calling Metro or 911 you’re not losing precious moments that may save your life. If you do make a call to Metro or 911 directly, if possible, please notify the Front Desk. We will then be able to expedite the ambulance to your exact location. Smoke Detector Your Smoke Detector is also tied to our alarm system at the Front Desk. When we receive an alarm notifying us your smoke detector has been activated, we will call your apartment to verify an emergency exists. If there is a fire-follow emergency procedures’ and exit your apartment (if safe to do so). Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station. The Front Desk will call 911 for you. 21 Deadline: Friday, Feb 6 @ 4:[email protected]
