Morning Book Club Continues
Sign up to receive NML’s monthly
events calendar by email at the
library’s circulation desk.
NML’s ongoing book discussion
group meets monthly on Tuesday
mornings at 9:00 am. A morning
snack is provided and attendees
may bring their own coffee or tea.
The discussion lasts one hour and
is hosted by Beth Kane. Attendees
suggest and select titles to discuss.
Upcoming discussions:
February 17:
Under the Wide and Starry Sky
by Nancy Horan
The story chronicles the love
affair of Robert Louis Stevenson and
Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne. They
meet in rural France in 1875, where
Fanny takes refuge with her children
to escape her husband. Stevenson,
too, is escaping from his life, running
from family pressure to become a
lawyer.
March 17:
All the Light We Cannot See
by Anthony Doerr
In 1944, the U.S. Air Force
bombed the Nazi-occupied French
town of St. Malo. The story starts
just before the bombing, then goes
back to 1934 to describe two
childhoods. Werner is a German
orphan whose math skills earn him
a place in an elite Nazi training
school—saving him from a life in
the mines, but forcing him to
continually choose between
opportunity and morality. MarieLaure is blind and grows up in
Paris, where her father is a
locksmith for the Museum of
Natural History until the
fall of Paris forces them to
St. Malo.
