Announcements Sunday February 1 2015

■ PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1 February 2015
Altar Flowers
The altar flowers are given to the glory of God and in loving
memory of her parents, Lorna & Raymond Mais, by Angela
Beckman.
Welcome, the Rev’d Cricket Park!
This morning, it is with great joy that we welcome the Rev’d
Cricket Park, Redeemer’s new Rector, who will celebrate the Holy
Eucharist and preach at both liturgies. The 10:30 Eucharist will be
followed by a festive Coffee Hour in the Parish Hall. At Coffee
Hour, we ask all parishioners and visitors to consider wearing a
name tag, as this will be most helpful to Cricket. Names tags may
be found on the closet door in the Parish Hall. If, for some reason,
you do not have a name tag or your nametag is missing, blank
nametags are available on the table in the Parish Hall.
Adult Forum
Sunday, 9:15 a.m.
This morning, guest speakers Saleem Zaru, Executive Director of
the United Palestinian Appeal, and Kirk Campbell, founder of the
running group Iqraa (Arabic for “read”) will lead a discussion about
their organizations’ service to the Palestinian people.
Stewardship and Budget Update
The total amount pledged for 2015 is still significantly short of the
amount needed in order to achieve a balanced budget. To date, 121
households have pledged a total of $459,453. The current draft
budget requires pledge income of approximately $541,000. We
extend sincere thanks to those who have already pledged. If you
have not yet pledged, we ask that you prayerfully consider doing so
as soon as possible. Pledge cards are available in the Parish Hall.
You may also email your pledge to the Parish Office.
Foyer Dinner Groups: Please sign-up
If you would like to participate in the next round of Foyer Dinners,
which provide an excellent opportunity to meet and strengthen

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper & Talent Show: Please sign-up

As is our custom, the parish community will gather on Shrove
Tuesday (also known as Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday) for a delicious
feast of pancakes and sausage. The requested contribution is $10/
adults; $5/children. If you plan to attend, add your name to the
sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall. Then it’s on with the show! Talent
in all forms is welcome as long as it lasts no more than five
minutes. To reserve a space in the line-up, add your name to the
sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall or contact parishioner Chrissy de
Fontenay: [email protected].
Ash Wednesday Liturgies
Wednesday, February 18
On Ash Wednesday, the Holy Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes
will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. The 7:30
p.m. liturgy will include hymns, service music, and choral anthems
sung by a schola. We hope you will worship with us.
Taizé Service & Healing Rite
Monday, February 2, 7:30 p.m.
Join us for the next Taizé Service, an informal, contemplative
liturgy with icons, candles, incense, scripture, silence, and chant
accompanied by piano, guitars, and other instruments. The Healing
Rite — prayers for healing of body, mind, or spirit for you or
someone you love — is offered at the conclusion of the service.
Choral Evensong for the First Sunday in Lent
Sunday, February 22, 5:00 p.m.
Join us as we mark the beginning of the holy season of Lent with a
service of Choral Evensong, one of the great jewels of the Anglican
liturgical tradition. Music will include works by Gary Davison and
Herbert Howells, sung by the Adult and Youth Choirs under the
direction of guest conductor Gary Davison. A brief recital by
organist Victoria Shields will precede the liturgy. All proceeds from
the offering will benefit Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD).
A reception will follow. All are welcome.
An Evening at the Movies with Jonathan Ortloff, organ
Sunday, February 8, 5:00 p.m.
The 2014-15 season of the Music at Redeemer Series will continue
with an old-fashioned evening at the movies, featuring two silent
films accompanied by internationally acclaimed theater organist
Jonathan Ortloff. The first film will be Big Business, a child-friendly
Laurel & Hardy short. The feature film will be the 1925 version of
The Phantom of the Opera. Child care will be available throughout
the evening. A reception will follow. Free-will offering. Please invite
your family, friends, and neighbors to this exceptionally unique
musical event. Word of mouth is still the best form of publicity!
Lenten Quiet Morning: Renewing our Practice of Prayer
Saturday, February 28, 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Lent is an excellent time to consider renewing your prayer practices
or developing new ones. Dr. Kathleen Henderson Staudt, teacher
and spiritual director, will lead a Lenten Quiet Morning entitled
Renewing our Practices of Prayer. The morning will include discussion,
meditation, a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, and a pot-luck
lunch. The requested contribution is $15 per participant. If you
would like to attend, add your name to the sign-up sheet in the
Parish Hall. Questions? Contact parishioner Mary lin Raisch:
[email protected] or 301-762-2790.

Episcopal Church, Washington, DC, will gather again at St.
Stephen’s on February 6 to discuss Enrique’s Journey, by Sonia
Nazario. All are welcome — even if you were not able to attend the
first two sessions and even if you have not read the book.
