Till today, I still remember very vividly my first Sunday there. I was a bit apprehensive about going to a new church – what will people think of theological students, will they throw me difficult questions, will they avoid me? Whatever my fears were, they went away soon after I stepped in. When I stepped in, a young adult greeted me at the door and welcomed me with a huge smile and a sincere handshake. After that, she showed me a place where I could sit and sat with me throughout the service. At the end of the service, she brought me down to the refreshment area. Along the way, she showed me where the washrooms were and asked if I needed to take a toilet break. She then waited till I came out and introduced me to her other church friends. As I began shaking hands with the other church members and trying to remember each of their names, my new friend went to bring some refreshments for me and I continue chatting with her other church friends. I spent the rest of the time getting to know the people there and they too showed their interest in knowing me. As I made my way home after service, I was thinking about my entire experience that morning. I felt welcomed and loved by fellow Christians who made me feel right at home. And I thought to myself, “If only every church can be so loving and welcoming …” The experience I had that morning helped me realize how important it is to have the right attitude towards church. Ephesians 5:25-27 and 1 Corinthians 3:10-17 shows us God’s attitude towards His church. Here are some points in summary: • In Christ, God loved the church and gave himself up for her—to wash and sanctify her. • God’s purpose for the church is that she be splendid, holy, blameless, pure. • God dwells in the church by his Spirit, and so it is his temple (not the church building but the congregation!). • The church is therefore holy and precious to God—which means we must be very careful how we ‘build’. To damage, let alone destroy, God’s church is a terrible crime.1 Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 25 What then is our attitude towards church each Sunday when we make our way there? Tony Payne of Matthias Media writes this in his introduction to his resource, Six Steps to Loving Your Church: “It is very common for Christians to regard church as a passive, personal or receptive experience— as being about ‘what I get out of it’. ____________________________ 1 Six Steps to Loving Your Church 4 At its best, this attitude tends to focus on the quality of the personal worship experience I am having and the personal lessons and encouragement I am receiving. At its worst, it leads Christians to evaluate church on the basis of whether they find it entertaining, enjoyable or beneficial; to have minimal interaction or participation while they are there; and even to ‘shop around’ for the church that delivers them the best experience. However, church by its very nature is not a personal experience. It’s a corporate one. And according to the New Testament, the key attitude we should bring with us to church is love: that consistent desire and determination to build up (or ‘edify’) others and seek their welfare. On the basis of love, we should come to church more ready to serve and build than to be entertained or inspired. 1 Corinthians 3:10-17 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames. 16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. Six Steps to Loving Your Church is a simple six-step training program that helps participants change their whole mindset about church—to learn that ‘loving’ your church doesn’t just mean enjoying it or liking it, but loving the people who are the church by ministering to them in whatever way you can. It aims to transform congregation members from passive recipients or spectators to active other-person-centered servants in our Sunday gatherings; it aims to transform your church culture from ‘the ministry of the few’ to ‘the ministry of the pew’.” Over the next few months, Living Praise will embark on an important and exciting journey and that is learning to love our church. This is part of our next phase of reaching out to people within our church and the community around us. Beginning this afternoon, we will take the first step in the series Six Steps to Loving Your Church. Join us for an hour of learning through – watching videos in the resource, sharing, discussion, and prayer in small groups on how to love (or better love) our church. This might be a good opportunity for you to get to know other people in our church as well. After the session, what better way to put into practice what we learned as we continue to fellowship with one another through our first LPPC Monthly Games Day. This extended time is to encourage our members and friends to stay behind for an extended time of fellowship. For those who love sports, we have Futsal and Captain’s Ball. For those who prefer a quieter afternoon, we have board games to occupy your mind. For those who just want to chill, simply pull up a chair and have a cup of coffee or tea with a friend or two. May this first step help us to better love LPPC. 5 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS ! Pray that our youths and young adults continue to prepare and come punctually for their bible study every Sunday. As they go through the Two Ways to Live series, pray that they take time to think about friends and loved ones whom have yet to hear the gospel and pray for their hearts to be opened. Pray for wisdom in understanding the gospel message in their own hearts and knowing it so that they know why they need to share the gospel. 1 FEBRUARY 2015 YAYAM Youth & Young Adults Ministries We praise God for the safe return of some of our young adults from their overseas internships. We commit those leaving and returning to their studies or overseas internships - Joni, Tobi, Odelia, Chang Zhong, Josiah, into His loving care. May Christ continue to watch over them wherever they are. Pray for our young adults currently serving NS that they continue to persevere on in their faith in tough times and that they may continue to find time to read His Word each day. Pray for those working or in Uni, that they may granted wisdom to prioritise their time and to use time wisely in their busy schedule. 1 Feb 2015 LPPC Monthly Games Day Join us this afternoon as we kick off (literally) our monthly LPPC Games Day! It will be an afternoon of learning together as a LPPC family on how and what it means to love God’s church and His people. Then it’s time to exercise our brains and muscles (if any) as we continue with board games and sports Captain’s Ball, Futsal and Badminton! 2.15pm to 3.15pm - 6 Steps to Loving Your Church* 3.15pm to 5.30pm - Board Games and Sports *6 Steps to Loving Your Church “Some of us really love our churches, some of us aren’t so positive, and for many of us that feeling can change from week to week. This six-session programme is about how to love your church whether you’re feeling enthusiastic about it or not. It’s about the mindset we take with us as we go to church each week, and how that mindset is expressed in a multitude of ways, big and small. In particular, it’s about the part that we all play as God’s people in loving, serving and building each other up, Sunday by Sunday. We all have a ministry - the ministry of the pew.” Colin Marshall and Tony Payne 6 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Praying for Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School PRAY Date: !Monday 2 February Venue: Fellowship Hall Time: !7.30-8.15am For more details please contact Pastor Yuk Yee A New Members’ class will be conducted for those who would like to be baptised, confirmed or transfer their membership to Living Praise from 9.30am to 11am on the following dates: Mar 15,22; Apr 12, 19; May 3,10 & 24 This class helps one to understand what membership in God’s kingdom means in LPPC, what we believe, how we live our Christian lives and what Presbyterianism is about.
