PSAT/NMSQT Test - Wednesday, October 15, 2014
To All Class of 2016 Students ONLY
Dear Parents/Guardians:
The PSAT/NMSQT provides students with the opportunity to practice for the SAT, enter the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions for recognition and scholarships. Sophomores are not
eligible for scholarship consideration until their junior year. This test measures skills in critical
reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing. It is two hours and ten minutes in length and has a
scoring scale from 20-80. The critical reading includes 48 questions in total with sentence completion
and passage-based reading. The math has 38 questions with multiple-choice and student-produced
response questions. There is one 30 minute writing section with 39 questions including identifying
sentence error, improving sentences and paragraphs. All writing skills are multiple choice.
The test begins promptly at 8am on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, and students should report directly
to their assigned PSAT rooms. Room assignments will be listed at the school. The exam will end at
approximately 11am, before 5th period. Please be advised that students will be required to return to
class and follow the rest of their daily schedule after the exam. If you have children in the class of
2015, 2017, and/or 2018, please note that October 15th will be a regular Wednesday schedule and
students are required to report to their classes as usual.
The PSAT/NMSQT does not require studying for specific subject related material as it test skills that
the student have developed throughout their years in school. We encourage all juniors to take the test
as it gives the parent/guardian and student valuable feedback on their strengths and weaknesses in the
three testing areas. It also gives the student specific suggestions on how to improve skills, compare
academic skills with those of other college-bound students, request colleges send information and
obtain information about college majors and careers.
Lastly, the College Board does not permit makeup testing; as a result, there will not be a makeup day
for students who are absent on October 15th.

TIPS FOR STUDENTS TAKING THE PSAT TEST
Advance planning
It's important to be organized and well rested on test day.

Organize ID, pencils, calculators, and other supplies
Get a good night's sleep
Eat breakfast
Double-check for everything you need before leaving home
Arrive to school on time
What to bring to the test center
Students should group together everything they must bring for the test beforehand. They must bring:

Two No. 2 pencils and a good eraser; no pens or mechanical pencils
Acceptable calculator with fresh batteries; students are not required to clear the memory on
their calculators.
It's also a good idea to bring:

Estimados Padres/Tutores:
El PSAT/NMSQT les proporciona a los estudiantes la oportunidad para practicar para el examen SAT,
entrar a las competencias de National Merit Scholarship Corporation para reconocimiento, y becas.
Estudiantes del segundo año no son elegibles para consideración de becas hasta su tercer año. Este
examen mide sus habilidades en lectura crítica, razonamiento en la matemática, y escritura. Tomará
dos horas y diez minutos y se calificará del 20-80. La lectura crítica tiene 48 preguntas en total con e
incluye completar oraciones y lecturas. La matemática tiene 38 preguntas de opción múltiple y
preguntas donde las respuestas serán producidas por el estudiante. Habrá una sección de escritura con
39 preguntas incluyendo identificar errores en oraciones, mejorar oraciones, y párrafos. Toda la
escritura será opción múltiple.
El examen comienza a las 8am en punto el miércoles, 15 de octubre del 2014 y estudiantes deben
reportarse directamente a su clase asignada para el PSAT. Las clases asignadas estarán disponibles en
la escuela. El examen terminará a aproximadamente las 11am, antes del 5to periodo. Tome note que
los estudiantes tendrán que regresar a sus clases y seguir su programa por el resto del día. Si tiene hijos
en las clases del 2015, 2017, y/o 2018, tome note que el 15 de octubre será un horario de miércoles
normal y los estudiantes tendrán que reportarse a sus clases como siempre.
No es necesario estudiar materia específica para el PSAT/NMSQT porque examina habilidades que el
estudiante ha desarrollado por todos sus años en la escuela. Les animamos a todos los estudiantes que
tomen el examen porque le proporciona a los padres/tutores y a los estudiantes información importante
sobre las fortalezas y debilidades en las tres áreas del examen. También les da sugerencias específicas
a los estudiantes para mejorar sus habilidades, comparar sus habilidades académicas con los de otros
estudiantes entrando a la universidad, pedirle a las universidades información sobre áreas de
instrucción y carreras.
También el College Board no permite tomar el examen si falta; por lo tanto, los estudiantes que están
ausente el 15 de octubre no podrán tomar el examen otro día.

CONSEJOS PARA ESTUDIANTES TOMANDO EL PSAT
Planea por adelantado
Es importante ser organizado y que hayan descansado antes del examen.
