Annual Recognition Luncheon and AGM
Among those in attendance at the November
15 luncheon were Councillor K. Egli and Lucy
Gierer. Volunteer of the Year was the late
Franz Gierer. Councillor Egli announced that
the application to name the community
centre’s kitchen (owned by the city) in Franz’s
memory would soon be going out for public
comment. Once comments were received and
approval given, a commemorative celebration
will be held at the Centre, possibly during
Family Day February 16. Recipients of the
judged Lawn & Garden, Home for the
December Holiday & Halloween Decoration
Contests received certificates. 2013 individual
home pictures will be proudly on display
throughout the Centre during the next year.
Thanks to Pauline Budd for overseeing their
mounting. Some more recent ones, taken by
photographer Liz Bradley, are posted to thca.ca
website’s carousel photo gallery.
Regarding the affairs of the Association, you
may recall that one of its responsibilities is the
operation of our Community Centre.
Consolidated Revenues for the year ending
September 30 was $44,665 of which
approximately 73% was generated via rental of
the facility, 9% from City’s grant to operate
the rink, 8% from Activities, 6% from
Donations and 3% from Membership.
Combined Expenses were $36,204, of which
45% was allocated to the city for their portion
of Rentals of the Facility, 31% was Personnel,
8% was Communications, 6% was Program &
Events, 6% was Minor Capital Acquisitions
and 4% was Administration. Pauline BuddKenny
diligently
oversaw
property
management and scheduling of the Center.
Niki Mintenko and Yushra Khodabocus
ardently oversaw indoor and outdoor activities
& events, Allen Deering ably oversaw facility
promotion, while Annet de Boer skilfully
oversaw Membership.
Bookkeeping was
capably done by Jingjing Fu with keen
oversight of Maria Baker, our treasurer. All
were thanked.

Our Association’s top priorities had been
achieving improvements to Medhurst and
Tanglewood Parks.
These have been
accomplished. Hats off to Danilo Orazco who
oversaw the installation of the volleyball
court, outdoor notice board, games table, and
the care of the two flower planters. He did so
with the assistance of NROCRC and
Councillor Egli, and while also providing
leadership to Neighbourhood Watch. With
the assistance of Councillor Egli and under
the observant eye of Pauline Budd, a games
table was installed near the basketball and ball
hockey courts of Tanglewood Park, and a
fence and benches were installed between
these courts.
These improvements
complement the community winter rink
which last year operated from December 23 to
March 16 under the experienced supervision
of Matt Budd-Kenny. Matt and crew join us
again this season. A successful application
was made for additional funding to provide an
enhanced Carnival on Family Day, February
16. Hardstones Grill has offered to assist with
Family Day as they did with the Cornroast,
Tim Hortons will provide coffee & hot
chocolate as they did on the Corn Roast, as
well as this past summer t-shirts and medals
for soccer. Hobby Centre will supply event
prizes and Crossroads Canadian Tire will
again provide a bucket of pucks. Please
support our sponsors and other local
businesses.
A third Association priority has been
increasing awareness of the programs and
events offered at the Centre. Appreciation
was extended to Margaret Stenfert, Staying
Connected editor. Inserted in our newsletter
SC is programming Highlights. Prepared by
Allen, it will now be published three times a
year.
It shows programs run by other
organizations such as NROCRC, by the City’s
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and
by ourselves.
Katherine Occhuito of
NROCRC, City staff Kristy Hardiman and
Dinos Dafniotis were thanked for their
contribution to the programs at our Centre.
Pamela Belfer was thanked for monitoring
voice-mail about the Center activities.
.
Keeping you up-to-date of the News of our
Neighbourhood has also been the goal of the
website: thca.ca. In the spring the Association
transitioned from David Lyon to Thomas
Bradley as webmaster. David’s long standing
contribution
to
our
community
was
acknowledged as being stellar. Thomas, Allen,
Pauline, Alysha Akoodie, who is the Board
secretary, have been working on a refurbished
website. It will come on stream early in the
New Year. You will continue to be able to
subscribe to our blog and be linked to Ottawa
Rinks. Our Activity Calendar and On-line
Registration for Activities will remain valued
pages. Our Room Availability Calendar and
Rental Reservation Form will also remain.
Volunteer Coordinator Wendy Farant, who
oversaw the distribution of the Fridge Magnets
with our last issue of SC, was thanked for
rejoining the board.
She works with
distributors P. Bloskie, A. De Boer, S. de Boer,
J. Heney, N. Mintenko, I. Inyang, B. Martin,
G. Roderick, V. Siciliano and J. Ward to put
out the news. SC is now regularly distributed
to the Medhurst Apartment building. SC is
also archived on the website.
At the Annual General Meeting portion of
Recognition Day elected were Graeme
Roderick, president, Allen Deering, vice
president, Maria Baker, treasurer and Alysha
Akoodie, secretary.
Directors at large are Ted Baker, Annet de
Boer, Wendy Farant, Danilo Orazco and Rose
Garces . Regarding the Centre’s Committee of
Management, the Board recently confirmed
Jingjng, Pam and Graeme in the positions of
bookkeeper, secretary and chair. Pauline [facility
manager] Niki and Yushra [Activity Managers]
and Allen [facility promoter] remain in their
positions. The scheduler and facilitator of Centre
volunteers are vacant positions and are being
advertised in this Issue. If you are interested in
helping out or you want further details, contact
Graeme at 613-226-7081. The efforts of all those
who contribute to making this a better
neighbourhood are appreciated.

Annual Recognition Luncheon and AGM
Among those in attendance at the November
15 luncheon were Councillor K. Egli and Lucy
Gierer. Volunteer of the Year was the late
Franz Gierer. Councillor Egli announced that
the application to name the community
centre’s kitchen (owned by the city) in Franz’s
memory would soon be going out for public
comment. Once comments were received and
approval given, a commemorative celebration
will be held at the Centre, possibly during
Family Day February 16. Recipients of the
judged Lawn & Garden, Home for the
December Holiday & Halloween Decoration
Contests received certificates. 2013 individual
home pictures will be proudly on display
throughout the Centre during the next year.
Thanks to Pauline Budd for overseeing their
mounting. Some more recent ones, taken by
photographer Liz Bradley, are posted to thca.ca

45% was allocated to the city for their portion
of Rentals of the Facility, 31% was Personnel,
8% was Communications, 6% was Program &
Events, 6% was Minor Capital Acquisitions
and 4% was Administration. Pauline BuddKenny
diligently
oversaw
property
management and scheduling of the Center.
Niki Mintenko and Yushra Khodabocus
ardently oversaw indoor and outdoor activities
& events, Allen Deering ably oversaw facility
promotion, while Annet de Boer skilfully
oversaw Membership.
