Elder High School February 2015 Newsletter 513-921-3744 http://www.elderhs.org Dear Parents, Recently I attended a Girl Scout square dance with my granddaughters. For me it was a tradition which began when their mother was in the first-grade some forty years ago. The dance is always a fantastic evening—beginning at Frisch’s and ending at Graeter’s. Every year my partner presents a personally made gift—perhaps it is a cardboard star proclaiming me “Sheriff” or a hand-painted neck tie. This January Maggie, my first-grade granddaughter, called out “Hey Pops!” from the back seat as they picked me up. She proudly handed me her gift—a key-chain. Crafted from the finest poster board, colored my favorite shade of purple, it was in the shape of “E.” This girl knows my weak spot. What a great way to begin the evening with her and her sisters. Pictures taken, we squared up and danced the night away—swinging our partners, dosey doe, allemande, promenade, and all of the other moves I have mastered over the decades. As I looked around the hall at the dads, granddads and girl scouts it occurred to me that the best gift was the few hours of time we spent together. My key-chain is safely stored with the star-badges and ties I received over the years from her mom, aunts and sisters—cardboard triggers for the great memories of those many dances. Enjoy your time with your sons. Thank you for allowing him to attend Elder, where we too get to spend precious time with him. Altiora! Tom Otten ‘64 February 2015 WALK FREE DAY There will be no classes on Monday, February 2, thanks to the fundraising efforts of our students during the Walk for Others.
