To You From the Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
A good friend emailed me a copy of these ten most wonderful thoughts. Unfortunately,
the email does not include the name of the author. We can know from the style of the
writing that the author is a contemporary writer who uses wit and humor to communicate
deep thoughts. Whoever this author is, we can tell that he or she is someone who clearly
possesses true wisdom and deep spiritual insights needed for our time. We can thank
this author for the following most insightful thoughts as we begin the new year.
1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering
wheel" that directs the right path throughout.
2. Why is a car's WINDSHIELD so large & the Rear view Mirror so small? Because our
PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, Look Ahead and Move on.
3. Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes a few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.
4. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If
going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either.
5. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget
the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold!
6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says,
"Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end!
7. When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't
solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.
8. A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye
sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision!"
9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes,
when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.
10. WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes away today's PEACE.
What wonderful points to ponder as we begin the year 2015! May we all be blessed by
these insights this year and all the years to come.
Sincerely Yours In Christ,
Fr. Burt Absalon,
Pastor

“For it is in
giving that
we receive.”
St. Francis of Assisi
Our parish tithe occasionally supports the
Fellowship of Catholic University Students
(FOCUS). This week, parishioner Michael
Kremske describes the impact this ministry had on him:
My parents were often concerned about my health
growing up because I would regularly come down
with a mysterious illness once a week that would
keep me from leaving my bed. However, the case of
the strange illness did not last for very long. My parents managed to crack the case when they realized
I was consistently sick on Sunday mornings at 9:30
(right before Sunday mass). In my family I was
known as the “Heathen Child” because of such antics.
Needless to say, my faith was never the center of
my life while growing up. It was not until later in life,
during college, that I realized I was missing the
most crucial piece of the Christian faith: a personal,
authentic relationship with Christ. I cannot say that
there was truly one specific moment that immediately brought me into a relationship with Him; instead, it came as a result of frequenting the sacraments, continually returning to the Lord in prayer,
and asking questions about the faith. Perhaps the
greatest effort put forth in gaining a relationship
with Christ was in choosing to seek Him out both in
times of consolation and desolation.
My relationship with Christ began when a FOCUS
missionary invested in me during my freshman year
of college. We shared life together as brothers in
Christ and he modeled an authentic Christian lifestyle that I did not realize Catholics were actually
living out. He helped me to see the beauty in the
Church and how it is truly centered on Christ in the
Eucharist. I found reason, beauty, and fulfillment in
my faith, which had been terribly foreign to me in
the Catholic Church throughout my life. This newfound beauty continues to keep me digging deeper
and seeking out the great truths that the Catholic
Church teaches, which ultimately helps me to grow
deeper in my relationship with Christ daily.
A special shout out to the St. Mary Youth Group! All
of you inspiring young faithful are in my prayers!
Also I thank Fr. Burt and my FOCUS supporters that
make this mission possible. Thank you, St. Mary!
Mike is currently a senior and a FOCUS intern at Drake
University in DesMoines. If you have a story you’d like to
share, please email it to [email protected]. We can print your story anonymously if
you want.

first meeting for the Living
Stations of the Cross will be
Sunday, February 1, 2015,

Cross. We need students to help with this production as
actors and crew.

Small group studies are not only a great way
to grow in your faith, but they allow you to get
to know other parishioners and feel a sense
of belonging in our parish. If you have never
tried a small group study, check out these
two opportunities. Catholicism is a 10 week
study presented by Fr. Robert Barron. This study will begin the first week in February. Fr. Barron created this
groundbreaking study as a thematic presentation of
what Catholics believe and why, so all adults can come
to a deeper understanding of the Catholic Faith. Not a
video lecture, Church history, or scripture study, this engaging and interesting formational program uses the art,
music, architecture, literature and all the treasures of
the Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of the Church. Consoling the Heart of Jesus presented by Fr. Michael Gaitley explores the topic of Divine
Mercy. This study will start the week of January 19 and conclude the week before Divine
Mercy Sunday. We have evening and daytime
groups for both studies. Please contact
Joanne for days and times these groups will
be offered and to reserve your copy of the
study guide recommended for these studies.
Each study guide is $25, but please don’t let the cost
keep you from signing up. [email protected] or

In today’s second reading St. Paul talks
about the fact that married couples have to
deal with the anxieties of the world. Sometimes those stresses can really have a negative impact on our marriages. Get away from
all those worldly anxieties and take time to just focus on
God and each other by making a Worldwide Marriage
Encounter Weekend. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are February 6-8 in Crystal Lake, IL;
March 6-8 in Madison, WI or April 17-19 in Brookfield,
WI. Early registration is highly recommended. For more
